Suspected cause

I figure since we're already lacking some rigidity because of the roof missing any sort of additional bracing is probably an improvement so you might be right.

Suggestion

On mine the studs going into the 2 ends of the rod are threaded the opposite of each other so after backing off the lock nuts you simply turn the rod one way or the other to tighten/loosen any slack in the rod.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've read that front strut braces are a waste of money and they do not do anything. I was skeptical but I decided to try one. I put a Carbon fiber schnell brace on my 99 cab and it has made an improvement. There are no more jarring bumps through the steering when I'm driving over rough pavement. The suspension also seems "smoother" and is able to absorb the bumps better. Cowl shake is reduced too. For $125 is was worth it for me Brian

POST 2Original post

Interesting - I don't understand how tying the strut towers together could possibly make the suspension handle rough pavement better, but as long as you're happy with it, that's what matters. Any pics?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's hidden under the plastic that covers the battery. So you don't even see it

POST 5Original post

I didn't even think they made those for the water cooled Porsches. I know in the air cooled days these were popular mods. I figure since we're already lacking some rigidity because of the roof missing any sort of additional bracing is probably an improvement so you might be right.

POST 6Original post

Sounds great. May have to get one as well. Where did you get it from?

POST 8Original post

I just bought one from Vertex as well for my 99 cab via Ebay. thanks for starting the thread I'm a sucker for easy/cheap mods whether they work or not LOL. My front is riding a bit rougher since I put stiffer front coil overs / lowered it some and if it helps even a little on the track it will be worth it.

POST 9Original post

I've been wondering about this. Years ago, in my E46 cab, a strut tower brace made a huge difference for cowl shake. In fact, in the second year of production they made a production line change of adding a strut tower brace.

The 996 has its own factory strut brace stock so it won't be as dramatic as the BMW's. Currently have a BMW Motorsports unit in the wife's ride. I would venture to say the rear one would make more of a difference on the 996.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I can't speak for what a strut brace would do for a coupe but it has helped my cabriolet. Yes the 996 does have 2 metal bars that connect from the strut towers to the chassis, but i think a 3rd bar connecting the strut towers together, side-to-side helps out too. You can never have enough chassis stiffening in an open top car. As an FYI The carbon fiber bar I bought weighs 3 pounds

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I drove the car more extensively tonight and it's a pretty big difference. At least on my cabriolet. I'm very happy with it and it's well worth the money

POST 14Original post

So I just put one of these on my Cab. Have not really had enough time driving it to notice a change. Does anyone know how I'm to tension the schnell brace? There is a large nut on one end of the bar, do I just tighten that? It doesn't seem to want to tighten down anymore than it already is. I bought this from a rennlister without instructions. TIA

POST 15Original post

On mine the studs going into the 2 ends of the rod are threaded the opposite of each other so after backing off the lock nuts you simply turn the rod one way or the other to tighten/loosen any slack in the rod. Tighten the lock nuts once you have it where you want it and you're done. I also tightened the bolt at the pivots as well a little. You want the whole thing to be rigid.

POST 16Original post

Thanks, just ordered one off of eBay, did the make me an offer and got for $100.00 (Gold Anodized one) with shipping. Looking forward to see what diff. it will make.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Please let us know if you notice a difference. Thanks

POST 18Original post

I had a rear strut tower bar on my C4S and it did make a small (but noticeable) improvement in the stiffness of the chassis.

POST 19Original post

I was able to finally put the strut brace on this last weekend. It was a tight fit by the battery (not sure I have a stock battery). As you can see from the picture, but it did fit. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet as it has been rainy everyday since I installed it. Will post once I get chance to give it a good test drive.

POST 20Original post

Is this what you guys are looking for? http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40

POST 21Original post

I was able to get out and stretch the legs on the car this weekend and the brace definitely makes a difference. Handles the bumps better and it feels tighter. For a $100 you can't go wrong.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Glad I'm not the only one that felt a difference

POST 23Original post

My perception is larger bumps/impacts fro rougher roads transfer thru the whole front of the car versus one side. The difference is noticeable.

POST 24Original post

I found out on my mk2 cab there was already a lot of bracing in front of the firewall. But I decided the gold looks kinda cool - even with the plastic covers on you can see it peeking through the mesh
