I drive about an hour to where I do my oil changes (crazy I know but its where my shop and all my tools are, so I usually coordinate it with some other work I want to do).
Leading evidence: 'Replace (crazy i know' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (crazy i know' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Fry bacon or change engine oil without cloths on, at your own peril...

For my next 996 oil change Im going to drive it, use the LN hand pump to get UOA then extract cold and open drain for excess.

guess it was a compromise between having enough oil to lubricate in all conditions and not having to much so a spirited twisty run didn't puke out the aos....

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

How long did you let it drain? My 2000 C2 takes about the same amount to fill to the top line (on the dash gauge) when I let it drain for about 2-3 hours. I think it is a bit more than the car's manual calls for with an oil/filter change.
I was always told to drain cold as the dirt and other chunks of stuff have time to get to the oil pan. When draining warm the dirt is circulated in the motor and doesn't make it to the drain plug....unless you let drain for hours. Right or wrong who knows but thats what I've always done on all my cars.
Most shops don’t have the time or the space to hold a car overnight oil drains
but I asked my tech to do my car before lunch and I’ll buy lunch
almost 7.5 qts came out before we ate an hour and half later another 1.75 came out
I drive about an hour to where I do my oil changes (crazy I know but its where my shop and all my tools are, so I usually coordinate it with some other work I want to do). It never takes more than a 1/2 hr or so to drain the oil - at least 9.5 qts that is. Im sure theres still some out in the heads but not too much, and its only 6 mos. old with 3 or 4K miles on it no harm no foul
Anyone ever use an extractor? For my other cars lately, I extract cold, yes it takes a while, and then open the drain plug and typically none comes out. For my next 996 oil change Im going to drive it, use the LN hand pump to get UOA then extract cold and open drain for excess.
I open the drain plug, dance around the car three times, face the front of the car and bow down, then walk away. You know, to appease the Porsche gods...
A lot of voodoo goes into an oil change...
IMO, using an extractor pump from the top dipstick tube, not the best way. But of course it will work. In some Marine engine applications thats the only way.
The reason to get oil nice an hot, then let sit for a few moments, then drain from the bottom, is to let/keep all dirt/debris suspended in oil, then the faster it can drain out with authority all the better to carry out all contaminants...
I like to let mine sit over night on the lift draining all it can.
Well, actually iirr, left off the sump plate on my 996.2 for a month on the lift. Every morning would be a substantial puddle of oil in drain pan I'd remove. Even after a month when doing a bore scope,, oil would still be dripping down on me,,, after a month...!!!
Yes, on my 996.1 I've put in close to 10 quarts to get it to the full line on dipstick. Keep in mind the dipsticks got revised on the 996.2 to hold 1/2 qt less oil so as not to overload the aos... guess it was a compromise between having enough oil to lubricate in all conditions and not having to much so a spirited twisty run didn't puke out the aos.... Not sure less oil in a high 'G' cornering sports car is the correct answer for a faulty design aos..?
jmo
Yes, the 911s have a lot of oil capacity. Coolant as well. My old 1988 Carrera also had about 9.5 quarts. I guess that much oil is Porsches way of keeping the engine cleaner than, say, an engine with only 4-5 quarts.
Not the best decision IMHO at all....Lowering the oil level to stop smoking in high-G corners ( when it was the AOS design at fault) was a BAD decision in my book and increases the chance of oil starvation. But they had a disclaimer in the owners manual about high-G turns with" non-N rated tires" causing engine damage, but the embarrassment of the smoke on corners made them do it...Then they had Mann-Hummel design the Motorsports AOS which kept .5 qts oil held in the AOS body, that stopped the smoke but even more increases the chance of oil starvation in high-G corners..
..( yes the UAOS cures all this and more)
Yeah, forget oil brand, weight, oil analysis, etc. Getting a beautiful virgin woman to do this dance is really the key to the perfect Porsche oil change. The problem is that it is nearly impossible to find an "of age" beautiful virgin today.
Interesting fact about the 996.2 cars having dipsticks that read 1/2 qt. low to protect the AOS, I didn't know that. I assume that the dash gauge reads the same (low) on these cars? I can't help but think back to all of the threads were owners of these cars were stressing because they thought they overfilled their oil a bit...
Yes, the instrument cluster was re-programmed also to read a half quart lower.....The Porsche Gods were pissed....
Yes, many owners obsessed over "overfilling" by a smidgen, and many blew up on the track due to low oil levels....
All due to a crapy AOS........
Even the 944's with their little 2.5L 4cyl have a pretty high oil capacity compared to a lot of other engines.
I gotta say though, the only place I've ever read or heard the term "oil cooled" instead of just calling it air cooled has been on this forum. No offense, but I think its an absurd distinction, you might as well just say the 996 and any other ICE engine is oil cooled also.
