The sleeve idea is a good one, but I figure I can break every tab on the old socket, since the new one comes with all the parts to replace the old ones.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does this happen to everyone? I can't drive with the GPS plugged into the lighter socket without it popping out. Is there some kind of adapter I am missing? Even the Porsche battery charger doesn't seat into the socket cleanly. What gives?

POST 2Original post

socket = exceptionaly bigger.... it's because they know all P-car owners have bigger

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 7308741

Yup... happens to me also.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does it only accept German plugs or large junk? What do you do ?

POST 5Original post

take a map - return the GPS put some tape around the plug to make it feel fatter

POST 6Original post

there is a US version that fits our sizes.... replacement is a bit of a pain but worth while

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7308825

A US version of the lighter socket? Why wouldn't the Porsche branded battery charger fit in the stock socket? Makes no sense.

Welcome to German Engineering.... http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...Code=POTE996CM Cigarette Lighter Socket Upgrade - 1997-2001 models In 1997-2001 model Boxster (986) and Carrera (996) vehicles, many of the plugs and power adapters for accessory devices fit too loosely in the slightly larger diameter sockets. This causes intermittent contact or loose connections. This kit features the newer style DIN/SAE Standard cigar lighter assembly and fits most accessory plugs and adapters better. No mechanical or electrical modifications are necessary, it is a direct replacement. Comes with tension sleeve, light ring, and newer style lighter.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah, interesting. So, it's a PITA to replace this socket assembly??

POST 10Original post

any amount of PITA is worth it if the end result is a smaller hole

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 7308872

this man speaks the truth!!!!! But about the lighter socket, it looks like a simple DIY. Removing the center console is easy. It's just a plug to the cig. socket. Unplug it. Unplug the old socket with the tabs (careful)... then reverse with new socket.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 7309845

Hey Andy, mine did the same. You may find help at RadioShack for a few bucks. I went to RadioShack and bought a plug that was designed with 3-4 foot cord as an extension. It has a built in switch that kills power as well so I never touch the GPS for on/off. It stays put in the socket. Wish they made it shorter as it sticks out about 2 inches.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If this new socket cures the problem for $30 shipping, I'm psyched! Do I just pull the panel away from the dash to get at the back of the lighter socket, or what?

POST 20Original post

Andy, The "horseshoe" in held on by plastic tabs in the back of it and just pops off. Use a plastic spatula to get behind the horseshoe and pry the tabs out of the slots. Start at the bottom (on either side) and work you way up to the top and then back down the other side.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7310624

Cool, thanks Tim!

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 7310604

be careful with what you pry with. it might put an indentation on the leather dash. aside from the prying carefully, everything else is cake. to remove the switches, just push them in when you have the horseshoe off. you have an older car so the clips might be more brittle, just be careful.

POST 23Original post

I can't figure out how to post the link, but if you search under my user name "Rickker" for a thread "How to remove cigarette lighter socket", you will find a pic of a simple sleeve I made to correct this problem. It appeared to me, that it is not an easy job to replace the socket, as per the links and posts in the above thread. I have been using the sleeve around the GPS adaptor for several months, and it works just fine. GL. ....Rickker

Rickker, Where did you get that sleeve and/or how did you make it?? Thanks,

POST 27Original post

OK, NVM. I see you used 7/8 copper pipe. Thanks,

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The sleeve idea is a good one, but I figure I can break every tab on the old socket, since the new one comes with all the parts to replace the old ones.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 7312156

Right. I started off with a longer piece, and used a large drill bit with a piece of heater hose to spin the copper pipe in my drill press. Then used a file and later some emery paper to tweak both the ID and OD as needed. When the fit was right, I just cut off the copper pipe to the length shown in the pic. It's not a bad rework job, as only a minimal amount of material had to be removed from the 7/8" copper pipel ...Rickker

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I finally got around to replacing the lighter socket. I figured out how to get the old one out. Problem is, I assembled the new one out of sequence, and couldn't get the damned thing in without taking the plastic lighting sleeve out. Of course, I broke the thing trying to get it off the assembly. Another $30 to Suncoast - next time I'll know how to assemble the thing. Blah!

POST 31Original post

I just took a flathead screwdriver and expanded the metal contacts that touch the inside of the cigarette lighter. Works like a charm, and it's free. -td

POST 32Original post

IIRC, it's just the 99-01 cars that have this problem. The part was "updated" during the 02 facelift. My GT3 and Turbo have zero problems with the cig plug but my pre facelift cab needed the upgraded lighter socket. I did a write up over on Renntech some time back.

POST 34Original post

I just tinned with solder the ground connections on the adapter plug of the gps. But for those who cant solder just gently re shape with long nose pliers.

POST 35Original post

I guess this part is no longer available, the link now returns the dreaded:

POST 36Original post

There used to be some spacer that fit in there, have never been able to find one though. For now, my Garmin and Valentine 1 work fine. The connection can wobble though.

POST 38Original post

Thanks for this info. This has been bothering me.

POST 40Original post

I just removed my socket today as it wasn't working. I checked and I do have 12v coming from the plug, so I guess I need a new socket. I see it's nla from suncoast. Is it just a 2002 and up cigarette lighter I need? I see them for sale on eBay.

POST 41Original post

Mike, it could be just the fuse...check that before you buy/repair.

POST 42Original post

Quotes source post: 10829760

It wasn't the fuse. I have already removed (and destroyed). The old socket. I kind of need a replacement. In the worst case I'll buyba replacement oversized one since it's slightly better than a non functional one.

POST 43Original post

It still seems to be available. Just the link is different http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...Code=POTE996CM
