The **** sucker I sold it to, riced out the car, swapped the transmissions, gutted the interior, tried it to turn it into drift car...but didn't follow through.

996 or Porsche 911s maitain their value as used cars for two reasons- 911 Heritage, and Porsche badge.

Porsche needed to compete and in the late 90s Porsche was struggling, with out the 996 we would be without the current Porsche line up (I suspect many would like it that way).

If someone comes up with the cost efficient kit to replace the engine with Honda V6 or Chevy V8, somewhere under $10k...it will greatly rejuvinate the car.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just wanted to get the opinion of some others in the forum, but I have seen a slight uptick in the prices of 996s recently.
Ive had my 99 C2 for just under 10 years now and have read about 100 articles on its unreliability and how its inferior to the 993
The fact is the 996 is the closest modern Porsche to the 993, every new 911 is more refined than its predecessor.
The argument could be made all day in both directions on which is better, but the fact remains the 996 is a great car and currently available at a good price.
Also the 996/Boxster combo mass production is what saved Porsche. Porsche needed to compete and in the late 90s Porsche was struggling, with out the 996 we would be without the current Porsche line up (I suspect many would like it that way).
However at one point I watched prices get so low that I thought eventually my car would be worth as much as a used Corolla on the side of the road no matter how I care for it.
But then again try looking at it from my perspective
The 996 has 2 major quality flaws IMS failure and RMS leaks, this help drive the resale value of the 996 lower, however that lower price made the car attractive to buyers that were in the market for a cheap sports car. However the 996 is anything but cheap. Lets say you were able to get your hands on a ok condition 2nd or 3rd hand 996 with 50 to 75k miles on it for $12,000. Does that mean its cheaper to maintain? NO! So this buyer who bought this car cant afford to properly maintain the car. What does this mean for the 996 resale market?
I think these cars have been killed or parted out and this is still happening, I might be wrong but I think cleaner cars that are well maintained like mine are turning around and going up in price.
I am actually having the IMS replacement done on my car in the next few weeks (LN Engineering IMS replacement) while I have my clutch changed. Which will really give me more of peace of mind because I have 75k on my car and the IMS failure affected lower mile cars. But I think I will be driving my 996 for the rest of my life, even if I get a newer Porsche I see no reason to get rid of such a great car.
Hard to argue that the number of 996s being junked is probably higher than other models. In the case of an engine failure, for example, it may be equally (or less) expensive to just get another 996 - or another car. Unfortunately, unlike a Honda for which you can buy a used JDM motor for $500, an engine failure in a 996 may be a death sentence.
I think that 996 values will eventually rebound to a degree - the car has merits and earned rave (legitimate) reviews when it was released. It's a great car, albeit cursed with some technical flaws.
Of course, I own and love a C4 Corvette, so I obviously have an affinity for cars that others sniff at.
I got mine for $11.5k in April. 130k on it.
I am able to afford to fix it because it only cost $11.5k. The way I look at it, I have $4,000 to spend on maintenance now.
I just spent $1,400 on a new water pump and tensionors.

996 or Porsche 911s maitain their value as used cars for two reasons- 911 Heritage, and Porsche badge.
I bought mine because I wanted the 911, I liked the looks, and 911 is one of the most iconic cars out there.
For the price of $15-30k the non TT cars are selling for, you can get much better and much more reliable sports cars. But you don't buy a Porsche 911 for rational reasons. It is one of the two (or three) rear engined cars still being currently produced in the world. You buy the 911 because it is unique, and it stayed true to its roots for 50 years.
There will not be much rebound in prices. There are no drivers for that. Supply of 996s is plentiful, parts are extremely expensive, and 997/991 is a step above 996 in almost all respects. 996 is a great bargain to enter the Porsche badge and have 911 experience. The price will keep on falling the older the car gets. Right now, new engine is more expensive than than most 996s out there.
If someone comes up with the cost efficient kit to replace the engine with Honda V6 or Chevy V8, somewhere under $10k...it will greatly rejuvinate the car.
I would gladly pay $5,000-$10,000 to any company that could find a way to profesionally stuff a J32A2 Honda Motor from my Acura TL-S into the 996. With headers and intake it makes 300hp out of 3.2 liters. And it blows every porsche motor in existence away in reliability. There are motors with 400k on them on ALL ORIGINAL internals, with heads that were never lifted.
Here is a
thread
with mileage figures for J32A2 motors. And you can agree that mileages are in stark contrast with 996 "high mileage" threads. Performance difference in motors between Type-S and N/A 996s is minimal. Both rev to 7,000 RPM, both make about the same HP/Liter.
I bought a Porsche because it IS the reliable sports car.
I sold my Ferrari to get the Porsche because the yearly maintenance would be considerably less. And with a retirement and 2 college funds to fill up, it is nice to have a less costly car to drive. ( I have a Toyota and a Lexus too, economy personified.)
Really! its so over blown! ,im sick of it,every model/series had issues, these forums while great, also feed into the hype! do your research, take your time, you can find a great 996 out there!....enjoy
He says without sighting references.
Its okay, there are a bunch of new members who may have not been around for the other threads.
This is the internet, I am sure this is not the first re-post you have ever seen.
The 99 is the best model these days when avoiding engine issues. They very, very seldom ever crack heads and all the units that had slipped sleeves pretty much failed under warranty if the cars were driven enough. Couple that to the dual row IMSB and the fact that we've never seen a timing chain fail in a 99, its clear to see that they are the best kept secret in the 996 world, at least from an engine aspect.
I've owned a lot of these cars and I prefer the earliest 99 I can find. I have tested over 75 different 996s this year so far and I at least put 50 miles on every one of them following our procedures. You can blindfold me and put me in three different 996s and I can tell you which one is the early 99.
Seems a bit odd to me that an owner of 10 years of a 996 that has read 100s of articles has just joined these forums just now.
Another odd thing is why discuss price and resale if you plan to drive it the rest of your life? Assuming you're really keeping yours, how does this impact you and why worry or bring it up as one of your first post?
First time actually joining this forum, I usually post in our PCA forum. Looks as though there aren't a ton of people with 996s here.

Welcome...quick question for the OP...Is your 240z sick? Why do you have to keep it in a bubble, so it doesn't get the other cars sick as well? I don't think I have ever seen that in my life.
DS
Lol it doesn't fit in the garage because I have two other cars in there, so the car bubble is like a temporary garage. Didn't want my fully restored paint job left to the elements.
Thanks that is great to know… I guess that is also the reason the class action lawsuit against Porsche for the IMS issue doesn’t include early models?
Do you agree with my statement about 996s not being cared for actually helping the value?
Welcome to the Rennlist forums. Very nice nice car indeed(oh, the black one ain't bad either).
Which pic is the latest as one has silver wheels and the other has black wheels, not to mention the fender emblem?
Any more pics of your front end?
Original engine or conversion on the Datsun?
Here is a link to a previous thread showing some build dates of members cars. Looks like Redbarn has the earliest.

Thanks lol yea the Z is a fun car very simple all around car, engine is stock with a few modifications.
I have a set of silver Carrera classics and a set of Black both 19in off a 997s suspension was done by TKX here in NY a few years ago about 1.5 inch lowering.
The fender emblem and headlight covers are now gone trying for a cleaner all black look. Wing and side view mirrors are carbon fiber, and fabspeed strait pipes.
Chris,
I think users (non members) are limited to how much they can upload. If you pay $18ish for a year and become a member, the amount you can upload goes up significantly, if not unlimited.

I can relate. I had a 240sx coupe, one owner; pristine in every way except rust was attacking it in almost every area. Sunroof, under fenders, shock towers. Despite the rust, I loved that car. Terrific balance for a car from 1990, great brakes, very well built. I sold it to get a 540i, I still regret that decision. My 240sx was probably one of the cleanest and unmolested coupes around. Everything worked, including the HUD. Grandpa who I got it from had it since new.
The **** sucker I sold it to, riced out the car, swapped the transmissions, gutted the interior, tried it to turn it into drift car...but didn't follow through. I saw the car on sale on craigslist, almost cried.

Interesting. Hard to tell from the pics but did you take the matte wrap all the way down past the hood? I never would've thought about doing that but it somehow works and looks good(to me at least).
With the black and black theme, it would look even more wicked IMO if you did the headlight mod.
This is gonna be my winter project.
I have when they first came out but like you, I wasn't a fan of the LED's and also the bowl still being chrome didn't flow well for me either, not to mention the sub-par lense optics. In my experience, I've also found a lot of the aftermarket lights uses thinner and more brittle plastics which I've had issues with in the past.
Thanks it's vinyl wrap on the hood, roof and part of the engine lid. Had it dip down on to the bumper thought it looked cool and if it didn't I would peel it right off.

I already ordered a kit from Fred.
A very cool guy that happens to have CNC connections and technical/design abilities to come up with a very nice product. I was just going to piece together my own until I came across his post and the custom made shrouds he is able to offer is worlds ahead of anything I could've done and very factory looking if I may say so.
I plan on to put up a side by side comparison once I'm done with the conversion. And since I have the factory OEM Litronics currently, I should be able to get a good comparison.
