This time I change lanes and I see that he really is trying and first thing that comes to mind is "hmm, that POS actually reached 90mph" so I speed up and switch lanes as my exit is coming up.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sometimes I actually get tired driving the 996 and enjoy my daily driver.....2004 Jaguar X-Type. It seems every car wants to pass or race me for some reason. Problem is, gets dangerous when they are right on your rear or cut you off to make a point and post it on some message board they beat a 911. Anyone else experience this?
My 2004 Jaguar is my cheap, daily driver and AWD for the snow/winter time. I love it that the car blends in. The BBS rims on it are my summer rims....winter and snow tires go on soon and the 996 goes in the garage for the Colorado snow season.
In my country there is a saying "give way to the fool". I have not had many negative encounters in my 911 in the past 2.5 months I had. Most people move over for me on the highway.
If someone wants to pass me, I will slow down. I really don't care if civic or some other ****box passes me. He is in the civic, I am in 911. They want to prove something by beating a 911, that says it all.
It doesn't happen often. But, if I'm at a traffic light and some gayboy ricer (someone used that phrase recently in another thread, and I think it's hilarious) wants to race, I pretend like I'm going to. When the light changes I may zip ahead a few feet, then back off... let that chump get the ticket or get hit by someone flying through a red light, is my opinion.
Quit left lane camping, maybe you wouldn't be cut off.
Just kidding...
I actually haven't had It happen to me once while living here. Back when I used to live in the North East though, as long as I drove something semi-sporty, I'd get kids trying to race me all the time.
All the time. It's thugs in dodge chargers around here, having to prove their ability to drive 80 in a 45mph zone. I get these "fly-bys" all the time, especially since I usually only drive 5 over, which is slow by Jacksonville standards.
Once it was actually a brand new Cayenne haha!
I was at a stop light recently with the top down. A middle aged guy pulls up in an old sedan, looks over at me says, "You want to go?". I said "Excuse me?". He says, "next, light you want to go?", and points to the next traffic light about a qtr mile down the road.
I asked him, "do YOU want to go?". He chuckles, shakes his head and says, "No. Not at all!"
To answer the OP's question, the answer is "all the time". With me, the other guy always wins.
I think everyone gets it from time to time. With all the newer cars coming out with some decent hp, they know that 0-60 times would be fairly matched on some of these "regular" vehicles. They know they have a fair chance and the payoff of stroking their ego is worth it to them. Now if you were driving a Turbo, that might make some think twice(at least the smart ones).
Evo and WRX's are pretty much not even worth trying as any competent driver will beat the Porsche everytime in a straight line to 60. Another surprise is the Hyundai Genesis 3.8. Don't underestimate those either...
The a genesis Coupe is a competent car. It was on my short list before I bought my 996.
I live in northern Louisiana and there aren't many competent high speed drivers or vehicles that can compete with a 14 year old Porsche. That said, a 24 year old girl in an SUV with a cell phone up to her ear looked my way then launched out of a green light with a big smile on her face.
Another morning, some guy with a family sedan, loaded with family started revving his engine at a stop light then launched at the green. I have had a hundred of these experiences. I ignore 90 percent of them. I'm convinced most people just want to see a "power demo" from you more than they want to race. The only time I'll school someone is if they are in a ridiculous tuner car and they look like they have more of mommy and daddy's money than brain cells. I'll beat them to the speed limit then let them go.
Actual attempts to try to race me weren't very common for me when I had the 996. Most of the time it was someone who just wanted to hear me rip on the car.
Yep - quite often and sometimes it's the middle aged females that blow my mind. I no longer let it get to me and just go about my business. Whatever blows their skirt up is fine with me these days.
It's the tailgaters that get to me! Yahoo's in pickups usually...pull up about 2 inches off the bumper and all you can see out the rear view is GRILLE. Otherwise, I ignore anyone that wants a go at me, and they try all the time. My thinking is, they're driving a piece of crap and I'm enjoying my Porsche! Okay, I'm not that much of a snob..really. Plenty of decent cars on the road, but I'm partial to my 911.
^^^ ditto
If it is any consolation, the tailgating problem is lots worse in my MR2 Spyder. 911 seems to have lots more car to prevent them from driving up and over me.
I do love when people rev at stoplights. Everyone usually gets a kick, especially young kids in civics, when they hear the muffler bypass x51 rev back. I got clocked at nationals at 99.7db by the way; the limit is 100!
It has rarely happened to me in my 996. I think it has probably been less than five times. A couple of those were guys in Subaru WRXs. Interestingly one was a guy in a Jeep Cherokee. I'm not sure what he was trying to prove...
I have no interest in street racing. I just let the idoits pass me.
+996 5CHN3LL
And then there are those that will rev their engine at stop lights I will pretend that I'm going to race them then as soon as it turns green I let them take off and even drive slower then I usually do. Makes them feel like an idiot and most of the time they don't even come next to me at the next light.
It's always the WRX's, it's as if they will feel better about their choice of transportation if they can just get to the next stop light faster than me.
I don't think I am ever as big an elitist snob as when I am in this spot. Rolls Royce? Let's do this. (That actually happened.). V8 Mustang. Let's go. V6 Mustang? Nope. Anything riced? Take a hike kid. Corvette? Let's run. Quattroporte? Hells yes.
Now this is where you hand brake comes in very handy. As the tailgater gets close to your tail, you push the button on the hand brake and pull up but off immediately. The brake lights do not come on from the hand brake. They are activated by the foot brake. When they realize they are almost toooo close they **** themselves and brake, you bang your toe down and leave them in a cloud of dust. It's a nice way of telling the jerk that they are tooooooo close. Even if you can't scream away because of traffic in front, That action scares them enough to make them back off. Do it again to them and the penny should drop. DO NOT do this if they are really tooooooooooooooo close for obvious reasons.
5CHN3LL and 996pp so you both know the correct color of the 'can't get it up' pill. Whoops so do I hahaha.
I just let the wannabe racers go on a straight road. Hell, you can make a F-150 quick off the line. In the twisties, another story.
Most people who tailgate simply cannot hang with me in the curves. Pretty sad.
I'll pull out of my neighborhood into a gap in traffic in the morning and you'd have thought I insulted the next car's driver's grandmother. But a couple of 90 deg. turns later, they get the message.
I appreciate cars and drivers with moxie--as long as they're smart. WRX's, Genesis' and even Mustangs/Camaros/Charger SRT's--glad to see them out there but if you want to drive fast, go to track day. Don't play in traffic.
TC
While I'm not into street racing, it is fun to pull off of a highway exit ramp with a loop at a decent rate of speed with a tailgater behind you. They always try to stay with you... For a little while.
Funny story:
Had a guy in a really beat up spray can flat black painted Toyota Corolla or some POS try me on the Turnpike one day. I see him tailgate me at 75mph so pull away thinking nothing of it and like a minute later he is back at about 90mph. This time I change lanes and I see that he really is trying and first thing that comes to mind is "hmm, that POS actually reached 90mph" so I speed up and switch lanes as my exit is coming up. Well this guy digs deep for all the Toyota has to offer and tries to hand with me into the off ramp and to my horror and a split second later his he uses my line and brake lights a queue to apply his, LMAO. So I start my braking and veer right of course he is going way to fast locks up instead I can see his front wheels at full lock and yet his car is still going straight about to plow into 3 cars waiting to make a left. At the last possible second his tires grab and amidst a cloud of smoke ends up between the cars making a left and a curb.
The stain he must have left on that Toyota's seat will never come out.
Decades ago while on the interstate in Florida in my 1968 911 a car kept pacing behind me at all speeds, much younger and much, much dumber, I took her up to 115 MPH and then stupidly decided to downshift, nail my brakes, and then punch it to take off. The sight of the car in my rear view mirror going into a spin and then on to the shoulder of the road with dirt flying was at first satisfying, until I realized what a stupid and dangerous move I just made. I like to play at times, but I guess in my old age I am more about safety first. Bruised egos are one thing, battered bodies are something else.
Today one of those brown delivery trucks cruised by me in the right hand lane and took my exit in front of me. I doubt he was trying to impress me but I kept my distance and couldn't believe that one of those trucks could lean so far to the rignt and stay on the road. Maybe it was a "time is money" thing.
Racing off the line is good as it can confirm a few things:
Our Porsches aren't all that.
Your launch technique/skills suck.
The motor is tired.
You need more actual performance mods other than pumpkins and iPad installations.
You shouldn't have gotten those heavy wheels.
You need an ssk or if you have one, you need to adjust them correctly.
You need to quit filling up your gas tank all the way.
People don't bother me on the highway or at lights. And I've found they will move over too w the 911... When I had my little 3 series I was constantly being harassed by all kinds. It was annoying.
My buddy had the 996 Tt - chipped to 550hp - used to get mustangs and the like always wanting to challenge. Being Italian he HAD to humiliate them. Going over the local bridge one day he took it up to 150 .. Wind blew off the cover to the side engine inlet .. That was a part that had to be flown in from the motherland at vast expense ..
Yeah happens to me quite often - especially the pick up truck guys - dont typically bother to even try - I'm not going to try beat someone with no brains and get a big ticket ....
I agree - it's a male thing. Emasculated guys in Subarus or ricers are the worst!
Given that the typical (newer) WRX is worth more than the typical 996, we didn't buy these cars for status or to impress the neighbours - we bought them because they're fun to drive!
If my wife is with me in the car, I'll jam it up to second gear, then back off like I lost....ill say its her 100lbs that made the difference. She thinks its hilarious. A4's and 3 series BMWs the most with kids with baseball caps on sideways.
I've had a few cars pull up close to the rear end when stopped at a light and I can see them trying to read the Porsche Carerra badge. Then I can see them say "Oh it's a Porsche". No harm, no foul.
Whew I'm glad for this thread. I thought I was imagining things but occasionally cars pull up alongside me then "zip" away like I'm supposed to go after them or something.
