Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Patient: 1999 Carerra Cabriolet Symptoms: - Courtesy Lights do not come on when a door is opened. Neither do door lights. - Courtesy Lights work fine otherwise (three way switches turn them on/off and permanent off position works too) Situation: - Dealers keep saying that it is the Ignition switch (taken it to two different dealers) - Ignition switch has been replaced, no change, still no lights - Dealer says Key should "clunk" when removed. Currently does not "clunk" (not sure what this is) - Dealer plugged it in to their computer and confirmed that a Vehicle Handover occurred. No faults in the system. - The Alarm system was replaced a few years ago by a prior owner. Solutions: - Please help!!

POST 2Original post

No faults in the alarm module too? Did you check and see if it is wet down there and all the connectors are tight with no corrosion on the connectors?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The dealer said there were no faults on the Alarm Module too. I have used my cheap OBD2 reader as well and did not find any Faults. I'll be going under the seat to check the Alarm Module connectors etc. in the next few days but the car is kept inside and it doesn't really rain here. Good idea - thanks.

POST 4Original post

There are two parts to the ignition "switch" - one is the cheap electrical switch, and the other is the more expensive mechanical steering lock assembly. While the cheap one is usually the culprit, the missing "clunk" that is supposed to happen when the key is removed may be a symptom that the more expensive part is in need of replacing. Pelican Parts pricing for the switch only ranges from $11 to $33. The mechanical (steering lock assembly) part is $180.50.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do you think a problem with the mechanical portion of the Lock could affect the courtesy lights? I guess its possible that the mechanical portion is not leaving the electrical switch in the correct"off" state when the key is being pulled.

POST 6Original post

When the "cheap" switch went bad in my Boxster, I had trouble getting the key out, but the electrical stuff was still working as expected. Perhaps someone who has had to have it replaced will chime in.

POST 7Original post

Nothing what so ever to do with your ignition switch. Its the alarm module that is still in sports car delivery mode and needs to be put right. Only a Porsche place can do this via there special testers. I had the same problem for 18 months. It cost me 80 dollars at Porsche in Lancaster PA and they fixed it within the hour. I kept this full report especially for you and other posters with the same problem.. here it is When my wife bought my car for my 70th birthday, She didn't noticed (or was she told by the dealer) that the inside dome lights and the little door lights, did not come on as the fob or the key manually was used in either door. The petrol door had a part missing so it was always unlocked. I could however turn on the dome and map lights, manually but not the bottom of the door lights. I searched for 18 months and tried everything until I was blue in the face. Eventually a chap in the UK on a forum suggested that my car appeared to be still in Transit/handover mode which was controlled from the alarm module which is situated underneath the driver’s seat on my 99 996. I believe that when a car is being transported between garages, the Porsche dealers put the alarm system into this mode via their diagnostic tool. That way the alarm does not keep going off for whatever reason. Everything else worked on the car BTW. Even the alarm was still working although NOT the flashing turn signal part as I locked or unlocked the doors with key or fob. I could however hear a clicking sound when locking and unlocking which after repair turned out to be the sound of the un working turn signals (a visual aid part of the locking and unlocking of the car). The guy on the forum suggested I take it to a Porsche dealer for them to check the 'special menu' of the alarm module. I did, and it was in fact in the transit/sport car hand over mode. Mine is a Cabriolet BTW and has the hard top which was on the car during purchase. When postings where being made on THAT forum, another chap was having similar problems with his car. He took his car to Porsche and came back on the forum saying all was good now after they returned the module into normal mode. He had been trying for many months to solve his problem. I don’t know exactly what was not working correctly but it was electrical in nature and no matter how everyone tried, he or anyone else including Indy's could not solve the issue. That’s when I took mine, an hour afterwards, everything worked fine. Including the petrol door. They ordered the missing part to the door which the pin went through. 2 days after, I put the part on in 2 seconds. BTW the bolt arm was not working, but is now. The turn indicators flash twice on locking and once on unlocking. That’s when I discovered that the flashing sound was in fact the indicators trying to come on but couldn’t. Now they do. Everything now works perfectly on the car.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Hurd. I have gone to two different Porsche dealers and they both told me that the car is not in Delivery mode. Not sure I believe them but what else can I do?

POST 9Original post

QUOTE=sjg1138;10799928]Thanks Hurd. I have gone to two different Porsche dealers and they both told me that the car is not in Delivery mode. Not sure I believe them but what else can I do?[/QUOTE] I HAD TO INSIST THAT THEY GO INTO THE (SPECIAL MENU MODE').... WITH THEIR TESTERS.. Take it into them again and insist because they are wrong. show them my posting. print it out. that's what I had to do to convince Lancaster Porsche. Otherwise you will be looking to solve this for the next 18 months. Or go to the next city and get Porsche to do it there. Let me ask you this, when you lock the car via your key fob button. Do you see the turn singnals flash back and front, two times on locking, and one time on opening? I take everything back if the alarm system is working correctly. Anyway here is a link to the page where the solving was carried out. Print this opage and take it with you next time. http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...en-doors-open/

POST 10Original post

Do the courtesy/door lights work when the passenger door is opened? If the problem is just with one door, it's likely the door latch. Otherwise, it's probably a coding issue.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, the Courtesy lights do not work when either the passenger or the driver doors are open. The thing is, I took it to a dealer that I trust, and they assured me that the Vehicle Handover was not the problem. They hooked it up to their computer and checked. Could they have made an error? I really wish I could see it for myself.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 10800264

Even if a Vehicle Handover has been performed, there still could be incorrect coding in the Alarm System. For instance, if it is coded for a vehicle without interior lighting, the lights won't turn on when the doors are opened or when the car is unlocked with the fob. I would have them manually code the alarm system to the vehicle. My guess is that it wasn't coded properly when it was replaced under prior ownership. Am I right in assuming that the interior lights haven't been functioning correctly since you got the car?

POST 13Original post

Like I said, spend the 5 min and check the simple stuff first like the connectors to the alarm for tightness and corrosion. Come back after that. I had the same thing happen before due to that.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats right Tim. The lights have not worked since I got the car. Also the new Alarm box was installed by an Indy. From what I can tell, the Indy then took the car to a Dealer to have it coded. Very possible that the Dealer did not code it properly at the time. I have had very bad experiences with the particular Dealer. I have to say, being so dependent on a Dealer to program my car is really frustrating, not to mention all the wasted time, effort and gas from driving to the Dealer. This weekend I will get under the seat and clean up the Alarm box connectors.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh and the Alarm seems to be operating normally. The lights blink when I use the fob to unlock and lock the car. Also when the Alarm is turned on the red blinking light comes on on the dash.

PIWIS Cable and software will allow you to set some parameters or check it without having to hassle with the dealer.

POST 17Original post

and the PIWIS can be found at PORSCHE garages. How far is it to drive to another Porsche Garage? They need to go into the "Special Menu" via the PIWIS.

POST 18Original post

I meant Piwis copy that's available on many of the obd2 diagnostic sellers.
