Suggestion
it's sort of annoying and I have to make a conscious effort to keep checking my speed.

It's a circle with a slash through it, followed by a number that changes periodically as I am driving, but I don't know what it is a number representing.

I have a US spec car, and I love the ability to change the read out to KPH, and have it right in the centre..cool.

OK, when I was driving the car this evening, I pushed that button, and I guess it did reset the odometer, but the defaults that are on the screen are temp and some other thing I can't figure out.
So, when they say, for example, "go 1/4 mile, turn left, go 1/2 mile, turn right, go 1/4 mile, turn right..." it is too hard to keep resetting the odometer using the computer, while also driving and looking for the property, and reading the
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
I've got a 2002 Targa and it displays the mph digitally in the left display under the speed gauge. I've seen a bunch of pics where guys have their digital mph displayed below the tachometer, but can't figure out how to set it in my car. Is this something I can do, or a feature of the Mk I cars?
Thanks,
Chris
In 2002+ cars, you can use the on board computer to set a variety of things to be the default displays in the center window beneath the tachometer. Speed isn't one of them.
Personally, I find the whole on board computer to be very poor. Trying to remember whether to push the lever forward, pull it back, or push it in from the side for each function change is nearly impossible. And trying to do simple things while driving, like resetting the odometer, is crazy. What were they thinking with that thing?
There are still a few functions I can't figure out, and the manual is useless. It just says something along the lines of "It is impossible for this manual to cover all of the functions of the on board computer." WTF???
Does anyone know of any documents that explain each of the functions, and other details regarding the on board computer? Thanks in advance!
I haven't found it to be too difficult. What specifically are you trying to do? Also, I actually prefer the location of the speed display in the MK II.
Is there an easy way to reset the odometer without going through sub-menus? For work, I am often looking for companys by following Mapquest print-outs. So, when they say, for example, "go 1/4 mile, turn left, go 1/2 mile, turn right, go 1/4 mile, turn right..." it is too hard to keep resetting the odometer using the computer, while also driving and looking for the property, and reading the
map directions. Also, I can't figure out a few of the items that are displayed, end there is no explanation in the manual.
I had my Mk1 for 7 years and apparently subconsciously got used to reading the speed below the tach. That's why I got a ticket for accelerating hard on a freeway on ramp, thinking I was only doing only 70.
I really wasn't aware I was going that fast. I got pulled over by the HP and verbally told I was clocked at 97 in a 65. My radio was up and my detector was chirping and flashing, but I distinctly remember seeing I was doing only 70. It was my temperature below the tach that I saw, thinking all along it was my speed. This was in my '04 Turbo.
There is a quick shortcut for that. Just push and hold the button on the left side of the gauge cluster with the little picture of a light bulb and "0.0" printed on it. It will reset the trip meter to 0.0. No need to go into the menus.
I'm curious about the others.
One thing that I really like about the menus is the "reset all" function. This is quick and easy right after you fill up with gas. In my Cayenne, you have to scroll through the menu and reset each individual thing. It's a PITA.
Ya another great thing is the display under the tach can be changed to kilometers witch in my case is good because I have a us car speedometer is in miles
I find the speedometer in my 02 essentially worthless. It is either blocked by my left hand or the steering wheel almost all of the time.
Having the MPH in the center stack in my 99 was a ton better. I too have thought I was going 67*FPH (Fahrenheit per hour) a couple times.
ditto
Reading the gauge while driving is +/- 15 mph accuracy unless you stop looking at the road. It's useless when you need to drive the speed limit. I hate 25 mph speed zones. I can go 20 mph in a school zone no problem, but the car accelerates and deccelerates too quickly to hold 25 and the cruise control is challenged under 30. I have a 99 so the cc is mechanical, later cars may not be as lurchy under 30.
OK, when I was driving the car this evening, I pushed that button, and I guess it did reset the odometer, but the defaults that are on the screen are temp and some other thing I can't figure out. So, I need to fiddle with the default displays.
The one I cant figure out... It's a circle with a slash through it, followed by a number that changes periodically as I am driving, but I don't know what it is a number representing. Currently, the number is 37. 37 what??? (see picture below)
Oh, and regarding the speedometer off to the side... yep... it's sort of annoying and I have to make a conscious effort to keep checking my speed. And, as said above, it's often hard to see due to being blocked by my hand or the steering wheel. I, too, have driven around at 67 ! per hour, before realizing it was the temperature I was looking at.
Yep. But as you may be able to infer from the outside temp., I was out in the desert. Straight as an arrow road, not another car in sight. My camera was out because I had been using it for work, so I just snapped a quick pic. I don't think any more dangerous than eating a hamburger while driving (which I sometimes do, since I'm on the road a lot).
Average speed? Hmm... you're probably right. The day that picture was taken, I had driven about 300 miles through the desert, and I probably averaged 80 mph. But, I suppose if it's been a long time since resetting, it would also average in the trips to the grocery store, etc. I try to stay below 70 mph for those outings.
Is a zero with a slash through it some German symbol for "average?"
Still not cool man. I don't care about the speed itself as I have no room to talk based on my past, but at that kind of speed taking a pic, eating a hamburger, or talking on a mobile is just flat dangerous. Things change at that speed way too fast.
Why do people never ask about the key? In the last 24 hours I've given the key to my P!g to two people. Both looked confused that it wasn't on the right, then figured it was keyless, tossed the key in the cup holder, and got confused again about the lack of a start button. I had to given in and tell them as I didn't have time to wait forever...
Interestingly I always bitched about the key placement on my wife's 996 since I didn't drive it often. Now that I have my 958 I bitch about the key being wrong in her BMW. Shocking how quickly my muscle memory changed...
Do you hear your car beep at 37mph? There should be an alarm option when you hit certain speed. My boxter had that, not sure if the 911 does too as I haven't got around to installing my computer yet. I am assuming its the same computer.
No beep at 37. Although, a couple weeks ago, it beeped at some speed (musta been about 75 or so) and I have no idea why. It hasn't done that since, however.
Also, that speed beep thingy was lit up green in the picture above (just to the right of center on speedometer), but for some reason is not currently lit. I know there's a description of it somewhere in the owner's manual (I read that section of the manual quite some time ago, but have since forgotten it). I haven't bothered to look it up again, since I seem to recall that it doesn't look like a feature that is of any use to me.
That's not a speed beep thingy its cruise control on/off. if its on it means you can set cruise control. you change it with lower right stack.
The beep can be turned on and off. Maybe right now its set at 37mph but OFF, if you figured out how to turn it on it would beep at 37mph.
What you're seeing is the average speed.
You can go into the menu and modify the display to show whatever you prefer in the default setting. If you set it to your trip meter then you won't have to toggle through menus when you reset the mileage.
