The ins company wanted me to keep the car at my house for 5 days until they could send an adjuster out and he can't "adjust" it.

They know how much they pay out in a year and adjust premiums accordingly and add in the profit they want to make.

IIRC he'd transfer 1/2 the agreed upon price to my checking account now and arrange a truck to pick up the car at which time I'd hand over the salvage title, keys, and I'd get a check for the remaining amount or possibly a wire transfer of the remaining balance to my checking account.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally got home. I am scarred for life. I had to watch to police officer put down the deer.
Last weekend me and the kids took off the front bumper, cleaned the radiators, polished the bumper, polished the headlights. There were a few broken trim pieces underneath so I ordered new ones.
Then this -
Bumper, hood, fender, headlight, door, and rocker all dented. I assume the radiator and condenser are toast also. Plus various trim pieces.
Can't wait for the estimate.
Smacked a mule deer with my 996 (Turbo). Bumper cover, headlight, radiator, A/C condenser, fender, hood, tires (passenger side ruined and both were replaced because the tread depth difference would have been too great), wheel (went out for refinishing but was ruined), all of the gas tank vapor recovery hardware located under the passenger fender, and paint. Cost: $25K.
Oh, a pic:
There is a real possibility that they may write the vehicle off. The cost of repairs may be way higher than you imagine. Then it's time to upgrade to a 997. What year is your car and current value before the smash?
Oh the horror the cop put down the deer. If the one that stepped out in front of my car that night had hung around I'd beat it to death with my cell phone and butchered it with my fingernail clippers.
The deer walked away, though on 3 legs... Damn hard headed desert scrub rat.
Tried buffing it out today. No better. Oh well. I guess I will take it to a body shop.
Car is at my house. Insurance guy is coming to my house this week to check it out. Can't wait.
I am wondering about a Porsche specific body shop if there is such a thing. Anyone know any good body shops is Akron?
Look for a Porsche Approved Collision Center in your area. The damage is not severe the only tub or chassis damage is likely to be the shelf the passenger side fender bolts to it bent down a bit. The one on my car was.
Be aware the insurance company may want to use salvaged or used parts. Based on my limited experience with my cars (I went through 3 Porsche wrecks in one year... not a good year... and none my fault, one cost me a new Cayman S) the salvaged/used parts are probably in worse shape than the parts on the car...
Porsche is very explicit about what it takes to do a proper repair of these cars. All mechanical work must be done by a Porsche tech at an authorized dealer. Parts must be new and bought through PCNA and from a dealer. Remind the insurance company it has been charging you Porsche premiums and it can't go all Ford Festiva cheap on your car's repair...
I am not worried about used parts. When the BMW hit the deer I got all new OEM parts for it, no questions asked. The body shop said using OEM new parts is easier and cheaper in the long run, no work to make it fit.
My ins co has to be pissed. I am paying $110/month to ins the Porsche which I thought was outrageous, but after only $220, they have to repair the car.
But I never feel bad for ins agencies. They know how much they pay out in a year and adjust premiums accordingly and add in the profit they want to make. And for all our cars and drivers I am paying almost $6000/year, so even with this repair they will have their money back shortly.
Not half as pissed as my insurance company. I signed up for insurance on the car when I bought it on the 19th of June. On the 3rd of July I hit the mule deer and the then comes what proved to be a claim nearly half of what I paid for the car.
'course the insurance company pissed me off with the advise I have the car repaired at a local gas station and drive it home.
I see you are near me. Any body shops you would trust? Adjuster in coming in AM. I am now leaning to one in Cleveland affiliated with the Porsche dealer. I would hate to have something stupid happen like the wrong coolant with some air left in after they switch the radiator.
As an aside, did any one else ever notice that this site auto corrects porsche to Porsche?
Just an update. Adjuster is at the house. The can not open the hood up front to look for damage and need it towed to a shop for inspection. The ins company wanted me to keep the car at my house for 5 days until they could send an adjuster out and he can't "adjust" it. Oh, and he is going to get "salvage bids". Uh oh.
Sad to hear about your deer story. You have three options.
1. Take a different route next time.
2. Slow down.
3. Hire DT to sue the deers family for damages because he is an accident expert.
Disclaimer: Just kidding.
Side note: Divot, your avatar section is troubling.
I was only going 35 mph when I hit it. I did not even see it until it thunked the car. Wish I could take a different route. Or I was in my wife's excursion when I hit it.
Just got the adjustor's estimate. He is at $7400 so far, but he can't assess for structural or other damage until it gets to a shop, but won't have it towed to a body shop until he gets an estimate of the value of the car by looking for the last 30 similar cars sold in a 10 mile radius.
He said he won't get a body shop estimate until her knows where the estimate has to be. This seems a little dishonest.
OK. Starting to get a little nervous. Spoke with the adjuster again and he is looking for salvage offers and then going to add the repair cost for a total loss calculation.
This leaves me wondering how much a salvage shop will pay. Any guesses? I will let you all know what he says.
And he has not yet been able to come up with a value for the car overall. The system could not find the number of sales needed in the radius required for a similar car. I am interested to see how it turns out. If I took all my values from posts on this site I would guess a 1999 Carrera 4 Cab with 38,000 miles is worth a lot less than 20K, but for the life I me I can not find these cars. Anything comparable I find on line they are asking in the high 20's. When I look for cars on ebay for 911's between 99-01, there are over 60 cars and only 2 AWD cabs.
Guess I will just keep waiting.
If you want your own salvage estimate give Oklahoma Foreign a call and see if it is interested in your car as a salvage car.
I called about my wrecked (and totaled) Cayman S. The person (his name I forgot) I spoke to directed me to take pictures -- digital camera not cell phone -- and send them to him.
He called back with a number and told me if I wanted to do business how the process would work. IIRC he'd transfer 1/2 the agreed upon price to my checking account now and arrange a truck to pick up the car at which time I'd hand over the salvage title, keys, and I'd get a check for the remaining amount or possibly a wire transfer of the remaining balance to my checking account.
The insurance company came through with the same number.
However, I retained ownership of the car -- it is a long story why this came about -- and sold it at a salvage car auction at a large auto auction facility near me for a few thousand over what I had been offered.
Well, numbers are in.
Value of car = $26,000
Highest salvage bid = $6,000
Therefore - have almost $20,000 to repair the car
It is getting towed to the body shop this AM
Update:
Got the car back yesterday. Body shop did awesome work. Car looks new.
2 funny stories
Body shop was 40 min from my house. Had my son drive me out and drop me off. Went to write a check for $8000 for the repair (ins sent me the check) and the body shop said they did not take checks. I went to get my wallet out and forgot it at home. Then lost my cool because I had to be back at work in 40 minutes and dropped the F bomb and yelled at the body shop. Went home and got my wallet, stopped at the bank and took out cash, then walked back into the body shop and apologized for my behavior and drove home.
Second story. I have had the car 3 months and still no title. Dealer where I bought in in New Jersey (Thrift Auto Sales if anyone cares)would not return my calls. Called the bank and they said car had a valid NJ title register to some other dealer not Thrift. I called thrift and said I think the sold a stolen car. The manager called me back - this was 5 weeks ago when the car was in the shop - and he told me they were the title experts and they would handle it. They left a message with my wife that the car needed an Ohio e-check and VIN search from Ohio before they would transfer the title. So I waited. And waited. Got the car back and went to the DMV and got the e-check and the VIN check. Talked to the person at the DMV title dept and they said both of the things I just did were a waste of time until the Tile Bureau in Ohio gets the title from NJ. Called Thrift Auto Sales in NJ and the manager would not talk to me. He just wanted me to mail the VIN check and e-check. I had to inform the secretary that neither of these were needed and all they had to do was mail the title and copy of the bill of sale to the Ohio title bureau and then we could do the VIN check and e-check and I could get the title. He got mad and told the secretary to mail me the title and I could take care of it.
That is all they have needed to do for the last 3 months. And they didn't. I called back later to see if they mailed the title and the said the had to get it from the "broker" first.
I think I see a lawyer in my future.
Sorry the post was so long, but I have to vent.
Yep, you've waited long enough on the title. Go ahead and sue them now or you'll be waiting forever. Probably some issue with their floor plan. Get the judgment ASAP and make a claim on their dealer bond with the state before someone else does. If they are having this type of title problem with your car, they are having the same with other cars they've sold.
Cars not registered. The sent me 3 temp tags, but NJ only allows temps for 90 days so I can't get another one. Chase bank financed it. I called them and asked if they did a title check. They said the did and the car has a clear NJ title registered to deluxe motors. They called deluxe motors and there is no answer. I bought the car from Thrift Auto Sales. They claim they have the title. They were going to overnight it to me on Thursday. Confirmed with the secretary at Thrift that it went out. Should have arrived by now.
Called NJ title bureau and they said to file an "investigation"
I am really curious to see where this leads...
Finally some closure and good news.
A package arrived from the dealer. It had the title and a check for $2000. Turns out the dealer had no idea how to transfer a title. The had to refund my sales tax and fees they had me pay.
Went to the DMV, paid the Ohio taxes and in less than 15 minutes had a plate and was good to go.
Now maybe I can enjoy the car.
