However, by itself a heavier clutch doesn't necessarily mean the clutch needs to be replaced unless it is extremely heavy.

But whenever someone else would drive my car they would comment that the pedal felt heavy until I replaced the spring.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
I've got a 2002 Targa with 80k miles, 30k miles on current clutch. Clutch pedal is not extremely heavy, but a pain when stuck in traffic and makes it hard for a smooth takeoff sometimes. Took it in for some minor work today and mechanic agreed it was heavier than most. I had him inspect the clutch assist spring and he said it was fine.
Any other ideas on what might be causing the heavy pedal?
Thanks!
Chris
Heavy clutch pedal is sometimes a sign the clutch is worn. As the friction disc loses material (both sides btw) the clutch lever loses some mechanical advantage and a heavier clutch is the result.
However, by itself a heavier clutch doesn't necessarily mean the clutch needs to be replaced unless it is extremely heavy.
When was the last time you had the brake *and* clutch fluid flushed and bled?
Unless it was recently -- it is due every 2 years -- I'd have that done and see if that doesn't help things.
Could be you are just getting tired of the clutch work in traffic? Even when driving my Turbo with its light (boosted) clutch action often in traffic I get kind of tired of the clutch work.
Talked it over some more with my mechanic when I picked up my car, he thinks it's just due to the 30k miles on the clutch. Guess I'll just keep driving it for now and stop worrying about it.
check the assist spring.
My clutch never felt any heavier before it went. But whenever someone else would drive my car they would comment that the pedal felt heavy until I replaced the spring.
How hard do you think the clutch pedal on my Boxster is with 272K miles on its clutch? The SM and techs who drive it tell me it is not bad. It seems bad for a while after I switch to the Boxster from my Turbo and its boosted clutch, though.
