Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As for your cars, I would assume that a later model vehicle would be running an ISO-standard CAN for the OBD-II system but I've been bitten by assuming that before (*cough* Ford proprietary 40kbps standard *cough* total B.S.
Leading evidence: 'Use "komfort" bus' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run iso-standard can' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

FWIW, Not sure what CAN is used for on my Boxster and Turbo.

The stereo died and the tech tried to resurrect it prior to condemning it and ordering a replacement under warranty and I captured this bus activity using some bus snooping hardware/software I have.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
I'm helping sorting out a project car for someone and they're having major CAN issues. The first and simplest thing I need to check is that everything is wired right, so can anyone tell me what the CAN Hi/Lo pins are on the 996.618.604.00 (I think DME 7.8?) ECU?
Also, since I don't want to buy a service manual just to help out on this project, would anyone know, off the top of their head, what devices are actually on the CAN bus in a 2004 Carrera (pretty sure the harness came from there)?
Thanks guys!
Service manual I don't think would have this info. You need wiring diagrams to look at the pins from the DME and then trace the CAN lines to wherever they go.
I've never put an OBD2 bus capture tool on an 04 Carrera but I have on an 02 Boxster, 03 Turbo and 08 Cayman S. CAN is used for the "Komfort" bus. In the case of my Cayman S for instance the radio and instrument cluster was on this bus. There could have been other things too but I didn't have the time to figure out what else.
FWIW, Not sure what CAN is used for on my Boxster and Turbo. In fact I'm not sure either even has CAN. I've never gotten that low and looked at the connector to see if the CAN pin positions are occupied.
Macster,
The wiring diagrams would be helpful, but I've read on other threads around here that asking for them is a bad idea. With a set of pin numbers, I should be able figure out the rest on my own.
The builder of the car said there isn't much on the CAN bus and it did sound like similar objects (instrument cluster, etc) but he doesn't know what is for sure, so I don't know what nodes to start checking.
As for your cars, I would assume that a later model vehicle would be running an ISO-standard CAN for the OBD-II system but I've been bitten by assuming that before (*cough* Ford proprietary 40kbps standard *cough* total B.S. *cough*).
Anyways, if anyone could dig up those pin numbers and short list of CAN devices, I'd be grateful. If not, I'll just see if a dealer will tell me.
If you do not ask you'll never hear a "yes". Sure you might hear a no too.
Unfortunately you are seeking the full set to know what all is on the CAN bus, so the odds are high you'll get a "no".
Offer to pay shop labor to have the tech print/copy these for you. I expect it would take less than an hour.
Some here have access to hard copy factory manuals. I have them - 64lbs worth -- for my Boxster. I do not have any for the MY of 911 you are asking about.
Supposedly CAN was supposed to be the OBD2 bus starting in MY 08 and I was looking forward to researching CAN related communication with my new 08 Cayman S. But I found it used ISO/KWP for its OBD2 bus.
CAN was reserved for the instrument cluster and stereo (and possibly other things as well, but I never got a chance to find out).
The stereo died and the tech tried to resurrect it prior to condemning it and ordering a replacement under warranty and I captured this bus activity using some bus snooping hardware/software I have.
But since the car didn't use CAN for OBD2 communication I sort of lost interest then the car was destroyed in an accident 4 weeks after I bought it and that was that.
Without a DME to look at and to know which chip makers reference manual to get and determine which pins are the CAN pins the only other way I can think of would be to view the wiring diagrams.
