But now I see they used the same clutch on the Boxster S from 2000 to 2004 so it can't be the engine hp.

I am guessing one was just a lot more used than the other.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am putting a 2002 transmission in my 1999 996 c2. The clutches are listed as fitting 99-01 and 02-04. (pressure plate is only part different in kit) Do I need to order a clutch for the 99 or the 02? What I have found out so far makes no sense. There are 2 different part numbers but can't find a reason for it. Flywheel is the same for both years Throw out bearing is the same Slave cylinder is the same Clutch release lever is the same clutch disc is the same If it were to have a LSD transmission, '99 and 02 would both have the same transmission, flywheel and other parts I mentioned. Only the pressure plate is different. The place I am getting the transmission from compared the 02 clutch to a 99 clutch and said it looks like the prongs on the pressure plate stick up a little higher. Otherwise no visual difference. I am guessing one was just a lot more used than the other.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No one has any ideas? What do people use when they put a 3.6l engine in an '01 or older car? I emailed Sachs about it and got this reply: After viewing both clutch kits they are identicle with the exception of the pressure plate. I don't have any technical information regarding clamp loads but I do know the '02 911 had a little bit more power so the difference could be in the clamp load. The bolt patterns appear to the same but I am only looking at pictures. The other thing to look into is the stack up height. I really can't tell you which will work best for you because we catalog our kits to OE specifications. Therefore, we don't have a lot of technical data because it is assumed we are selling OE replacements and not modified applications. This is something you will need to look at closely to determine which clutch you will need based on the things I mentioned above.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The more I search the more confused I get. The only real I could find was the extra horsepower of the 2002 engine so I was thinking the only difference was the clamping force as suggested by Sachs. But now I see they used the same clutch on the Boxster S from 2000 to 2004 so it can't be the engine hp.

POST 4Original post

The release bearing has a different part number as well. If everything else is the same, I'm thinking you'd just need to match the release bearing and pressure plate.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do you happen to have the part numbers for the two bearings?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I tried looking up the first one I get this: Part Superseded to 99611608004

POST 8Original post

I just found out, the hard way, that the pressure plate height is different between the two models. You cannot interchange them.

POST 9Original post

Some photos. Note: Last photo shows height difference (2002-up plate on left, 1999-2001 plate on right)

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Do you happen to now the reason for the difference? The only thing I can think of is the crankshaft surface compared to the bell housing being different. Does that even make sense? If that is the case I will need the clutch for the 99. If there is another reason for the height difference, I will may need the 02 clutch. I hope I need the earlier style since I just found such a good deal on it.
