Porsche recommends to replace the wheel bearings on GT3 used on track at 8500 "track miles" ...They get a lot of "side loading"...no recommendation for just street cruising...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When driving fast and taking high speed turns I can hear and feel a weird noise coming from the front. Sounds like slight thumping rhythmically. No issues when going straight.
my Independent mechanic checked the bearings and axles and all seems good. Only 45k and all stock . Any ideas would be appreciated. Not load enough to video and post .
It's probably a bad shock/strut...
I had that problem with one of the Porsche Driving School Cars that was still under Warranty....The Porsche Instructors were complaining of a noise at high speed corners that sounded like someone hitting the floorboard with a rubber hammer..
After checking it on the lift for anything loose or visibly worn, I took it on the Barber Track and sure enough, I heard the sound they were complaining about....
After taking both front struts off I could feel the difference in the two....It was obvious....Two new Struts and an alignment cured the problem...( under Warranty)...
Most likely not the issue, but the
first
simple thing to do is to make sure the wheel lug nuts are torqued to spec.
While you have the wrench out, check all four.
Yep good advice and worth a look. The 96ft lbs spec, and how you get there is also important. You never know who is going to be doing remove replace at discount tire or any corner garage. Any work at a garage can be sketchy, so if you find a good technician treat em well. And buy a torque wrench. I'm guilty of buying a cheap one off AMAZON. It tests well against my mechanics professional tool, he tested it for me. I have learned that one broad range wrench is less accurate and your supposed to use a wrench where your spec falls in the midrange of the tool. I know this is very basic and most here are well aware, but I'm a newbie.
Well I just changed my front struts and top hats and the thumping noise is even worse on long high speed right turns. I was able to take a video of it and would appreciate any help .
so far Ive put new Michelin p4s, repacked the front bearings and replaced the right front torn boot, new bilstein b6 struts and top caps .
It could also be a bad bushing in one of the control arms or sub frame that gets stressed on right turns (there are lots of em that can crack/tear after 20 or so years of driving) This is always the problem with throwing parts at a problem. At least now you know that its not the struts Also remember youre going to need an alignment when all is said and doneKeep digging, youll find it - Good Luck
my front wheel bearing had odd symptoms, some similar to what you mentioned. when the car was off the ground it didn't have any of the normal telltale signs of a failed bearing, but it basically fell apart during replacement.
This was on an 03 c4s with 68k miles too
Thank you Work_truck for your suggestion. had the wheel bearings changed yesterday and the problem is solved. I also want to thank Porschetech3 for his changing front struts suggestion, even though it was not the issue but my car handles a lot better with the Bilstein B6 struts.
Thats great to hear! glad I was able to help, I did a few things (tires, brakes, suspension) before having it professionally diagnosed because I just had a hard time believing a WB failure at that mileage.
Figured I'd add on that 3 months ago I also needed one new front wheel bearing. 2002 C4S, about 110K miles on the car. There was a fairly loud humming noise from the front left, and that was the cause. So..... do we now have to add wheel bearings to the list of common failures and maintenance needs?
Well, wheel bearings on all cars are wear items. I don't think I would call it a "common failure" though. I don't consider worn brake pads to be a "common failure" so wheel bearings aren't either. It's just maintenance.
At 70mph the front bearings spin at about 938 rpm, and do over 80 million revolutions in 100,000 miles; with no lubrication except the original grease they were packed with. So yes, definitely a maintenance need. Eventually.
Porsche recommends to replace the wheel bearings on GT3 used on track at 8500 "track miles" ...They get a lot of "side loading"...no recommendation for just street cruising...
I agree its normal maintenance, but it seems super common at low mileages on these cars (based only on my cursory research)
even 100k miles for wheel bearings seems wild to me
until you realize its another lever supported at only one end
where is my dual row oil fed Wheel Bearing Solution
Us Fear mongers ( inventors) are waiting for a few hundred/thousand cars to be totaled / people killed and a Class Action Law Suit, before we invest time/money on such a thing....ya know a "market" for something that cures a problem....
im on an every 2 year schedule for replacement on my car. Thats about 60 track days. That $80 rear bearing that failed cost me a $900 axle shaft
.
my peterbilt has oil bath dual row wheel bearings
And of all the things I've learned since buying my 996 and doing TONS of DIY work... learning the word "guibo" has made it all worth it.
I replaced mine when I replaced the trans mount.
My 996 is pretty loud and I was sure that the wheel bearings were going off, but my Indy checked them carefully and says they are good. But yeah they are 22 years old with 97k miles, so it's time. I'm not going to wait for them to fail. Thanks for the tip!
