I topped up my oil level after a fresh oil change wanting to get it exactly full......without my glasses on and trying to read clean oil on the dipstick and screwed up.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know this has been covered before. I read the posts. I topped up my oil level after a fresh oil change wanting to get it exactly full......without my glasses on and trying to read clean oil on the dipstick and screwed up. I added 12 oz. of oil or .375 quart. Now my oil gauge is on the top bar and oil level on the dipstick is just above full when checked cold. I know some say not to worry it will burn off but this really bothers me. It does not smoke although I haven't driven it hard since topping up. What is the best way to remove the excess oil: 1. pull the filter then reattach filter and recheck, pull again if necessary until level is correct. 2. remove the drain plug briefly if possible and put back in. 3. use a topsider or drill pump tube down the dipstick. I would be using a local shop with a lift that is not a Porsche guy but would be able to do this better than I. I do not have a new crush washer or oil filter o ring. I would have to reuse each for 1 and 2 above. Big question, If I try 2 above can I back out the plug just enough to get a trickle going without the deluge with the plug out? 02 Carrera Cab. All thoughts would be appreciated. I'm doing this tomorrow. Thanks

POST 2Original post

That's not a lot of extra oil .375 of a quart. If the dash gauge says full but not over the full mark !! When engine is cold!!. Your full, not over full. At least that's how I would diagnose my cars oil level. I've done my research on this but am no expert

POST 3Original post

I did this yesterday. Get about 5 feet of 1/4 inch plastic tubing, a mason jar and a shop vac. Drill two 1/4 inch holes in the lid of the mason jar. Put the tubing into one of the holes. Put the other end of the tube down in the dipstick tube. Put shop vac hose over other hole. Turn on shop vac and get comfortable. Took about 15 minutes to remove a half quart. But. No mess or worries about washers etc.

POST 4Original post

I had done the same thing about 3 months ago. What bothered me the most was my oil pressure gauge would not go below the 3 bar mark on idle, which it used to be on 2. So what I did was take a large hand pump kind of like the ones on liquid soap but on steroids attached it to a 1/4 plastic tubing about 5ft long just like DTMiller said and hand pumped the sucker out.

POST 5Original post

Pull the filter housing. It is much easier to control then the drain plug. There is only ~1/2 qt of oil in it.

POST 7Original post

A one time overfill with just a fraction of a quart over the full mark is not really that bad. While I do not like overfilling with the dipstick you know by how much the overfill is. If your car engine uses a bit of oil as you drive the car you could just leave it and make a note, or two, to never ever overfill again. However, if you want to remove some oil you can unscrew and remove the oil filter housing and pour out the oil. This removes approx. 0.25 quart (maybe skosh more depending upon how long you let the filter element drain) then carefully install the filter element and install the housing. Be sure you keep the filter element and housing clean! Do not lay the element or housing in the dirt or even in a dirty drain pan. If you want to put a scar on your psyche to help you remember to be more careful in the future replace the filter element and o-ring with new ones and let this be a real lesson to you.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took DT Miller's advice and used his method to remove the oil and as 996pp said "pumped the sucker out". It took me quite a while drip by drip but considered that as my penance for not being more observant. I can tell you all this (Macster). This will NEVER happen again. Thanks everyone for your responses. Enjoy your cars!

POST 9Original post

Yeah, my method certainly requires a comfortable chair. But it works and you don't have to jack up the car or need the filter removal tool if you don't already have one.

POST 10Original post

They do make a vacuum removal tool. You pump a vacuum by hand with what looks like a bike pump on a gas can, and when you open the valve, you can meter the amount of oil. It's called a Topsider.

POST 11Original post

Yeah but when you do it by hand you will make sure that you don't make the same mistake twice
