Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The engine compartment fan in 996 Carreras runs very infrequently(assuming the sensor is installed correctly).
Leading evidence: 'Install correctly)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check temp sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Check the temp sensor for your fan(located near passenger side of intake manifold).

In fact I'll often hear it running for 10-15 minutes after I come home while it cools the car off even with the ignition off.

So far I have not heard them run after ignition off on my '01 C4 (owned for 2 months), nor on my '06 Cayman S (owned for years).

The front radiator fans used to run after the engine was shut off on all three of the 944s I owned in the past.

Even on less than blazing hot days town driving, like running various errands when the places are too far apart or I do not have the time to walk, in both cars I hear the engine compartment fan come on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not necessarily true. In the summer mine runs in traffic and every night when I pull into the garage. In fact I'll often hear it running for 10-15 minutes after I come home while it cools the car off even with the ignition off.
Interesting, my fans (ones on the front or the one over the engine) have never stayed on after I turned off the ignition, even in the hottest of summer temperatures around here.
Check the temp sensor for your fan(located near passenger side of intake manifold). I'd be willing to bet it has fallen out of it's holder and is hanging down closer to the engine. This causes it to read hotter than it should and kick the fan on more often than it otherwise is designed to run.
My 2000 C2's engine compartment fan does not run even on the hottest of summer days.
I will look for that sensor on my car... I'll often park in the garage after driving on a hot day, fan not running when I go inside, but sometimes will hear the fan running if I go back into the garage in a few minutes. I always assumed it was heat soak and fairly common. No?
Mine hardly ever comes on, but I noticed it was on the other day when the temp was in the mid 90s, so it's working, just not needed often. Never had any fan run after the ignition is turned off.
This was common with my Boxster when I would park it hot in the garage and leave the car unlocked.
When the car is locked the fan does not come on.
Now the Turbo engine compartment fan comes on even if the car is locked.
I'd be more concerned that there is something with your car's fan or temp sensor that keeps the fan from being triggered. Even on less than blazing hot days town driving, like running various errands when the places are too far apart or I do not have the time to walk, in both cars I hear the engine compartment fan come on.

Mine has only come on once that I've heard. I do have a box fan in the garage (to cool the dog, not the car
) so that may dissipate heat.
I had another car that had an electric fan--can't remember what it was. RX-7, maybe? It came on ALL the time so the 996 really didn't surprise me when it came on.

Mine is properly installed and onyone time I recall it on and was shocked. Heavy stop & go onthe interstate when there was a hue accident delay on alike 100 degree summer day. . I THOUGHt it did all the time, but that was the injection fan. I've checked it with the Enhanced Porsche Autoenginuity, and it works as it should. Not once ever in the garage.
This is serious deja vu... You insist on posting on these engine fan threads trying to compare your Boxster(986) and 996 TT to our 996 Carreras. These are different cars with different specs, engine layouts, etc. The engine compartment fan in 996 Carreras runs very infrequently(assuming the sensor is installed correctly).
