Had to take everything back apart today to adjust the switch, but working perfectly now.

Suggestion
For those upgrading to a short shift, It's popular to use the housing as a donor for the B&M (or knock-off) short shift kit, rather than damaging the stock housing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone,
Just installed a stock 997 shifter I bought from Suncoast for $250. Was a very easy installation, probably took me about 1.5 hours. Followed the instructions for the B&M shifter installation for how to take everything apart. Shifts are much smoother now, and have a great feel.
Had a minor issue after installation, when locking my car the horn would sound indicating an open door/latch. Turns out I didn't install the armrest storage console switch correctly, so take care with that if you're doing the swap. Had to take everything back apart today to adjust the switch, but working perfectly now.
Not sure what to do with my old 996 shifter, had 79k miles on it. Free if you can pickup in Los Angeles, or just pay for shipping and its yours. Otherwise I'll probably just toss it.
Thanks,
Chris

I sold my old 996 shifter on ebay for like $30 plus shipping. For those upgrading to a short shift, It's popular to use the housing as a donor for the B&M (or knock-off) short shift kit, rather than damaging the stock housing. That way, the owner can go back to stock if needed.
BTW, I bought a used 997 Shifter for less than that, so I made a few bucks on the deal
I like mine. It's slightly shorter, and slightly smoother than the 996 stock shifter.
But don't expect a radical change. I would categorize it as a minor incremental improvement. I picked my 997 shifter up on ebay for $25, so it was worth it for me. Perhaps that's an unusual deal, but I would say you might be able to find one for under $100 if you are patient.
I just installed a 997 SSK last Tuesday. Much easier than I though. I have a Stock 997 Shifter with Alignment Tool for sale that came out. $150 Shipped PM me

Just finished installing a 997 shifter. Took it for a test drive and like it so far. The 996 shifter was sloppy, of course it had 70k miles on it.
One thing I noticed was that the rubber on the end of one of the shifter cable couplings was decomposing. Bits of rubber were all over the old shifter. The newer Porsche shift cable coupling ends seem to be made of hard plastic. I put it back together as it but wonder if at some point it will become an issue. The cable snapped securely onto the bottom of the shifter nonetheless, even given the decomposing rubber. Anyone else seen this?
on this topic, I have tried 3 set ups on my car
- stock 996 = way too sloppy, long throws
- B&M SSK = good throws but too notchy for my taste
- stock 997 = feel both tight and smooth, still a bit long throws but best compromise in my opinion
I have seen some gearbox side SSK for the 996, has anyone tried it?
