Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fellow Rennlisters - I've been loving my C4S and have become a Porsche addict. It's my mistress, not sure my wife is all too pleased.. I was recently on Rennsport Forum and the tech their had this message to another new Porsche 996 owner: Regarding your "new" 996,...... 1) Use Total or Motul 5w-40 oil,..do NOT use the Mobil 1 0w-40 crap. Change it every 3K. 2) Use German OEM oil filters and open them up at every oil change to inspect their innards. Never overlook this one! 3) Consider proactively replacing the IMS bearing with the LN Engineering kit. This can save the $20K engine. These three measures will help your experience be a good one. Good initial info to newbie for sure. But my main question is about the oil. Agree with #1? wanted to get a tally and idea of best oil you all are using. thanks!

POST 2Original post

Pick a high quality full synthetic oil in the proper viscosity (0W40, 5W40 or 5W50). Use a quality Porsche oil filter. Change it every 5,000 miles or at least yearly. Do Blackstone used oil analysis if you like that sort of thing. And don't worry. Motul, Joe Gibbs, Mobil 5W40 TD or 5W50, would all be good places to start.

POST 3Original post

Oh, dear. An oil thread. My indie said to use TOTAL Quartz Energy 9000 5W40, so I use it. I cannot defend my position further. Changing 9 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles seems excessive unless you tend to drive for long periods @ 6,000 RPM, in which case you'll want to change your hearing aid batteries every 3K miles as well. Good luck, and God save this oil thread.

POST 5Original post

I have had many Porsche and I presently use Mobil 1. I have found that if I go over the recommended 3K miles my car begins to run odd . It seems to labor or just feel heavy . I do use Motul on the tranny, but since Mobil 1 has served my engine well for so many years, I think that I will stick with it

ONE CONSTANT in every forum I have been a member of (trucks, motorcycles, MINI, BMW, Porsche and even scooters, etc.).............. a bazillion oil threads

POST 10Original post

Someone please start an oil poll that includes all the popular choices?

POST 13Original post

where do you live? Porsche and the porsche approved shops in the area i live in, SoCal and Los Angeles recommend Mobil 1 0W40, that's what I run...

POST 14Original post

Be nice if there was some way to read through all those other oil threads. Kinda like a search function or something. What I hate most about oil changes is making sure I have the right supplies. The unicorn tears and dried mastodon ********* aren't that hard to come by, but you just can't get good eye of newt any more.

POST 16Original post

lol I think a simple poll as a sticky would reduce oil threads...as mentioned. List the top 5 or 10 oil choices and let the poll speak for itself.

POST 17Original post

Not to fan the flames of opinion-hell; but for those reacting to the more recent negative comments against the Mobil 1 product family - it is probably rooted in the formulation changes a little while back where more of the Zinc (ZDDP) was remove from the mix due to (I believe) EPA and Marketing pressures. I'm not for advocating a magic oil bullet in terms of brand - simply because the formulas change over time. For the initial startup of a newly rebuilt motor is it worth it to spend a few extra bucks on a high ZDDP oil (read: Break In Oil)? Well for me I decided it really couldn't hurt so I went for it. I will drain it in 1k miles and switch to a 0w40 with as much ZDDP as I can find at not ridiculous cost. I can't prove it did anything except make me feel better about having covered all the bases. So I got value from it. To my limited understanding the Zinc is the last chain of defense in providing protection from metal to metal contact when the oil integrity has broken down. So I might as well go for the formulations that were as close in ZDDP levels to what was available in 2002 as that's what things were designed for. Granted I'm sure far more damage happens because of the Ethanol in our fuel than happens from changes in the ZDDP content of our oil... I just can't find pure-gas in 93octane without driving a few hundred miles.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 11402875

JG DT40 had higher zinc levels in the oil at 2300 miles/3 track days then either M1 15-50 or Castrol 10-60 ($$ BMW stuff) with a thousand miles/1 track day on each according to my Blackstone OAs. I was surprised since M1 15-50W is advertised as a high zinc level based racing oil. DT40 has the highest flashpoint of those 3 as well.

Great concept on paper at least......... BUT: * must be READ first and foremost * then reader is convinced he is armed with enough info to make own decision(s) But sadly more often than not, skip the time and effort needed to read a POLL since its much easier to just start a new thread and have members do the work. IOW, I predict a hundred more oil threads in the future...with IMSB threads a close second

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 11404671

I'd have to disagree and say the cylinder scoring is gonna eclipse the IMS posts soon. Canucks are in trouble...

POST 24Original post

I'll second the >3,000 mi. issue. I changed my oil at 67k, intending to take it 5,000 mi. At just over 70k my water pump failed. Proof positive. TC

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 11405545

Yes, AA717driver. I think the factory interval calls for a longer mileage oil change on the P-Car, but I regularly change mine at 5,000 miles or once a year. Now as far as the "other cars" in our motor pool, my wifes Infinity and our Land Rover they get changed at 7,500 miles or sometimes even more, lol.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, all, for the replies. And sorry to those that suffered through another oil thread Always interesting to hear what folks are thinking out there. Forum is great!

POST 27Original post

Rallydog, I agree with you but if your really in Houston I would use 5W-40 JG DT40 for max ZDDP and insurance against CEF.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 11414776

If you're in houston Rallydog, I would just make the drive over to KK's to pickup and recycle his old 500 mi OCI JG-DT40 he has barrels of.

POST 29Original post

Hah Alpy, your too late. I just brought about 20 gallons of used oil to the City recycle tanks. Some of it actually looked pretty clean as I poured it from the 5 gallon containers into the big tank. But;;;; it wasnt all JG oil. Lots of trans oil, fluid, transfer case, diff, etc. from having too many darn vehicles. PS, you changed your avatar?

POST 30Original post

Motul 5W40, Mahle or Mann filters. Cut them open every time. Change every 10,000 kilometres or less - never more. (That's 6000 miles or so - makes it easy to tell when I need an oil change. Engine was changed after 40,000 miles with big bearing motor - so no LNS for me. Then again I have yet to see proof that big IMS bearings fail. The car has 210,000 kilometres, with 140,000 on the new engine, 70,000 of which are my kilometres - all on Motul.

POST 32Original post

I don't believe that I have personally posted in a 996 oil thread, so I feel shamed. Let me rectify that now. I use Total 5w-40, and change it every 3,000 miles. I don't cut my filters, but I have an LNS IMS bearing. Anybody who says to do differently is wrong.

POST 33Original post

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I've always used Motul 5W40 on my cars (Toyota MR2 / BMW M3) and currently the 996 paired with a Mann or Mahle filter (with the exception of the MR2.) I do the same as Jasper where I cut the filter. Mind you, I've only owned the 996 for several months and it has an IMS upgrade that was done by the previous owner. The results with Motul 5W40 has been excellent so far.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 11402954

JG Driven DT40 is a really good oil due to having high levels of Zinc in it that these cars need and other oils do not have. I run DT50 in my 930 and I'm happy with it so far. I have it CLICK HERE and you can use RENNLIST at checkout to get 10% off. I just sold a case today to a customer with a 2002 996. -Jason

POST 41Original post

I've used castrol 0w40 and 5w40, mobil 1 and I'm going to use penzoil ultra 5w40 next. I change every 4 to 5k miles and check the filter each time. I'm using 5w40 now based on the oil and engine gurus recommendation. 0w40 in the winter if I'm in the mountains at -20f.

POST 42Original post

This question is like asking if we should have tougher gun control law. I went from Mobil 1 to synthetic blend every 5k miles. 100% synthetic is overrated. Heck I might just go to regular just to prove a point.

I use Rotella T6 5w40 in all of my cars and change it every 7500 miles. It has 1200ppm zinc and 1100ppm phosphorous. If it can handle the heat and abuse of a turbo diesel engine, it's fine for my cars.
