Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In addition, looking at LN Engineering site, they specify that any rebuild from 2005 on used the M97 IMS bearing which is "not serviceable"...
Leading evidence: 'Use m97 ims bearing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace " situation' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Once you change out the case, you in a "replace" situation.

Called the shop that did the motor rebuild/swap and they stated they only use "OEM Porsche IMS bearings" when they rebuild.

I know the IMS thing has been beat to death, but I can't find any reference/discussion of rebuilt using factory/oem IMS vs LN kits...

If the car is pre-06, and was rebuilt using the original cases, it would have the externally replaceable bearing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all!
Looking at a potential candidate for my daily driver/commuter 996. Chassis has high miles, but motor was rebuilt (after previous original IMS failure) and now car has ~45k miles on rebuilt motor. Called the shop that did the motor rebuild/swap and they stated they only use "OEM Porsche IMS bearings" when they rebuild. Shop owner made it pretty clear it doesn't have the LN is retrofit/IMS solution...
I was all jazzed up about this car, but now I'm a little worried about the "OEM Porsche IMS" that was installed. I know the IMS thing has been beat to death, but I can't find any reference/discussion of rebuilt using factory/oem IMS vs LN kits...
thanks in advance,

now I'm more confused....

You need to figure out the engine # ask the guy selling it, this will tell you if its an m97 with the bigger bearing that can't be swapped out without splitting the cases.
If its an m96 motor, the next question out of my mouth to this guy would be "what do you define as a rebuild?" and who did it?
Yes the IMS is important and I have a ceramic dual row LN bearing in my car, however there are many other things you got to look out for with these engines.
If it's the original engine that was rebuilt, it has the smaller bearing. With 45k miles on an unknown bearing, just change it. If you don't, you'll be spooked at every rattle and thump, and you'll never really enjoy the car.
We've made a page on the IMS Retrofit site that covers this topic in depth:
http://imsretrofit.com/my06-08/
The bearing cannot be changed without disassembling the engine, however, removing the grease seal is the best thing to do as part of preventative maintenance to ensure the IMS bearing has a good long service life.
That said, the 06-08 cars have a very low likelihood of having an IMS failure.
I think Chris(MA) hit it on the head...define "rebuild". "If" they truly used a Porsche short block or factory rebuild block, then I would assume it has the larger bearing Charles is referring to. I suggest, this is unlikely, and they likely "rebuilt" the existing engine, which would mean it has whatever bearing would have been used for the year of the car (with some bearings apparently crossing over during phasing in of different bearing designs). If the car is pre-06, and was rebuilt using the original cases, it would have the externally replaceable bearing. The experts around here can sort the difference from the engine serial number, so post that to be sure.
IMHO "Rebuild" implies that the original case was reused. Once you change out the case, you in a "replace" situation.
I realize this is semantics, but given the word "rebuild" I would say it is most likely that the bearing is the smaller one.
