Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Replacing the key costs that much but a re-programming fee is usually one half hour or one hour's labor at the dealer.
Leading evidence: 'Replace key costs' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace key costs' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wanted to perform a quick price check.
Both of my keys went dead. This is not related to dead batteries (the red light still flashes). There seems to be no connection anymore between the remote and the car.
Tried flipping the batteries upside down and forcing the key into reprogramming, but had no success. The dealer wants 270$ a pop for replacement. For those of you that have had this issue, does this sound like normal pricing ?
Thanks !
there is a fairly recent thread on this, but mine did the same recently - lights were on but no-one in. Dealer had to re-program the key/car which included databases, codes and plugging into the ECU. Took about half an hour I guess.
I am still in warranty so no charge, but figure under an hours work.
Dealer did tell me that it was fairly common for 996 keys to just "forget" how to talk to the car.
Think I would punch the dealer in the face if it happened to me. I lost my key 2 weeks ago and retraced my steps to the garage about 700m away. Phew, did not realise they shaft you for that much.
Here is a 2 button Key head with the tag on ebay. There was a lady on there a while back with a bunch of 996 2 button key heads I think I paid $150 for 2. It's safe to buy these ob ebay as long as they come with the original configuration tag. Your dealer will charge you $10-$25 for the blade and another $100+/- for programming.
Well, if I was the only one that had a key that could possibly work with all of our cars, and NOTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD would start them, I would charge you $1000!!!!
Aftermarket keys, what a novell idea.
Yves,
I ordered a cut key shaft from Sunset for about $70. Sounds, however, like you need key heads, not shafts. I paid $50 for a key head (with necessary bar code tag) on Ebay. They are more at the dealer .... but not $270 if all you need is the head (electronic portion).
Took the whole mess to Hennessy, and they charged me $47 total to mate two keys to the car while I waited.
