It was the PO, I only know about it because it was on the carfax and I can see where the tech scratched the sheet metal to mark placement for the feet of the regulator.

Reading online, this points to the window regulator itself and not the microswitches but this window regulator was replaced by a Porsche dealer less than 5 years ago.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First off, I have read through both the very long window drop failure threads, and I still have some unanswered questions for a real expert. The situation: Driver door, when I pull the handle the window drops but not enough. The window does not rise again until the door is closed. I can manually lower the window before closing the door, and then when I close the door the window raises itself to the proper position. Reading online, this points to the window regulator itself and not the microswitches but this window regulator was replaced by a Porsche dealer less than 5 years ago. I can verify that the work was done because I can see where he scratched into the sheet metal to mark where to place the feet of the regulator, and it's an OEM part. I find it unlikely that an OEM regulator went bad in such a short period of time. Is there anybody out there that can suggest to me something else I can try before replacing the window regulator? As an aside, one of the wiring harnesses supposed to be in my door (996 632 121 02) was completely missing from my door assembly. Pretty sure this is unrelated and just powers the cockpit light, but maybe relevant. Anyway, just mostly venting I guess before I buy another window regulator that is gonna break in a couple years.

POST 2Original post

I assume you have already tried to re-train the 'home position' of the window, by holding the window switch in the up position for 15 seconds with door closed. As annoying as it sounds, it very much could be another failed window regulator. Depending on how frequently they are used I could see one failing sooner than normal. Certainly difficult to diagnose without just throwing parts at it.

POST 3Original post

it sounds like the regulator has some slack in it. there is a provision for taking the slack out of the cable

POST 4Original post

I would take the door card off and observe the operation of the regulator. Probably some slack in the regulator cables. Remember, if you unplug the airbag and turn the ignition on, you will get an airbag light and you will need Durametric to turn the airbag light off.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you guys. I have done this and tried with the zip tie but no luck so far. The zip tie was actually already there when I inspected, but maybe I need to finagle with it a little bit.

POST 6Original post

So you had a new regulator installed less than 5 years ago and it had a zip tie on it? Why? That doesn't make much sense. But it does sound like you need a new regulator. Only Porsche OE window regulator. No el cheapo aftermarket regulator.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was the PO, I only know about it because it was on the carfax and I can see where the tech scratched the sheet metal to mark placement for the feet of the regulator. It is an OEM part. Installed by Porsche Scottsdale in 2017. Unless, the dealership fixed the regulator with the zip tie and charged the owner for a new regulator, and then falsely put on the carfax that it was replaced. Which is certainly a possibility.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh. I think we are talking about two different zip ties. I will try the other zip tie. a la https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...op-my-fix.html

POST 9Original post

They are called "stealerships" for a reason. And you are probably right, fixed with a zip tie and not replaced. Question - I've had to replace the window regulator, replaced with a new Porsche OE regulator, so why would you not do that? I've heard the zip tie only lasts so long, then you will be back at it again. Fact, they are not cheap but probably will last another 20 years.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah it sounds like any tensioner on the cable will only cause it to stretch more eventually. I will end up replacing it but I wanted to make sure the problem was in the regulator itself and not any of the switches or locking mechanisms.

POST 11Original post

I have found a really good test to see if your regulator is worn without removing any parts is to simply grab the window with both hands and pull up and down. If it moves a little bit you for sure have a worn regulator. Brand new regulator will not move even a mm.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After a bit more research, and the comments here, everything points to a failing regulator. So i've got one on order now. As an additional aside I may have uncovered what caused an OEM regulator to fail prematurely. When I removed the door card, it was jammed in there exceptionally tight. That, and old dirty guides are probably putting a lot of drag on the window and regulator. When install the new one, I will make sure to make sure everything is cleaned and lubed up so that I'm not doing this again in 5 years. If anyone has tips for additional cleaning/lubing that would be great too.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

By the way, Pelican and ECS tuning both told me that the wiring harness I need 996-632-121-02-OEM is currently unavailable. If anyone has got a lead on one (pun intended), please let me know.

Yes sir! Thank you. I will try Delaware next if Atlanta can't get their hands on one either. ECS and Pelican showed as available and then had to cancel the orders.
