Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I thought you were supposed to replace the IMSB with every oil change?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought the car with 56k miles two years ago, and have been enjoying it as a daily driver. Truly one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. And thanks to the indie shop I take it to, a very reasonable overall cost of ownership. Original clutch and IMS still going strong.
I just hit 74k original miles in my car, i bought it with 69 but it needed a clutch replacement and I did the AOS along with it, IMS still original as per last owner
Original IMS in both my Boxster @ 72k and my 996 Targa @ 92k
I probably will do the IMS upgrade when I do the clutch in the Boxster. The 996 is a TIP, so unless I start seeing problem, unlikely I will do a change
I don't lose sleep over it.
learned lots of things
Need to change the drain plug crush washer every other day, you can refinish it and reuse the $.96 part if you like
$300 oil changes get you free coffee
its really easy to add 50+ HP to a M96 engine
you can get a replacement IMS bearing for around $25 and DIY
Use any oil but M1, it will destroy the engine
WD-40 fixes everything
the 996 and 986 are ticking time bombs
you need to detail the engine and drive it no more than 100 miles per year or something will beak
Johnny I is my hero
Need to invest in an Electron microscope to make sure there are no little bits of metal in the oil filter
Between 1% and 99% of all M96 engines will grenade
There are 496 modes of failure known to one person
The 997 is better than the 996, wait 996 is better than the 997, no 997 is better, no 996 is better, screw it, go buy a BMW
Its easy to sleep after 3 fingers of single malt, no worries
This is preciously why you need to be very careful about what you read on the net. The rule is actually every fill-up. It may seem like over-kill, but you will sleep better at night.
