Most of the posts that I've seen on this topic are related to failures with the electric actuator, but I'm looking for confirmation on how to replace the cable itself.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I've tried searching but wasn't able to find anything definitive for this question. The cable connecting the lever in the cabin to the rear deck lid latch appears to be broken. As a result, the engine cover no longer actually latches, but the lid stays closed on its own. It's possible that a previous owner modified the latch so that doesn't lock you out, but either way, anyone can walk up to the rear deck and pull it open, so this is an issue that I would like to repair. The car is a 1999, which means that it does not have the electric release button in the cabin, but the lever that pulls the cable and actuates the latch manually. Most of the posts that I've seen on this topic are related to failures with the electric actuator, but I'm looking for confirmation on how to replace the cable itself. This post, from the 964 forum , was the closest that I found. For that one, it looks like there is a tube that retains the cable and runs from the latch to the handle. Anyone know how this is assembled for the 996? It looks like I'm looking for part number 99651201700. Has anyone else encountered this issue before? Thank you in advance!

I just had my hands in a fairly stripped 99 car. The cable goes through the electrical grommet on the drivers side. Its tucked behind the rear seatbelt. I assume u will have to strip a fair amount of the interior. Swaping the cable is fairly simple but getting to it may be a challange.

I was afraid of that. Thank you.
