After purchasing it I ran it through the mechanic and found out the car needed the Lca and ball joints needed replacing, replaced the tie rod ends, did a full 90k maintence service on it (bought it with 82k) and the cam covers needed to be resealed.

The car just just a used car so give the car a thorough used car check out, or take it to your trusted Porsche shop and have someone there check the car over for you.

Suggestion
Should be very easy as I am certain there are several guys here on Rennlist in Tampa and at least one would go check the car out for you.

One must always pay particular attention to the Tip during a test drive and ideally one would want to see that Tip has received periodic fluid/filter servicing if the car's mileage is up there.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
Like the title says, I came across a 2001 C2 tiptronic coupe with 130k on it. I'm really interested in this particular car. A key reason of interest is that my wife and son can drive the tiptronic, as they aren't able to drive my 997 6 speed targa 4s.
I came across a few threads last night about users buying P-cars without PPI's, etc.. this would be my case. The car is in Tampa and I am in Jersey. I am aware of the milage and age. But something inside of me is pushing me to go forward and buy it. Am I crazy? (yes, please answer this)
What should I look at when the car arrives to me? I am extremely **** about all of my automobiles; my daily A5 is meticulous and no one can tell it has 94k on it. What preventive maintenance should I get done when I get it? Anything that I should look at in particular at 130k?
Thanks!
I'm assuming it's a great price? Tip and high mileage really lowers the market pool, so you should be able to get this car for a steal.
Look for all the usual stuff: oil leaks, signs of abuse, funny noises, etc. It's not too hard to arrange for a PPI at a mechanic that is local to the car. I'm sure someone here can recommend a mechanic. Also, people here are pretty helpful, and maybe someone in Tampa would be willing to take a look.
Do you have any maintenance records at all? If not, I'd promptly change all fluids. There rest, well, sky's the limit depending on your budget and worry level: water pump, fuel pump, oil separator, hoses, IMSB, etc.
Thanks!
Yep, the asking was $16.5k but I left a deposit for $15.5k shipped from Tampa.
I know it won't be comparable to my 997 but i'm not expecting a showroom car, definitely fluids, most likely plugs and coils for starters.
Any tips about the tiptronic gearbox? Ive never driven or owned an automatic 911. I assume more likely than not that it won't be a traditional automatic gearbox setup. From the research I've done they are built well and some owners say they haven't needed any maintenance (some owners changed the fluid and filter at 100k).
Ppi is less than 200$ why wouldn't you get one for piece of mind. 16k is still 16k and I'd rather spend it on something with issues already addressed or at least made aware of potential issues.
I can somewhat relate. The 996 was almost a 4hr round trip and due to my hectic work schedule I really only had that day to look at it and make the decision. Long story short I picked up my 00 w/o a PPI prior...some what of an impulse buy and I believed compared to the market I was getting a good deal.
Did the best of my ability (which was hardly much due diligence) to overlook everything with it.
After purchasing it I ran it through the mechanic and found out the car needed the Lca and ball joints needed replacing, replaced the tie rod ends, did a full 90k maintence service on it (bought it with 82k) and the cam covers needed to be resealed.
In the end I still like my decision but I did this prior to coming onto this forum and becoming scared to no end about my motor blowing up on me hahaha.
..... QUOTE :- I am extremely **** about all of my automobiles; There is a contradiction to the extremes, if ever I heard one. To even consider buying something unseen is irresponsible on your part. I would not feel happy with you 'watching my back' as the saying goes. Crazy???????????... duh YEEEEEES.. That something inside of you pushing you is known as 'the gambling bug'. A $15500 Gamble. Not a good bet under these circumstances. NO PPI? Not a good gamble. Quote:- Anything that I should look at in particular at 130k? I suggest a Psychiatrist LOL.
Nice! That's along the lines of what I'm expecting...regardless of PPI I would do any and all preventive maintenance. I mean, what could the PPI reveal that would deter me from buying it? Unless the motors dead because of the good 'ol IMS spiel out friends in Stuttgart graced us with I think I would go for it.
I'm familiar with Porsche maintenance but not at all familiar with the tiptronic, which is where my concern lies. Autotragic transmissions are less than pleasing to me but would be nice to add next to the 997 as an alternative.
I honestly don't think $15500 is a fair market price on a mk1 C2 tip with 130k. To me it's at least $2500 high in fact. I would keep looking. For $15500 I bet you could find a mk1 tip car with under 100K miles on it.
With pics of the car I would want to see the drivers left seat bolster. is it worn out? See tread face of all 4 tires do they appear to be worn evenly? pics of motor top and underneath, would you eat off it? door gaps, inside Frunk pics. Front under chin of bumper cover has it been beat to hell 1500 bones for a new one. haven't priced the under belly pans.
Haha touche my friend. I agree with you and I wouldn't trust myself watching your back! Could end up losing it and we wouldn't want that now, would we.
This is going to be a tough one......
Thanks for that!
Now I have a checklist of things to look into...
I have my original 997 targa 4s wheels I would put on the car, they barely have 1,000 miles on them. But as for everything else I would need to do an extensive examination to say the very least.
If you can't check the car out yourself you need to find someone close by the car that can.
Otherwise, you are taking a real gamble buying the car essentially sight unseen.
What should you look for? Everything. The car just just a used car so give the car a thorough used car check out, or take it to your trusted Porsche shop and have someone there check the car over for you.
Unless you know the services are up to date budget for a full round of services which can include: oil/filter; intake air filter; cabin air filter; brake fluid flush/bleed; Tip fluid/filter service; spark plugs and maybe coils; coolant drain and refill; tires and possibly alignment; brakes; and anything the tech uncovers, like a water pump leak or cracked CV boots.
If you want to install an aftermarket IMSB upgrade you'd have this done at this time, too.
What's that old adage, "if it's too good to be true..."
There is another thread here about a SHOP who purchased a highly publicized 997 anticipating a car that was well sorted out.
Look what happened:
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...gt3-owner.html
Please just spend the extra $200 and get it checked out for piece of mind.
You need to at least do a Rennfax. That's where a Rennlister in the Tampa area goes to look at the car for you. Should be very easy as I am certain there are several guys here on Rennlist in Tampa and at least one would go check the car out for you.
Just post a new thread titled: Can Someone in Tampa please go check out a car for me
I'll be you'll have a volunteer within a day or so and a good "eyes on" report right afterward.
Afrothunder:
Just google search for Porsche mechanics tampa fl. Worst case, you could have the local dealer do a PPI. (of course, the local dealer will try and convince you to purchase one of their cars - but if they do the PPI - it will be "accurate". I'm also certain that you can find an indie 911 expert in the Tampa area.
If it was me, that's what I'd do.
I suggest you have a look at autotempest.com.... be sure to follow the link to search craigslist as well which is where I found mine.
for example, here's a C4 cab with only 96k for the same price....

I have a TIP in my car and love it. It should be perfect for your wife and kid. They seem to be pretty trouble free but maybe if you race the car they would be problematic. I was told cars with tips have less IMS problems but I cant see why that would be true. In any case if you get a car with a tip I think you don't have to worry about the trans.
One theory why Tip cars are less prone to manifesting IMSB problems is the Tip reduces shock to the engine. The engine, and in this case specifically the IMSB, is not exposed to the higher loads that can arise with a manual transmission equipped car.
While the Tip transmission is quite robust it is not 100% worry free.
One must always pay particular attention to the Tip during a test drive and ideally one would want to see that Tip has received periodic fluid/filter servicing if the car's mileage is up there.
IIRC the Tip fluid service interval is 90K miles and were I interested in a used car with a Tip (or a manual) I'd like to see a fluid service done before 90K miles. One done just prior to putting the car on the market would be a bit of a red flag to me.
