Suggestion
The 4660NEX doesn't have speed sensitive volume control so all that and the reverse wilres will do is enable the babysitters that will tell you not to adjust the settings while you're moving.

The previous owner had wired up something custom so there was some extra stuff back there that I wasn't sure what to do with (wires running toward the frunk.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all. I'm getting ready to upgrade my PCCM 1.0 into the 21st century. For those who are interested I have a Pioneer 4500NEX that I will be installing. My question is what other things should I tackle while I have the console dissembled. I'm thinking
1) Clean up the foam from the diverter
2) Do the garage door mod
Is there anything else? Is anybody using a dashcam and if so what brand and do you like it?
Also have a couple of questions regarding the stereo instal
1) Where are you guys putting your GPS receiver (haven't seen any specific mention of this)
2) Best placement for the microphone (I've read a bunch of threads and this is all over the place)
Thanks
P
I just installed a 4660NEX a month ago. I did not see the diverter when I was in there but I wasn't looking for it. Maybe I should have.
I followed a guy's advice on Reddit and installed the GPS antenna just forward of the left windshield wiper. I ran the cable through a 1.5" rubber grommet in the firewall. You will save yourself a lot of time if you don't take the grommet out. I did and it took me at least half an hour to get the little bastard back in!
You're right about the microphone. For every location half the people say it sucks and half say it's fine. I insisted on installing mine in the factory location on the left side of the dash. I had to take the dashboard out to do it and I put a dent in the leather when I was putting it back in
. I think it can be fixed with a heat gun. The sound isn't great but the mic is hidden.
Thanks for the tip on the GPS. To be clear is this on the cowling under the hood on the drivers (left) side? Does the hood interfere with reception?
How are your liking your 4660?
M
You can actually get it close enough to the windshield where it's not under the hood. I like the features of the stereo and the wireless carplay is really cool. I don't like that it has no volume ****. Changing the volume takes too much attention off the road IMHO. I think these units assume you have steering wheel controls. I also don't like that the use a USB-C connector. It makes it hard to connect it to an aftermarket flush mount connector for example.
Also - If you have the DSP with the stock amp, make sure all the lights on the DSP are off when you stuff it away. On mine, Siri, voicemails and phone calls sounded like they were in a large box. It took me two weeks to figure out but I finally unwrapped the DSP and found that two of the settings were still on. I turned them off and it fixed the issue.
Can you use siri or google to adjust the volume via the voice command (I do this all the time in the shower
)?
Mine has two USB A ports. I just got a flush mount. Had forgotten about that.
I retrofitted a GPS unit to my VW Golf and I just shoved the 3$ GPS antenna behind the dash all ***** nilly. Works fine and it's not directly under the windshield either.
Last time I had my console apart I installed a short throw shifter and vacuumed the 20 years worth of crud under it
Yes, I got this for my Sirius XM antenna and it works great. It works perfectly under the plastic between the hood and windshield and is easy to install. Rod at CAI has a ton of experience putting audio in these cars manufactures custom antenna and speaker mounts.
I no longer need mine (using app through Apple CarPlay, not dedicated antenna) so if anyone is interested, DM me.
Did it. no problem with the gps placement. If you don't have heated seats, look into putting usb plugs where the heated seat switches would be on the batwing. works great, looks oem, no dangling wires.
Sort of. From what I remember, "hey siri" doesn't work in the car even if you have it enabled on the phone. You still need to hit the microphone button on the stereo to let you talk to Siri (or Google).
Hey did any of you tap into the reverse cable or the speed sensor? If so where did you splice the wire. Im pretty sure the harness for my pcm1.0 has that info I just dont know what is what
M
I didn't do either. I did a lot of research trying to figure out where the VSS wire was on my Outback when I put the same stereo in it a few months ago and finally realized it wasn't worth it. The 4660NEX doesn't have speed sensitive volume control so all that and the reverse wilres will do is enable the babysitters that will tell you not to adjust the settings while you're moving.
The VSS wire is grey/pink wire going into pin one on the black connector coming out of the car. Pin 1 is top left when you're looking at the pins with the straight side of the connector on the right and the "d" shaped side on the left.
Thanks. The 4500 talks about speed sensitive volume in the manual. Id like that especially since Im in a cab. Id like the reverse wire as Im looking to install a backup camera as well
m
Nice. I wanted speed sensitive volume too. I searched the manual for my model and couldn't find any mention of it & there is no setting for it in the 4660NEX.
From what I saw, it looked like you need to remove the console around the shifter and tap into the reverse wire there. That being the case, I decided to worry about it when I install a backup camera (if I get around to it).
I hope your installation went well. I just got mine buttoned up for the final time yesterday. I originally installed a flush mount USB cable in place of the lighter. I had to use a ASB-C to A adapter for that and it broke when I put the stereo back in. I realized an adapter would always be a weak point & couldn't find a flush mount with USB C so I installed the non smoker power port in the lighter hole & ran the USB cable through the cubby yesterday. Hopefully I'm done now!
havent started yet. Waiting on my USB port mount which should be here tomorrow. Im thinking of replacing the cowling under the wipers if I mount the gps there. Mine is more white/gray than black.
ive got a backup camera. Im researching the best route to run the cord. Ill let you know how that goes.
M
So I was showing my son how solder the harness and get the panels off just for fun, but then I just ended up installing everything
. Since it was late I didn't do anything else while I was there LOL.
All in all it was pretty straightforward. Took me 3 hours. My trim kit was a very tight fit in the horseshoe. Apparently my dremmel disappeared in my recent move so I had to redneck my USB connector in the compartment, but it came out OK. My only other advise is if you have the PCM with the nav CD you need to remove some small covers from the side of the CD player and insert a rod in each of the four holes and the player will slide right out. I just dumped my GPS sensor in the area where the glove box would be in a MKII. Seems to work fine. I placed the mic on the steering wheel mostly because its easier to bend down and yell at something than look up. Test calls have been loud and clear per the wifey
I'm going to need to go back in and tap the speed sensor and reverse wire once I run the backup camera (that should be next week). The previous owner had wired up something custom so there was some extra stuff back there that I wasn't sure what to do with (wires running toward the frunk. I'm going to guess Radar detector). I may trace it back and get rid of it. If I'm lucky maybe I can use his wire to fish something else (anybody done a front camera?)
Here are the obligatory pictures
Wireless charging pad. line up the phone with the left wall and its just right
Not the nicest looking but it works
I love the wireless android auto. I don't think I could ever go back. The sound is a vast improvement especially with the top down at speed. Waze is nice as well.
Special shout out Jim010. I totally stole his idea for the logo in the middle of the faceplate. I love it. Really ties the room together
