I took it to HBL, they took care of the check engine light (cats) and the non-working cruise control, and something had changed about their service, I dunno, I like them again.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Calling all DC metro area 996 owners. I'm just trying to get a head count. I saw a few names here with DC in them, which I find funny since the last time I saw a 996 in DC was a yellow one just right when the 996 came out, and I have yet to see one 996 in DC since then.

POST 2Original post

My family is in McLean and I see them (996's) all the time. Not sure where you are looking but they are NOT in short supply. Funny story, I actually saw another Rennlister on 123 just north of 7 (between the 2 Tyson Malls) when visiting my Dad last spring. PM'ed him to verify and sure enough it was. what a small world.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm, guess maybe it's because I'm on the MD side of things, and on that side they're all just a bunch of cheap rich people. You say NC Summer 06...what part of NC? I'm in NC just 20 miles north of charlotte.

POST 4Original post

20 miles north of Charlotte? Like Concord area? I'll be in the Raleigh area. So are you in MD or NC???

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not quite Concord area. I'm due North of Charlotte on 77 (Cornelius is I guess the closest big town). I'm not the Porsche owner, I'm the gearhead son who goes to Davidson College who's dad in Maryland owns a 996 (i.e. I'm from Maryland but go to college in NC). So to answer your first question, I'm about 20 miles west of Concord (Davidson is basically 20 miles from everything).

POST 6Original post

Ah, Davidson. I know it well. Had several friends I grew up with go to there. Great school!

POST 7Original post

I'm in Arlington. Had a fun sighting yesterday on Great Falls Rd near Idlywood (stuck in traffic, naturally). A black 996 coming from the opposite direction... Immediately followed by a black 996 Turbo Driven by a hot girl... Husband and wife, maybe? I guess we know who wears the pants in that one Do you guys want to do another Saturday brunch? I'm busy this Saturday, but maybe next? -Justin

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, someone who actually knows Davidson. Not only that, but you didn't even ask me "is that a community college?" You must be from one of the southeastern states.

POST 9Original post

I live in Reston. Drove my 996 in to DC today. Hate crossing that T.R. Bridge with it all torn up. Gravel every where, Steel plates, etc.

POST 10Original post

I'm from Fairax, VA and San Antonio, TX since I had the privledge of growing up in a divorced family since age 7. And my wife lived in Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida growing up. So, between my wife and I, I think we have the Red states covered

POST 11Original post

Spike, There are so many Porsches in the DC Metro Area it is ridiculous. Not a day goes by where I don't see another Porsche. I see at least 3 Boxsters and 3 Cayennes everyday, a 996 at least every other day and a 993 or older 911 twice a week. The number of Cayman S sightings are on the rise too. Oh yeah, I've seen a couple of Carrera GTs too -- a yellow and a black one just driving in traffic. Justin, It is supposed to rain Saturday morning. Maybe Sunday would be better. BTW, I've also seen that hot lady in the Turbo driving around Tysons. Dell, That was me you saw in Tysons on your last visit.

POST 12Original post

Wasn't sure if you wanted me to put your name in the story. But it was very cool to see another Rennlister out on the road

POST 13Original post

Saw a pretty funky 911 last night on the Clara Barton. I'm color blind, but it looked like a combo of yellow and orange-he blinked twice so he's the real deal even if that wasn't a stock color.

POST 14Original post

HAHA! Justin, that was my mother and me. I remember passing you and I waved but it was a bit late. We were in the midst of swapping cars actually. I'll be sure to let her know she's still hot though. :-P there are lots of 996s in the area and that includes MD. I see tons on the streets but sadly much fewer at the track. That's where you'll catch dear old mom and me most, although I'll be in my track car which is also a 996. -KJ

POST 16Original post

Spike - I live in Concord, NC. I've been up to Davidson a few times. Nice "college town" and good school.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm, this is really odd that I've never seen a 996 except one time in the DC area. I even worked in downtown DC over the summer, and I've lived in MD just outside of DC all my life. I've seen plety of AMG's and M's, but outside of dealerships no 996's (but that one) and I don't think Ive seen more than 2 993's either. Well, I suppose I've also seen my friend's x50.

POST 18Original post

I live in Clarksville, MD and commute to Springfield, VA everyday....I can be found on the beltway twice a day during the work week. I see p-cars fairly often...gotta admit most are in their own world....once in a while I do get a nod or a flash.

POST 19Original post

I'm in DC and drive it every day. Plenty of them around here, several with very attractive female drivers, I might add.

POST 20Original post

I see tons of 996s and Boxsters everyday; however, I do work beside Porsche of Arlington. Seriouslt, there are a ton especialy in VA. Are there any other 996s going to show up at the Potmac PCA Autocross on Sunday? it is an awesome event and this is the first of the season. I am on the autocross committe and I can say that this season is packed including 2 challenges with the Chesapeake Region and Porschefest in August.

POST 21Original post

i am in fairfax , va with an arctic silver 996 c2 tip. saw a beautiful white 996 c4s on 66 the other day beautiful car........

POST 22Original post

I see plenty. Have seen 4 911's at Costco on a Sunday morning. I usually see at least 2 on my way to work every morning.

POST 23Original post

Hey, jsa, I'll see you at Rosecroft. I'll be in a yellow '99 cab -- assuming I get my tires mounted tomorrow! =Carlos=

POST 24Original post

In my commuter lot, every morning I have a fellow 996 Cab park fairly close to me almost every day now that the weather is better. I see P cars all over, even down here in hickville if Fredericksburg

POST 25Original post

I'd love to do an AutoX at some point soon, but wasn't able to attend the PCA school a few weeks ago (wanted to!). Will there be another one soon? I didn't see anything in the calendar... Justin

POST 26Original post

Plenty of P-cars out here in the Fairfax/Loudoun county border area. Mine is a DD and I'm on 66/495/95 (Baltimore) ~ once a week. Last week Friday, I saw 2 P-cars stopped on the side of the road on 495 West, right past the I270 exit. One was a 997 cab, I think. Didn't make out the other one.

POST 27Original post

Carlos, I hope that you can make it. I will have the white cab and I will also be assisting with tech in the morning, look me up. Justin, there is not another Potomac autox school this year; however, you do not need to go to one in order to participate. The club offers instructors at all of the meets and even experienced folks take one along from time to time...can always learn something new. The good thing about the Potomac autox is that you do not need to pre-register. You can simply show up the day of and participate (bring cash or check, no CC). The group is very inviting to newcommers and this is a great way to find the limits of your car in a fun and safe way.

POST 28Original post

I have a 996 and I live in DC. In my neighborhood, Georgetown, 996s, and Porsches in general, spread like kudzu. I swear they breed at night . . . If you leave two 996s unprotected and in too close proximity, the next morning you will see a cute little boxster as evidence of the evening's festivities.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just thought of something...if you live in Concord, that's clos enough to be a Davidson sports fan right? Or at least your friends who went there are? www.davidson.smugmug.com I figure it's ok to go OT in my own thread, and I never know who might buy some prints so it's worth it for me to put that out there.

POST 31Original post

sspike - Davidson has a sports program? Just kidding!

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey, our men's basketball team was leading OSU at the end of the first half in the first round of the NCAA tournament (and had it not been essentially a home game for OSU, I think we would have won). A basketball and soccer program anyways...I think the rest are just going through the motions. Richard

POST 33Original post

Gotta agree that there are a ton of P cars here in the DC metro area. At work, there are usually 2-4 in the parking lot. And I seem to pass at least a couple going back and forth from work and driving around town. Even stopped next to a clone (except a C2) of my car leaving my neighborhood at the same time a few days ago! Would love to meet some of the local guys and gals. Now that my warranty is up, I'm treading the dangerous waters of modsville. I have the Fabspeeds in the foyer and am waiting for the short shifter to come in the mail....

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, now that I've got the Washingtonians all in one place, where is everybody's favorite shop? I have my favorites for MB (Mitch Carr) and BMW (BMW Excluservice), but don't know of any for Porsche. Come to think of it, there is one other 996 I've seen at the parking lot of the doctor's office...so I've seen a total of 3 996's in the DC area...you guys need to drive around more.

POST 35Original post

It's bizarre that your "sighting ratio" is so different from mine because I'm only a few miles from Bethesda. I'd love to know if there is any consensus regarding favorite independent shop for 996's near here. I want to freshen up my car with a few things like a bunch of fluid changes, new shocks and a new clutch.

POST 36Original post

There are several shops in the Tysons/Vienna/Fairfax area. There is of course HBL/Porsche of Tysons on Rte. 7 just off the Toll Road. They have a pretty good service dept. although they are a little more expensive than the independents. Ask for Mike Milloy in the service department. Up the street about 3 blocks from HBL (on the same complex as eCitie Cafe) is InterSport. They're good guys and I take my car to them for service and repairs. I've also spoken to (but have never taken my car to) Ivan at IMA Motorsports on Prosperity Drive in Vienna. A lot of guys -- especially the racers -- take their cars to Ivan. His shop is smaller than Intersport's and it always seems busy so you may have to leave you car there a few days. Down the street from IMA (right across from BMW of Fairfax) is ASG of Fairfax. I have heard good things about them too. A lot of guys with older 911s take their cars to ASG. Finally, there is another dealership in the area... Porsche of Arlington in Rte. 1 and Glebe Rd. across from Potomac Yard. They're pretty good too but just too far from my place in Tysons.

POST 37Original post

I second programmatore for HBL. Mike Milloy's a real decent guy. I went to their free clinic yesterday. This was the first time I had the opportunity to look at my car in details with a Porsche tech (they take you in the shop with your car). It was very nice to walk around and under the car with the tech who is there not only to check out the car but also to answer any questions you may have. They had some door prizes too (tequipment stuff). Pretty nice. I have not had any experience with the other shops listed by Prog.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm, I'm surprised to hear HBL plugged since I know from MB's (the cars I know enough about to do all of my own work on, but occasionally I used to check with them on things) that their MB shop is pretty sub standard.

POST 39Original post

For MB I go to German Service Center for Porsche I've gone to Tischer and Arlington Porsche, right now my car is at At Speed Racing having tranny work done.

POST 40Original post

I've had many problems with HBL. Multiple visits for multiple issues and they're still not fixed. After the warranty period expires, I'm considering not purchasing another p-car because of the substandard service at HBL. It's really been that bad. Curry's in Chantilly did a fine job of mounting/balancing new rubber. No scratches on rim.

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You all don't go to Radial Tire for tires and such? Among BMW guys they are THE tire shop.

POST 42Original post

Programmatore hit most of the main P-car shops. I like Intersport, but I've had work done at the other independents, and they are all good. I had such bad experiences at HBL (w/ non-Porsches) that I swore I wouldn't go back in a million years. Since it's been about a million years now, it's possible they may have changed, but they would really have to prove themselves to me. =Carlos= P.S. Potomac Region put on a nice auto-x today. I enjoyed meeting Jim and others, and thanx to the auto-x committee for doing their usual good job.

POST 43Original post

I too used Curry's and they were pretty good; however, Tim the main Porsche Tech left and is now with Funktion Auto. I just had them do a 30K and some other odds and ends and I was really satisfied. They have a brand new shop and are really taking care of their customers as they are trying to build up a clientel.

POST 44Original post

I have to give a plug for Intersport...I've been going to Charlie and Omar for more than 15 years and have never had any real problem. They installed my supercharger and I've had not a single problem with it. BTW, Ivan started at Intersport then went off and started his own. He is very good too. Just moved from Potomac and now in Leesburg. Spend a lot of time in Tyson's (Starbucks and Panera) and have a place in Soloman's Island that I hope to use a lot this summer. Maybe get a small group of P cars to do an overnight trip down to the tiki bar???

POST 46Original post

I'd like to add a little more about the Curry's experience. The total price of the mounting+balancing was a hair over $100. Additionally, they washed the car and vacuumed the interior free of charge. They also parked the car directly in front of the shop and as I was getting into the car and was about to reach down to remove the protective paper mats over the floormats, a gentleman literally ran out of the shop to throw them away for me. A truly suprising level of a service for merely putting tires on the car. Or is that normal?

POST 47 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They've been shodding the cars in my family for the past 15 years or so now. In addition to the prices and level of service, a big plus is that they use the 2 piece european weights that don't scratch the wheels. It's why I was surprised that they weren't mentioned before.

POST 48 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You actually let other people wash your car?

POST 49Original post

Hey I would like to pay my hello's. I drive a 99 C2 in the unique color of Orient Red. I did have the pleasure of seeing a beautiful 2000 C4 a few weeks ago outside of Myer Emco in Bailey's Crossroads. I live in Maryland out Rt4 and here I usually am the only 996 on the road. Plenty of Jaguars and Land Rovers and BMW 7 series though it seems.

POST 50Original post

I grew up out that way in Upper Marlboro and when I visit that area all I see are Boxters and the other cars you mentioned.

POST 51Original post

I'm in McLean over by Tyson's Corner... I need to start getting together with the D.C. / NoVA P-Car crowd. Sounds like a fun group. Mark

POST 52 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On the DC area service shops, HBL has really tried my patience. I've never seen a dealer so bad at scheduling, communicating, and following orders. The old service manager was good, not just a good guy but he actually knew what he was talking about. Mike Milloy is a good guy, but I don't think he should be a service manager. Then there is Evan who I feel for because he's basically all alone there, but he really just can't handle the work load they give him. Cashiers don't pick up the phone to let me pay before pick up, and I've never had anyone respond to a voicemail. I know dealers that are MUCH better (Euromotorcars, MB of Arlington), but sadly they I don't know any good Porsche dealers. So, it's time to try an independant. I know Autothority and may try them, but I'm going to get a price quote on replacing a clutch from Intersport too since Autothority seemed kinda high for an indy. BTW, to any MB owners here, if you want an independant MB tech in the area, as far as I'm concerned Mitch Carr's is THE shop. To BMW owners, it's BMW Excluservice. Maybe it's unfair for me to compare those MB and BMW places to a Porsche place, but I'm going to try and find something comparable anyways.

POST 53Original post

Hey everyone, Also from the DC area. Live over by Lowes Island in Sterling and work in Reston whenever I'm not working from home. We still use HBL for two of our in warranty cars and I am not very pleased in general with the experience. I am mostly a DIY guy on the Pcar whenever I can muster the time. Have used Curry's for some major stuff and overall can't complain about the work or service other than the price is on the high side. But they (Curry's) do take pretty good care of you and your car.

I'm in Reston and drive a white 996 with black wheels.

POST 57 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As long as I'm recommended area stuff, I also want to recommend Tire Van. They've now done the tires on two of our cars (one being the Porsche), and they're great. Their tire prices are very competitive (just a few dollars more than Tirerack if you DON'T count the shipping cost in tirerack's prices) and while their mounting charge isn't the lowest in town, they do a very good job and they come to you or your office and do it there.

POST 58Original post

trinitony, I have been going to ASG for over 10 years for both air cooled and water cooled 911's.

POST 59Original post

Hi, I'm in Herndon VA; work in Reston VA and have a light green 2000 Cab; I've never been in DC with my 996. IMO the streets are too bad so I only take my SUV there. I try not to go to HBL anymore. They are just bad. Intersport does good work but they are pretty pricy - seem to always charge book times, even when clearly less labor needed.

POST 60Original post

Rockville, Maryland. 996's are a dime a dozen in our area. Unfortunately, mine bit the big one when a kid hit me on Wisconsin Ave (Bethesda) on my way home from work. I'll be looking for a replacement soon when my back heals and I'll be driving mine to work. Pete

POST 61Original post

Hmmm... I'm fairly new to the area - abt a year now - I live downtown Annapolis. While not exactly DC area, it is close. I frankly have been quite surprised at the few P-cars I see. With the number of tracks in the area, I assumed I would be in good company. I hardly EVER see Porsches. Maybe I'm out at the wrong times. I do see an occasional Boxster, but they're all silver, so I barely notice them anymore... I actually have considered getting out of Porsche ownership while here. With the shortage of garages in my area, few cars around... even the the local PCA magazine is only a pamphlet... I hate the thought of having to go back to the Pentagon to get back in the fold...

POST 62Original post

Hi all, Im new to Rennlist, great site by the way. Unfortunately, I have to say I have had a very bad experience with Currys auto service in Chantilly and would never use them again! A few years ago I took my new tires to get mounted to my wheels and not only did they scratched the HELL out of my wheels they must have used a metal pray bar to get the tire over the lip of the rim. The worst part... these were magnesium wheels to a Ferrari!! I guess it serves me right. They of course denied anything to do with it. I only took my wheels and tires to them because Matts own father who I have had many drinks with at the Vienna Inn sent me. There are many stories with them... frankly all Matt seems to care about is making money and not helping the customer. Sad, but seems to be the Northern VA attitude.

Figured I would chime in. My name is James Nichols and I recently started selling new Porsches for Rockville Porsche Audi. Our new dealership should be done by the end of summer, and hopefully we can host some events this fall. While I still drive a BMW (for now), I am hoping there is a Cayman in my future. I attended one of the winter Rockville meets and have some video footage that I still need to upload. Look forward to seeing some of you guys at future events.

POST 64Original post

Great to see you on James. Congratulations on the new position. It just so happens that I'm in need of a car as mine was totaled last month by a careless driver. I haven't begun searching yet but have stopped by your dealership a couple of times to look at an 06 997 that they have on the lot. I need to finish physical therapy before and get a settlement check before I can make a purchase to replace my old car. Next time, I'll stop by and say hi, Pete

POST 65Original post

Damn Pete - I'm sorry to hear that happened! You had a beautiful 996 but I'm confident we can find something suitable as a replacement. I'm there every day except Thursdays so let me know if I can be of any assistance. Good luck with your physical therapy and get better soon!

POST 67Original post

Sorry for the confusion. "New" as in I am new to the dealership, and also that I am a sales consultant for the new car sales department. We have a separate sales staff dedicated to used vehicles. We are building our new facility down the street next to Woodmont Country Club, but as previously stated, will not be finished until late Summer.

Well, I'll be finding out how the service apartment at Autothority is on Tuesday in a true test: my mom will be bringing the car in, so I'll see how much BS gets passed my way as tends to when a shop sees a woman with a high dollar car.

POST 69Original post

I believe it is both, or at least ownership changed if not management in the last year or two. Of course I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I could be wrong.

POST 70Original post

I am in Ashburn VA... Just used TireVan to install a set of Pilot Sport Rib...185 30 on OEM Rims...Great. Chris 2000 Porsche 996 C2 Cab Eibach springs. Short shifter B&M. Fabspeed Exhaust. Agency Power Rear Adj. Control Arms

POST 71Original post

To catch up from a few posts about Curry's (Dulles). Be very carefull with them. I used them for several years on my Boxster, and 944 and basic maintenance on a Discovery and Volvo. I spent thousands there over a couple of years. I had a few issues but they seemed to come through. A lot of P-car owners told me to run but I didn't because I felt comfortable with them...big mistake. I just got done spending $4k there. Took the 996 home and shortly after the fan failure light comes on. Take it back, they have it for a couple of days and say needs new water pump. They replace the water pump I get half way home the light comes on again. Take it back and I get a call 2 days later that something poped on the test drive and smoke was pouring out from the tailpipes. I get to the shop and the person test driving the car says " Sorry man, I didn't dog your car but I didn't drive it like a ***** either. WTF. Find out that a freze plug blew. After months of fighting with them they would not budge. I had a warranty that covered about $7K of the damage but would not pay the whole bill because Curry's screwed things up. I paid over $1K lost car for 2 months and they would not help out at all. These guys are great until they mess up, then they don't care if they loose you...I make sure to tell everyone about them. I still had problems even after that with getting them to fix the car right. I will never go back.

POST 72 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are you saying they put the wrong size tire on? I didn't think it was even possibly to put a 185 on an OEM rim.

POST 73Original post

He probably meant to type 285 but "fat fingered" the keyboard and hit the 1 instead.

POST 74Original post

A little late to join the thread, but +1 for the D.C. area here. I drive my C2 daily from Fairfax to Reston and often to into D.C. and up to Baltimore. I typically see at least a half dozen p-cars during any given 1/2 hour drive in the area. I don't think I saw a plug for Autobahn Service Inc (near Fairfax Circle) in any of the posts. I was referred there by another rennlister and Jose has been great! He spent at least 3 1/2 hours on my PPI, charged me for less time and has been very professional and fair in all dealings since. Autobahn has 6 lifts and the shop is always full with Porsche's of all years and models.

POST 75Original post

Wow, jsaindc! Im so sorry to hear about all your trouble with Currys! Have you thought about writing to the Better Business Bureau? I did... I would like to say I have had good luck with Intersport in Tysons as others have said. Amor is great, but he is always trying to sell you something...

POST 76Original post

I have thought about it but instead I will just let everyone know my experience. Matt was suposed to be a true car guy when he opened up shop. I think now it is about the money as he keeps opening shops and doing more oil changes on min-vans. I guess if there are people dumb enough to pay $109/hr to work on a non-performance car then you can't blame him.

POST 77 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, Autothority simply reset the check engine light and didn't do anything about it. They also forgot to unlock the radio (that one isn't a big deal). I took it to HBL, they took care of the check engine light (cats) and the non-working cruise control, and something had changed about their service, I dunno, I like them again. Evan's cool when he's not being stretched string-thin.

POST 78Original post

What tracks are in the area? I know about VIR, but what other tracks are within a 4-5 hr drive? I'm curious because there's a chance I might be moving to VA in a couple of months.

POST 79Original post

Summit Point is only a little over an hour away. Watkins Glen is about 5 1/2 hours away.
