Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I will be painting center console. I do not want to match the exterior color, rather I want it to look like other metallic interior pieces. Any recommendation on which spray can? Found this. Titanium silver may be the color. Anyone experimented with this? http://www.rustoleum.com/en/product-...stomer-reviews Thanks.

POST 2Original post

It's really hard to get an exterior paint quality finish from a spray can, especially big box store quality stuff like Rustoleum. I refinished some plastic interior bits in my old S8, and on the advice of the Audi forums used Tamiya spray paint designed for doing high quality plastic models. The spray pattern is excellent and the paint is designed for use on plastics, not the case with most spray paint. You can get primer, color, and clear coat. Most any hobby shop should carry it. Blatant self promotion, if you don't want to potentially ruin your original console I have an old one I'm selling......

I did not think of Tamiya, but that may be a good idea. I am planning on picking up a used console locally tomorrow. I will PM you if that deal falls apart.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

BTW, sanding should be done by hand or ok to use tool? I have Dremel.

POST 5Original post

I think there are several DIY guides on here, I'm not sure how you would Dremel. I would think that prepping with hand sanding, going rough to smooth, is your best bet.

POST 6Original post

I painted a few components in my interior, going for the Porsche "Alumalook" paint. I ended up using Dupli Color Perfect Match BGM0340 Silver Metallic Here's a thread with some pics of the various paints.

POST 9Original post

I painted several of my interior pieces with Testors Diamond Dust with mixed results. My process was basically to hand-sand using various grades of sandpaper from ~200-1000 to remove all of the surface texture and imperfections, apply ~2 coats of primer, 4-5 light coats of Testors, and ~2 coats of clear. I was very happy with the results immediately after painting, however after a few weeks tiny pinhead-size bubbles appeared in several of the pieces. They started appearing after the car was sitting in the sun. My best guess was that there was some residue silicone in the plastic parts from prior usage of Armour All (before I knew better) but I'm not sure. I had to repaint the stereo surround and hazard surround after completely sanding down again to remove the bubbles. The parts I painted were my aluminum guage rings, hazard surround, ashtray delete, shifter horseshoe, and the stereo surround. Most of the parts have stood up well for the past year with the exception of the shifter horseshoe piece which is very scratched up and needs a repaint. I'll probably skip the clearcoat since it doesn't seem to have helped and it is easier to touch-up or repaint without the clear. If I did it again I would try the Dupli Color in the hopes that it would stand up better to scratches. The Testors is pretty soft. Overall I think it looks great though. If anyone has any insight into the bubbles or tips on how to make the solution more durable (like a better clearcoat) I'd love to hear them. Note my shifter surround is removed in the picture below. Waiting for time to repair.

POST 10Original post

I'd recommend hand sanding. Sand it using medium grit, then work your way down to very fine grit sandpaper. Get it way smoother than you think it needs to be. Once it's painted, every tiny scratch and divot shows through. I'd also recommend putting one coat of silver, letting it dry overnight, then sanding it again. The silver coat will highlight any defects you missed. Then you can add additional coats. The prep work takes about 75% of the total project time. I also used Dupi-color "adhesion promoter" (p/n CP199) as a first coat. It claims to improve adhesion to plastics. I painted a few interior parts about 6 months ago. So far so good, but only time will tell how well it holds up.

So today, I sanded the rubbery part of the console with 60 and then 120 grit. Since I had 600 grit at home, I then sanded it with 600. I will try to sand with finer grit next week. Did you sand non-rubbery part of the console too? I figured those areas are not exposed and did not sand. Honestly I was getting tired hand sanding just the rubbery parts. Did you use plastic cleaner before applying adhesion promoter?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 11255672

I didn't paint the console. Just the ashtray surround and the three dashboard trim strips. After sanding, I cleaned with isopropyl alcohol then Applied adhesion promoter per instructions on the label.
