Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Two separate shops were certain that it was a bearing, until 2 other shops tested with a stethoscope and heard the sound coming from the transaxle, which later diagnosed as a shot diff.
Leading evidence: 'Test with a stethoscope and heard the sound coming' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check shoe' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I heard a really bad whine from the rear end of my car this morning. It doesn't change with RPM's but does change with speed. So at least it isn't in the motor. I'm guessing rear-end or tranny. Then as I heard it, turned the stereo down I smelled a faint odor of metal burning for a second or two, then it went away.
It's definitely a mechanical whine.... I hope it was only because it was cold out. *sigh*
doesn't sound like a tranny problem.. mine went out on me, but when a tranny blows, you usually will know.. if it still runs.. like bet said, maybe something simple? clutch issue? who knows, gotta check it out at a dealer.. good luck.
I only hear it at frwy speeds but I did push in the clutch and the noise was still there. I need to put on the brakes and see if the noise is still present.
After driving it on the highway, feel the center of the four wheels with your hand. They should all be equal in temperature. One that is considerably hotter may indicate bearing, brakes, and in the case of the back wheels, emegency brake.
My differential went out and the noise was definitely a mechanial whine sound as you described. The car otherwise showed absolutely no other symptoms, it was runnin very smooth. Two separate shops were certain that it was a bearing, until 2 other shops tested with a stethoscope and heard the sound coming from the transaxle, which later diagnosed as a shot diff. Have that checked out too. I am very curious to know how many miles on your car. Mine has 47k when it happened. If you have a shot diff, then you are the only other person i know of so far besides me.
Peter
This makes sense now as I have noticed a "hot" smell as of late when getting out of the car. I van pool everyday now so I just figured it was from sitting and not being driven.
I will check this out tonight.
Yeah... the car runs just fine otherwise.
It's a '99 with 68k miles and at 55k miles I put Mobil-1 gear oil in the tranny when I did my oil change.... in case anyone was curious if I had ever changed out the gear oil.
I've had a blown diff before (another car) and this is nothing like that. Typically a blown diff sounds like marbles in a can.
You can usually determine if the sound is a wheel bearing with the following proceedure:
Drive down a smooth straight wide road at about 50 mph. Depress the clutch to eliminate any engine noise and swerve (careful of other cars here) from side to side. Listen for a change in sound or pitch. Generally if it is a noisy bearing you will hear a noticable change as the wheel loads up and unloads. Often you can even pinpoint which wheel bearing is bad with this technique.
If the noise stays constant after this it is doubtful that a wheel bearing is noisy.
Good luck!
I just had my '03 in the shop last week for a loud whine that came on suddenly and seemed to get louder and louder. It was a high pitched whine that got higher as the RPM's increased. Fixed in short order. It was an idler arm.
How can one test if the water pump or idler arm is bad? Is there an easy way. I would be super excited to learn that my water pump or the idler arm is bad than work on a perfectly fine differential. And save some $$ in the process.
Thanx, Peter
I'm not sure how you would differentiate, but my pump only made noise under load. It turned out that the water pump as well as some other related parts (idler pulleys and/or belts) had to be replaced. Your dealer or mechanic should be able to diagnose it immediately.
Warm up the engine slightly, then turn off the engine and remove the belt. Take it for a drive and see if the problem still exsists. If it does, it is not caused by anything driven by the pullies. You already said tho, that the noise does not change with engine speed, but with car speed, so why even bother looking at the water pump?
