Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You'll have your RMS replaced nex time you have either (1) and RMS leak that requires replacement; or (2) replaced when you have a new clutch installed.
Leading evidence: 'very overinflated' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'very overinflated' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace nex time you have either (1) and rms leak' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Have you guys heard of GT3 Motorsport Seals being used instead of the factory 996 seals?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Take the car in this morning for its 15K service. Good news is that I learned that I am still under full warranty - I thought that ended last year and I was now in CPO but I was a year out
An hour after I leave the dealer I get a call and I recognise the number. Uh oh.
RMS.
I'm told that they are going to fit the Cayenne seal. I thought the general thinking these days is the 997 seal.
I know this is discussed to death and the search I just did didn't really settle my mind. Car is on the lift at this point so not a lot I can do I guess.
How is this dreaded news? You have a 2003 and it is just now getting it's 15K service? It is probably leaking becasue it hasn't been driven enough to keep the seals from drying out.
So when the seals dry out, that's when it starts to seep? My car was never driven by the previous owner, 02 w/ 12k miles... I suppose I should start driving it or at least get the RMS replaced. 15k is coming up anyway.
Opinions?
The deals will be MORE prone to leaking if they are dried out or didn't seat properly. You'll have your RMS replaced nex time you have either (1) and RMS leak that requires replacement; or (2) replaced when you have a new clutch installed.
Arnee,
Drive it anyway
I wouldn't go about replacing it until it needs to be done. My car never needed one until 35k miles, I think. Some cars may never need it.
Looks great, by the way - welcome!
Justin
well i have put 5K of that fifteen on it since i got it six months ago and i'm driving it every day...... one off - maybe? could also be the start of a journey to a new engine. two extremes, but who knows.
not something i wanted to contemplate, thats why for me it's dreaded news.
I was in the same situation. It appears that the new seal seems to work very much better than the one which came on your engine. I was happy to get the new one at Porsche's expense.
Yeah. I also believe it's because it's blown out of proportion. It can be fixed for a relatively low cost; free if within warranty!
For me, I'll just drive it until a new clutch is necessary.
Have you guys heard of GT3 Motorsport Seals being used instead of the factory 996 seals? I read it on RennTech in a post.
if it's under warr. drive it like you stole it and hope if anything is going to happen to the engine that it happens when you have the warr. it's all gravy then.......
This RMS thing is a bit crazy. Because you have a leaking seal you think the engine may go, not so. The seal is a $20-$30 part. Its only a pain cause you have to drop the trans to get to it. And its just a leak when it does go bad. This is simply a common problem, but it shouldnt be an alarm that your engine will be a POS or something.
Dont worry about it, it will be fixed and will be a non issue. Dont read anything into your engine cause of a single leaking seal.
hey lvdell...... just trying to say that if the car is under warr. you should be okay. and that once the car is out of warr. that's a major concern bc of the cost to fix it...........hope it didn't come off as somrthing else........
nope, didn't come as anything else. Just asking what kind of logic it was. If you don't plan on keeping it past the warranty then if you treat that car "like you stole it" then you have nothing to worry about. However, if you do decide to keep it past the warranty, you best take better care of your car
The IMS (intermediate seal) as well as the RMS does not cause engine failure. A total loss of oil would cause the failure. But for a RMS or IMS to to fail and have all 9+ liters of oil escape is so remote it's not even worth thinking about.
the seal leak is jsut a leak nothing breaks becasue of it
when the ims breaks there is no oil leak before it goes , once it breaks all the oil comes out, theres little warning (slight grinding noise from the bellhousing area...ive seen one pre failure, you never really know) and even at that point your gonna need an engine
