Leading evidence: 'Check water lines and everything' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check water lines and everything' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
IF you changed your coolant like you mentioned you were going to, you may not have bled the air out of the system properly and the air found it's way to the highest point in the system which if the tank.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Howdy everyone, perhaps you guys can help me out: I have a 996 C2 1998 without 3rd radiator kit. Today I Tracked my car here in So Paulo Raceway (Interlagos) and the water temperature after 3 laps raised from 95 (normal) to 120 degrees celsius (TOP) Than I needed to take 1 slow lap to cool down the car to 100 degress, then 2 more hot laps the temperature raised again to 120.
Is it normal ? Adding 3rd radiator will eliminate this problem ?
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!!!
Yes, it will fix the problem. Also you need to drop the RPM's to about 6700 Max, It wont effect your speed that much but helps keep the temperature down. You may want to put a screen over the new 3rd radiator as well, as it is subject to damage from rubber marbles and stuff.
Can't think of a better candidate for a center radiator. Just do it. I found it quite straight forward to install myself. It also gave me a chance to clean out the existing radiators. It's amazing how many cigarette buts and how much sand was behind them, even though they were clean in the front. Taking the front bumper cover off is easy. Loren has a great DIY post on Renntech. org for the parts and procedure. It took me some 200 miles before all the air was out and the coolant level stabilized, so keep a close eye on it after you finish. Even though I have not yet tracked my car, I would regularly run temperaure of over 212 DegF (100 DegC) in the hot weather. Now I am seldom over 190 DegF (88 DegC).
The third radiator will help a lot, but if it's not eough you can try the Cup Car radiator. Plan on an entire weekend for this project, but it is do-able.
First, make sure your radiator fans are working at full capacity and in both speed modes.
Remove ANY blockage, leaves, road debriss etc, from the air intakes.
Be sure both fans work and at low speed and high speed.
If low speed doesn't work the system will go to high speed, eventually, but now they may be already below the "power curve".
A/C off??
Third radiator..
Can any of us imagine Porsche designing/producing a road-worthy vehicle that needs an improvement on this scale??
Not me!
I would have to agree with wwest.
Your temps sound quite high even for track conditions.
I'm sure that the ambient temp. where you are is higher, but I was running my '02 996 at the track moderately hard at the track this weekend, and my temp. gauge never read above 190 degrees F. This was with ambient temperatures of 65-70 degrees F. There were a lot of other 996's out all weekend as well, and I never heard of anyone having an overheating problem.
Obviously, the track itself may make a difference, but I would take a close look at the cooling system of your car first; if nothing's wrong add the 3rd radiator.
Guys, thanks for the help! Just returned from my mecanic and we noticed a LOT OF AIR on the water system
Wednesday I'll change all the coolant. Fans seems to be allright. No faults on the computer. He'll check the water lines and everything. Next track day I'll see the results. Then I'll think about 3rd radiator.
As wwest said, It's too strange a 996 heatso easely...
Thanks for all the help!
Now I'm surprised: After the trackday I noticed the coolant level dropped a lot, I needed to add 1 liter of water to get back to the level. That's after one day of track ? Now I checked below the car and there's no point of water leaking, so it might be evaporating when the car is hot. Is that possible ? Could my coolant reservatory or the cap be broken making water vaporate at high temp ???
Thanks in advance!
IF you changed your coolant like you mentioned you were going to, you may not have bled the air out of the system properly and the air found it's way to the highest point in the system which if the tank. Try topping off the tank and see if it goes lower. The is no way any coolant can evaporate in a closed system.
1999 is right. Your system just burped. It takes some time to get the air out of your cooling system.
wwest, malfunctioning fans won't make the car overheat on the track. Cup cars don't even have them. They are only for low speeds or running the car while parked.

If the third radiator was so unnecessary, then why ,oh why do the GT3s have them?
It is, IMO, a worthwhile upgrade on a tracked car in hot ambient temps.
