So it is going on 11 pm and I am filled with seller's remorse.

Be sure to replace your lug bolts every 2 years - heat soak from the brakes, you know.

And I like the black instrument faces of my 996 vs the white ones in the 997...though I understand I can change those out.

Then I went for a four mile run yesterday and I had been using a treadmill during the last year but yesterday I went back on a local track.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been bludgeoned by time and seduced by the dark side. Last night, driving home, I faced the fact that my reactions and coordination just aren't what they were back in my 993 days. What was once second nature I now have to work for and it still isn't the same.
Maybe this is what has been attracting me to the idea of a 993 with tiptronic. But when I drove one, it turned me off, it couldn't make the sale. At the same time the sirens kept singing the praises of the 997 and how it is the new generation of the 993.
So I knew that I really needed to drive a 997 and I stopped by a local indie dealer that has a large variety and also a full service department. I should pick up the car tomorrow. Oh yes...I did test drive it. A one owner MY 2006 Carrera S...3.8 engine, bigger brakes, etc. 67k miles, has had the 60k service, new Pirellis all around, needs nothing. So the money I was going to spend refreshing my 996 suspension is going into buying me this newer car.
And to sooth my aging skills, I took the tiptronic. It is much better than the old 4 speed version and it has the PDK-like feature of being able to downshift instantly even in automatic mode. Yes there is that lag, the tell tail stain of all autos (save pdk)...but I felt very comfortable with the buttons on the steering wheel...it will be fast enough.
Pluses...all of the above and it isn't a 991. And yes...I appreciate how the wider hips make the car look better...less long and more stubby and nasty.
Negatives...I still like the interior of my 996 much better. And I like the black/black of my 996 vs the Slate gray of this 997. And I like the black instrument faces of my 996 vs the white ones in the 997...though I understand I can change those out. And I'll miss knowing I have a real spare tire...though I'll pick up one of the old inflaters and throw it in the frunk.
Yes I'll poke my head in the door here just to see what you are up to. But for the most part I will now be inflicting myself on the paunches and bald heads of the 997 guys.
Best wishes and warmest regards to all...(and watch me grind the 993 guys with this).
The 997 CS is an awesome car and the 3.8 is the best part of the S package. I looked at several and they are great cars. Please post pics soon. congrats!
So long, JI. I look forward to watching you make heads explode in the 997 forum.
Be sure to replace your lug bolts every 2 years - heat soak from the brakes, you know.
How long did you own the 996? 9 months? Not a record (Groovzilla), but gotta be close...
The 997 crowd is much more likely to enjoy "what are you wearing" threads, BTW. So you've got that going for you. Which is nice.
It was just a matter of a specific car at a specific time. One owner...more than enough grunt...and I'm leary of tt maintanence.
The tiptronic also means that my wife could drive the car if she ever had to. It has been so long since she drove a stick that I could get her to even try the 996. Now if she has to she can.
I bought the 996 on September 26. I really hadn't thought of selling it but I was pissed that I wasn't as sharp as I used to be. Then I went for a four mile run yesterday and I had been using a treadmill during the last year but yesterday I went back on a local track. About 7 pm last night my left big toe started to really hurt...enough that it made using the clutch unpleasant. What's the great Clint Eastwood line..."A man has to know his limitations." Well I started thinking about what mine might be...or will become in future years.
I already ordered two extra full sets of lug nuts. I'll change them every 5k with my oil. And I may start using this indie store for service. They had another 06 that they rebuilt the engine on because of the IMS. The engine came with a one year warranty but the idea of the 3.8 and the extra horse power (sort of like Viagra) appealed more to me...particularly with the tiptronic it sort of evens things out.
It has been fun reading your posts. I will be dropping in here a lot because it is the most fun of the RL forums. And I'll contribute when it makes sense.
The nice thing about the 997 forum is that they like the picture of me in the pimp suit. And they use their Rolexes for facial piercings.
Be well.
J
Congrats John! Curious: Were did you get it from? And KC is right in saying that some folks depart from the 996 but not from the 996 forum. See you soon.
My car is perfect in every way Except it insists upon living in SoCA, & I can't fault it for that as I like it here too! However I tire of the constant chore of shifting the 6-speed manual. I will buy a PDK Porsche as soon as I can afford it. Tiptronic is not acceptable to me.
Hey, congrats on the new car. I highly recommend that your initial posts in the 997 forum contain numerous IMSB-related questions, comments, and speculations.
Yes yes, your pots have been fun and entertaining but you have suffered much reterect on the 996 forum . Good luck with the 997 and please come back to stir the pot once and a while
Thanks for the nice words from everyone. So it is going on 11 pm and I am filled with seller's remorse. I've been jumping from car to car over the last two years...and the more I drove the 996 the more I grew attached to it...it is so damn underrated. If only I had been able to get my wife to sell her Mercedes and buy a Porsche I might have been spared this ying yang quandary.
I think what makes the 997 w/ tip work for me is the 3.8 engine. But I may have to put black electrical tape over all the bright stuff in the cockpit. It completely lacks the 996's low key approach.
I've already ruffled the 993 feathers. And I've gotten good advice from the 997 folks on flat tire fixes and protection.
And I will not be a stranger here...
Best wishes to all.
JI - Congrats on the 997, and enjoy the new forum, but I'm sure you will inevitably succumb to the call of the 996 forum.......

Awww..c'mon! Here's how to think of it John...First it's a Porsche, Second it's a Porsche 911. Most people don't know the differences between a 993, 996, 997, or whatever, and only see the classic shape of the infamous 911. Enjoy your car no matter what anyone else thinks or says. You made the best pick for you!
And....it's not officially over until you post a Final Top Ten List and lock your thread!
Hey! I resemble that comment. Funny thing is I checked into the 997 Forum this morning and see Irish's post about a spare tire and I immediately think of responding "Oh no you don't.....
" and I see it's true. John the 997S is fun but 996 Forum will be calling you back. Enjoy the car.
Here is how JohnnyIrish's test drive ended. Myself and a home boy took him for a ride, he enjoyed every minute of it.

Congrats John!... Enjoy the new to you wheels. It's great that you found another vehicle that suits your needs and wants better - and it's still a Porsche...
I've posted my mixed emotions somewhere here and on the 997 forum. I like the 996 interior much better, I like the 997 exterior a lot...the driving differences are interesting. More grunt from the 997...a nicer rev from the 996. Perfer the sound of the 996 to the sport exhaust on the 997.
I've been busy the last 4 weeks, well John, good look with your 997, we will miss your comments on this forum, don't forget to ask in the other forum if they have a 996 headlight kit transformation for your 997
Well I've come to think that not having a spare tire is the anxiety point of a 997...so I ordered a full 996 tool kit including a jack. And I'll throw in a small piece of 2x4 wood to get the car up high enough to get the jack under it...it I ever need to. I'm also picking up tire plug kit. And I'm chasing a periodic "clunk" "rattle" that sounds like it is inside the cabin and just behind the passanger seat so I'm guessing it is Motor Mounts...anything to get me back to the Barista at The Auto Gallery.
Little differences...when the spoiler went up in the 996 it would just come into view at the bottom of the window. Not so in the 997...I miss it. Oil pressure seems softer in the 997...the manual says that with a fully warm engine, 3.5 bar at 5000 rpm is normal...I'd prefer it be 4 bar or a little more as in my 996. The 19 inch wheels are darty compared to the 17s. The tiptronic is very livable, maybe it will one day become exciting. So far its a little like mashed potatoes over on the 997 forum.
I know exactly what you mean. I love that too.
I am also considering moving on to a 997 (post IMSB, so 2009 era) but I know it will be very hard to say goodbye to my 996 when (and if) the time comes.
Johnny,
Don't forget to get the OEM tire changing gloves so you don't ruin your nice manicured nails or get any kind of dirt on your Rolex.

I'm honestly not sure I would. I think it would have been wiser (and less expensive) to soldier along with the manual transmission for another year or two. And though I wasn't looking for a black car when I bought the 996 it rapidly grew on me. I like it better than my slate gray 997.
I was finding the 996 suspension harsh for LA streets. Maybe it was just the age of the components...I thought of redoing all the shocks, struts, springs bushings, etc. That might have made it quieter, but not necessarily less harsh. The adjustable suspension (with a button) on the 997 has my wife much more comfortable.
I've already talked about the interiors, and the exteriors and that I do prefer inside the 996 and outside the 997. And though it was purism that sent me to the manual trans 996 (and the edge of a manual is very nice) the Tiptronic has been well appreciated and I'm probably driving faster with it than I drove with the stick...and enjoying it more.
Lastly the engines...I wish the 3.8 sounded more like the 3.6...however it is nice having a stronger overall motor.
Maybe in a few months I'll have more seasoning on the swap. And the very act of writing this all out has me thinking that car to car I made a good decision...at the same time I'd like to have the money back in my pocket.
