Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I'm thinking about using my 1999 C4 all winter and am in the process of looking for snow tires. Can anyone give me advice on regular cold weather operation and winter driving experiences? I'm thinking if I powerwash it once a week I can keep the corrosion to a minimum (I hope).
Thank you for any advice.
Eric
I have an '03 C4S and I drove it EVERY DAY last winter up here in the frozen north (Ottawa, Canada) where we had record snow falls. With Pirelli snow tires, it is one of the best winter vehicles I've ever owned. Go for it.....Porsches are meant to be driven!!
If I can drive this, you can drive a C4! Get a set of used 986 / 996 17" wheels and put on Dunlop Wintersport M3s. It's not just the tread pattern, but the compound of the tire. The M+S tires are softer in the cold temps. The hot summer tires turn into hockey pucks much below 40 degrees...making even the slightest moisture dangerous. But with snows on a C4...the only thing that will cause problems is snow over 6". And even that may not "stop" you.
The only thing that makes me grit my teeth is hitting sand, rocks, and rock salt at 85 mph. Any modern snow tire will be great, I have Pirellis. And for bad days I have a Subaru.
I did this last winter in MI w/ my C4 w/ 80K miles. Need snow tires for sure. Give your car lots of time to warm up. I will not however be doing it again this winter. Winter driving is hard on your car. The nice clean bolts on everything are now rusty and harder to remove than before. I pulled up next to a parking pass machine, there were those cement posts and a mound of ice/snow, damn if my car did not slide sideways into the pole adding a nice dent and yellow scratch. If you do you own maintenance it more of a pain in the winter. On the other hand it's fun to drive you car and you will see few P-cars on the road w/ you.
I (finally) put my Blizzaks on yesterday and I will drive every day until I swap them back to the P-Zeros (which were waaaaay more worn out than I realised - two new rears for next season).
With all that weight over the rear tires, good grippy tready winter rubber - ITS A BLAST!
My C4 with Blizzaks is the best car that I have driven in Chicago winters. Spray the salt and crap off every week, and the car will look like new in Spring.
I got all excited whan I read the first 2/3 of the thread title. I thought Phil G. was going to throw caution (and hibernation) to the wind and drive his C4S this winter. But alas, when I came to the words "here in Virginia" I knew it wasn't Phil''s thread. Too bad!
That ^ was fun though!
I drive all winter here in MN, but the salt does make me cringe. Suggest a clear-bra ASAP before winter to help with the sand kicked up by other cars. Running Blizzaks with great results. Just played around under the car (installing mufflers). The main components look great, but expect some rust on the nuts (making changing the mufflers much more fun). Only concern for me is ground clearance, so the Toyota comes out if it is a real MN storm.
PS: The heating system is the best I have ever had in a car. Very consistent. Also the seat heaters are REALLY good.
This thread makes my head hurt.
I put my car to bed yesterday for the winter. I think I heard the battery laughing at me when I turned off the engine ....
It rains maybe 15 days a year in Tucson. It's projected to rain over thanksgiving weekend... &*#^#!!
Having just washed and waxed it, should I drive my car or leave it protected in the garage while it rains?
Flame away
, but know I did 'put in my time' in Michigan Winters. If I sill lived in Michigan, I'd say drive the car year around, enjoy it, its going to depreciate one way or the other. Life is short, if its sunny in Vermont in January, take it for a spin.
