On the other hand since my tires will need replacing after this season anyway I thought about just going with an entirely new wheel and tire setup and dropping a few pounds in the process.

My car is Silver Targa and I did mine Black/Chrome, which is a metallic dark grey but changes a little in the Sun.

I have a set of 18” 997 turbo knock offs that were on when I bought the car that were quickly changed to a set from Wheel Dynamics.

On the first set, I also forgot to have them mask off the mating surface between wheel and rotor which I also recommend.

The first set I had done, the center bore didn't turn out to be an issue but with the center cap area, I had to remove material to make the caps fit correctly.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have the stock boring gray wheels on my car and I would like to have the turbo wheels I see so often as in this image. I have had several chances to buy them at reasonable prices but seem to either not have the money at the time or they sell before I buy them.
So with spring now just around the corner I have a ton of parts to install on my car.
I am thinking about what to do about the stock wheels.
Do I leave them be and hold out until the wheels I want surface again?
I am also having serious thoughts of having them powder coated. This raises questions of color. My immediate thought is matte black powder coat which I can have done for $500 plus the price of having the still good rubber removed and then reinstalled after being coated.
SO TO THE POINT-
Have any of you guys gone the powder coated wheels route?
How did they turn out and how are they holding up?
Id really like more ideas on color if you can help with some ideas I would be great full.
I am attaching an image of the same color car as mine with the turbo wheels I want.
I am also attaching an image of my car with the stick wheels.
My car is silver.
On these cars I am a fan of matte black or dark bronze wheels. One thing you can try is to get some PlastiDip in your choice of color and try it. PlastiDip is amazing stuff and you could probably just use that, but if you like the results and want to powder coat then you just peel off the PlastiDip and go for powder coating. You dont even have to remove the tires to try this. Good Luck!
For what it's worth I think black wheels look terrible on these cars. There's not a huge amount of difference between an intentionally-matte-black wheel and a silver wheel that has tons of brake dust caked on it due to neglect. Black is slimming too, so it tends to make the wheels look smaller. So matte black wheels look small and dirty, especially on a light-colored car. On a black car there's a little more of a case for doing everything dark. Black wheels will also make your tires look dingy most of the time, since it takes a lot of cleaning and dressing to keep them as dark as the wheels, so they're going to look kind of gray/brown/dirty next to the very dark black wheel. Light-colored wheels make the tires look clean and black without having to try. But it's your car, do whatever you want! It only needs to look good to you, and if you ask style advice online you're going to get a million different opinions.
I did the plastic spray on wheels , two different colors One left one right. Decided on what I liked and then had powder coated . My car is Silver Targa and I did mine Black/Chrome, which is a metallic dark grey but changes a little in the Sun.
Look great
PS my powder coating cost $440 for (4) and I would go to several and ask to look at there work and do they do wheels often, also pay cash always better deal.
Hey Brian,
That's a tough one that I fought too. I didn't like the silver either and one wheel had a little "previous to me" curb rash. I went the powder coating route and I don't regret it. I found a local guy that would do each wheel for $75, including curb rash repair. He is great! I have to get some more stuff to him/Traeger BBQ is next
Anyways, that is cheap in my book and his quality was good. He talked me into the matte black, but I wish I had gone the shiny look instead for my car. I think with the silver, it's a toss up to preference. I am kinda bold, so I may get another set and have them powdercoated in something bright like safety orange or something to make it a little fun. I am a safety trainer by trade, so I am always dressed in Hi-vis apparel.
Powder coating the wheels, that was the easy part. Getting the tires on/off was another stupid story, oops, I mean valuable learning lesson. I learned that the turbo twists are one of the only few rims that use
special
valve stems that no tire place will have in stock ( and none of the tire stores/auto parts stores will work/adapt to the rims!!!!!!) and your local Porsche dealer stocks only 1 valve stem. How fricking stupid is that? LOL. Oh well, I know how next day air works now---you pay for it! Amazon Prime would be better
The frustrating part is when you have your car on blocks sitting in the carport for all the neighbors to see for 2 weeks, get the rims back and you just find out the original valve stems are wasted.
Also, if you go the powder coating route, make sure the guy has done rims and knows his stuff. Apparently, according to the tire shop that put the tires on/off, many local powder coaters don't do a heavy enough coat and it doesn't hold up well. I also found out that 9/10 powder coating places won't touch rims anymore. Apparently "we are too picky". I think mine came out just fine.
My indy just offered me his 19" Lobster rims (black and shiny/pretty with really sticky tires) and under the great advice of this forum and it's great members I walked away from them and will enjoy what I have.
Hope this helps.
I don't think the wheels are all the boring, I think they have actually aged very well. That being said I have been debating on doing something different with them myself. My wheel faces are in decent shape, a chip or two but no curbage. The barrels are beat though, even getting extremely aggressive with cleaners, magic eraser and ultimately 0000 steel wool they are stained badly. I've thought about just buying an entirely different set of wheels but I've also considered powder coating. Powder coating should hold up just fine if done properly. I was thinking about going with a gold color like on the Porsche crest. I think it would look good on my car being blue metallic that is dark in the shade but very bright in the light. That being said your car is silver which is pretty neutral so you could mix it up with colors. I am not a fan of black personally, looks good sometimes but isn't my first choice. A charcoal or gun metal color would look good on silver. On the other hand since my tires will need replacing after this season anyway I thought about just going with an entirely new wheel and tire setup and dropping a few pounds in the process.
Do a WTB thread in the market place that you are wanting the 997 turbo wheels. Don't settle for what you don't really want.
I wanted to marry a super model but settled for my wife. Now Kate Upton is married to someone else. Don't Make the same mistake!!

Hi,
I have a set of 18” 997 turbo knock offs that were on when I bought the car that were quickly changed to a set from Wheel Dynamics. Your wheels (I assume they are 18”) are the wheels my car had when originally purchased and I was planning to reunite original parts eventually... (i am still dreaming 996’s will eventually pick up in value someday and if so keeping the car unmodified with stock parts become an essential quality to increase value).
So we could trade if you are interested, my wheels are not in great shape and would need to be re-finished, we have in Montreal many reputable shops that do that so I could get an estimate for you.. the Porsche centre caps are not great as well and you would need to get new ones,
and to make a perfect fit, I would have add spacers (have not figured out exact size required)
I see you have Massachusetts plates... so I am 5-6 hours away
so this maybe you lucky day!
I agree a heavy coat is good but a word of caution. Make sure the powder coating place masks off the center bore and the area where the center cap is supposed to fit flush. The first set I had done, the center bore didn't turn out to be an issue but with the center cap area, I had to remove material to make the caps fit correctly. On the first set, I also forgot to have them mask off the mating surface between wheel and rotor which I also recommend.
We don't have much weather here but the first set I had done are now over ten years old now and look as good as when I picked them up.
