Seems used prices on Ebay for stock headlights are ~$600 - $900, OP could probably get away with just changing the one side, then wet sanding / coating both and they should match pretty close.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Proud new owner of a 1999 996 and the front lights are an issue. Pretty sure that the lights are OEM as they are marked Bosch. However the passenger light lens is burnt and my mechanic tells me that the previous owner likely installed a higher wattage bulb and that was the result? If they are both indeed OEM do I try and hunt down a clean used passenger side light or do I opt for a new matched set? I must admit that I love the look of some aftermarket sets from Aliexpress and the like. How is the fit and reliability? Any suggestions would be very welcomed.

POST 3Original post

If you do replace, Ill buy the driver side! Same problem you have but opposite side.

POST 4Original post

Single lights are easy enough to find on eBay. I think keeping a stock OEM light is the way to go. Find a matching light, clean them up and they'll look like new. I don't have any experiences w/ aftermarket, but I have heard less than glowing reviews about some of them.

POST 5Original post

Stick with OEM units. Also your front bumper is looks to be an aftermarket unit? Gives 996.2 aerokit look on the 996.1 body.

POST 6Original post

I bought OEM 2003 Boxster headlights for my 99 before switching back to the original ambers. The Boxster headlights were much cheaper than the 911 units (around 1K for the set) and Im sure most people couldnt tell the difference.

I didn't think there was an actual difference? Seems used prices on Ebay for stock headlights are ~$600 - $900, OP could probably get away with just changing the one side, then wet sanding / coating both and they should match pretty close.

So you're saying I can buy OEM 2003 Boxster headlights for my 03 C2 and they'll plug right in and work perfectly?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 17739150

No They will only work on the .1 996s (99-01)

POST 11Original post

OP - Been my experience “best”, “inexpensive”, “aftermarket” don’t do “well”, “work correctly”, “last long time”. OE or OEM for the lights.

If you want cost effective - buy 986 headlights like philbert996 suggested. can get new oem units for around $1k for both. the difference between 986/996 headlights is very minor (inner reflector striped vs crosshatched) https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...et-98663113214 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...et-98663113114

POST 16Original post

The big question is do the current headlight work correctly? If so, get your mind off blemishes and on having fun driving the best sports car on the planet. Btw... Porsche don't have blemishes, they have patina.

Thank you for the link! Odd how it does not list the 1999 996 as a correct fit on either link though? Were all Boxster and 996 lights interchangeable ?

POST 18Original post

What front bumper do you have? you can replace the burnt part, but you need to take apart the whole lens.

The website states that they are NOT compatible with my vehicle? Would any of you kind folks chime in an verify the actual fit and compatibility please?

So if the car works correctly, ignore aesthetics. Solid advice.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well aesthetic aside, could anyone confirm that the 986 will fit my '99 996 based on the links above? Thank you kindly!

POST 26Original post

Can you expound on what you mean by had done by retrofit labs? Did they just install that kit or did they refurbish the whole light? I got most of the yellowing out of my lights, but theres a little bit on the inside Id like to address.

POST 27Original post

No I had a 3rd set that were excellent and polished to which I added the retrofit system that’s why I’m selling the others but there is a rennlister that’s a us rep for them that I believe will rebuild your lights
