Suggestion

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and test fuel pressure , then shut down engine and monitor gauge, if the pressure drops in a matter of minutes, this will cause long crank times on restart.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've noticed the last couple of days that car doesn't start on the 1st trial. It now takes 2 or 3 trials for it to start. I did change the battery last year. Any thoughts to why it won't start on 1st trial? The engine cranks but only starts after 2 or 3 tries, any thoughts are appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Does it feel like it drops in voltage when attempting to start? Some have reported crank angle sensor issues causing start problems Could be: - Electrical (battery, starter, starter cable) usually heat related - Mechanical

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info, voltage seems to be at 10v when cranking, this is what I see on the gauge on the dash. Will bring the car in to be looked at as well.

POST 4Original post

Battery at 10V is first suspect. A bad Y-cable is second suspect. Check voltage drop at battery and jumper point in engine bay, then drop between jumper point and starter. A weak CPS could be another suspect, but usually results in a complete no start.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your help. On a positive note, car stated 1st shot this morning, but will still have it looked at.

POST 6Original post

Also , if you have good crank speed, but have long crank times , consider fuel pressure could be an issue. On 996.1 that has a fuel return system, there are two check valves, one in fuel pump and one in fuel pressure regulator. If the check valves do not hold the fuel pressure for at least an hour after engine is shut down, it can cause bubbles to form in the fuel rail at the injectors, causing long crank times on re-start. On 996.2 with the returnless system , the check valves/regulator are all inside the fuel tank, but it still needs to maintain fuel pressure for at least an hour after shut down to keep bubbles from forming in the fuel rails. Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and test fuel pressure , then shut down engine and monitor gauge, if the pressure drops in a matter of minutes, this will cause long crank times on restart.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the detailed response, will have my mechanic verify this too!
