Get out there and test drive both a 996 and a 987 with a 6 speed first.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys
I have a 02 996 3.6 Carrera2 tiptronic with IPD plenum, k&n intake, and catback exhaust. I got a friend who is selling his 06 cayman s fully loaded but tiptronic too. Every time I drive my car. I feel why I bought a tip. I should have bought a stick instead. Anyway, I drove his car once and I think the cayman s's tiptronic is more responsive than my 02 996 also cayman s feels more solid and rigid and of course newer interior. Do you guys think it's stupid for me to get a tiptronic cayman s from already owning a tip 996 3.6? I live in Taiwan so it's very difficult for me to find a stick shift or it's almost impossible. Traffic here is extremely horrible and the roads are much narrower compare with states. Also I know Porsche will come up with a new dual clutch tranny next year. What do you guys think?
I will post pictures of my 996 C2.
I love the Cayman myself, and if you need a Tip in Taiwan traffic that's understandable.
Don't know the exact timing of dual clutch in Porsche, but it's awesome in my A3.
But your 996 sounds great, so why not just stay with it?
Would love to see some 996 pics around the island.
I'd keep your car until the new DCTs come out. I'd bet that even if you got the Cayman, you'd always wish that you had a 911. The caymans are pretty sweet.
when a person on the street is asked or thinks about a "porsche", what model do they think of first? boxster? cayenne? cayman? or 911?
i'm not being derisive about the cayman, i'm sure it's a fine car, but i think that the 911 is the flagship product that porsche produces and if you already have a very fine example of a 911, why go to any other model?
part of owning (let's be honest here) a high maintenance sports car is prestige and, imho, the 911 has more prestige (owing to its history) than other models of porsche.
i like to describe the 911 (and especially the 911 turbo) as that guy with the "model" type looks who also happens to have an MBA from harvard and is a former navy SEAL. he's just a bit better than the other guys in every measurable way. i think that the 911 is "that guy" in the automobile world.
I love the Cayman too but I would stick with what you've got (it beats the hell out of all those scooters!!!) I hope those mirrors fold up though - those streets are hella narrow!
thank you guys for all the inputs. yeah nothing can replace the 911 unless it's a new 997. Which I can't afford currently. If I really want I will take a huge lost on my 996 for that cayman s. I am talking about HUGE! I may be complain' after owning a cayman s and wish damn I have that 911 ( 996 or 997 ) When I reach my rear seats there's nothing. LOL I am sure it's a better handling car with more modern options and way much nicer interior. I guess I will hold on to my 996 for a while and enjoy more of it before I change to another p car. Mean while It's time to get new suspension PSS10 or KWV3. Also I feel like upgrading the brakes. We're talking about 6k at least for those.
It's better than loosing lots of money by getting rid of the 996 anyway.
The thing is with my C2 It's getting aged and definitely not in a better shape than the 06 cayman s. Since my C2 is a 02 I will begin to have more trouble. More things gotta be maintenance and repair. Oh well. I wish I have the money to buy a brand new one. duh!
Actually, I am just worry about the reliability of my 02 996. It's my daily driver. Things such as rattle inside the interior, Things starting to worn out or break. Those things kinda **** me off once in a while. Brakes are stars to fade, suspension needs to be replaced, etc. Did I say it's a 6 year old car? Oh well, I will see what's up. I am just concern more $ will need to be spend if I keep my 996 just due to maintenance and repairs. By the time I wanna sell. I'd be a retard and spend so much just to keep it alive!
the avg speed of traffic in taiwan is < then speed at which i back out from my driveway. it doesn't matter if you drive CGT or hyundai, both will be above the speed limit before you cross the intersection. so just pick the look that you like.
i finally got out of there from my 10 day visit. talk about humid. i wonder how i grew up there.
food was GOOD.
+1
If you want to be one of the "sheeple" and drive a car just because of what others may think keep the 911. If you have confidence in yourself and your decisions drive the one that makes
you
happy (which ever that may be).
However, it sounds like you have tip vs. 6-speed questions that you really need to resolve before you pick a new Porsche. Get out there and test drive both a 996 and a 987 with a 6 speed first. Then decide which you really like better.
I personally can't stand the "tips" in these cars. Every time I get a dealer loaner (they always give tips) I am disappointed in the tips. I don't know why bt they really seem to suck the life and personality out of these cars (just my opinion).
Good luck with yor choice.
food is good
chick is not.
too demanding.
spends too much of my money
and they are all too white. sometime i think they are dead being so fluorescent white. they need to get some real tan.
one of my biz partners has a cayman S tip over in dubai, loves it as it isn't too common (everyone there is 911 turbo oriented), and definitely makes heads turn as it has more of an exotic silhouette to your average person's eye. Thing is like a go-kart, will ride very firmly compared to 996 stock vs. stock. I wouldn't go from 996 to regular cayman, there is a serious power gap, but the S is very quick.
I personally am over driving manual cars in super high density cities, and I've had the pleasure with either hand in NY, SF, LA, London, Mumbai, Bangalore, BKK, Tokyo, Singapore, HK etc., but you should at least try it out for your purposes in Taiwan. I'm sure you have at least one friend willing to swap with you for a week, drive their manual 996 or cayman around town just as you do your car, in traffic, during rush hour, parallel parking up a hill, etc. Or rent one. If you still love it after a week, then do it! If you don't drive it regularly or during the day, then I see no reason why you wouldn't like the manual, and some people don't really mind it even in really terrible urban traffic.
Right, Boxster now has the SAME engine (2007 and up) but is priced at $4k less.
$4k less cause it has a drop-top? Gotta love it, people think the Cayman is so much better. Ignorant people make great marketing possible.
