Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Inspect by porsche (their official inspection checklist, $250-$400)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'sign of the prior owners driving techniques' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check other signs of wear' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

About the clutch, replacing the clutch that soon is probably a bad sign of the prior owners driving techniques.

Suggestion
Tom, don't forget the engine change for the 2000 model year (I think) from 3.4L to 3.6L.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Still looking, but now that summer is winding down, the rush to buy is gone, which is a Good Thing.
Found these three and would like your feedback on them. CarFax didn't find any problems for any of them. Naturally, I'll do a PPI.
1999 C4, 37726 mi Nav/Supple/Litronics, To be relisted on eBay (didn't meet reserve at $32.5k)
2000 C2, 32000 mi $40.8k, no outstanding options
2001 C2, 37975 mi $46k, Technic pkg/FullLeather Warranty to 2/2009 or 60k
I really like the idea of a C4, but the 2001 with the warranty is appealing too. (How much is an aftermarket warranty for two years? $1500 to $2000?)
Let the comments begin!
And "Thanks" in advance.
tom
I _knew_ I'd forget something: the 2001 also has a new engine & clutch, done 10k miles ago.
Mike: I saw your ad the day you put it up. But I have my heart set on blue (although Seal Gray is vvveeerrrrry nice too!)
What do you think about the price for the 2001?
tom
The '99 is the lightest of the 99/2000/2001 all of which have the 3.4L engine = more nimble. Try calculating the power/weight ratio to see what I mean.
Also, the 99 will be the cheapest to buy too - that too with the most options !! Looks like a no brainer to me if the condition of the '99 is good.
About the clutch, replacing the clutch that soon is probably a bad sign of the prior owners driving techniques. Check for other signs of wear. Clutches can go from 10K to 70/80K miles depending on driving practices.
Also, please have the car inspected by porsche (their official inspection checklist, $250-$400). Its not a silver bullet but its DEFINITELY worth the money.
Can't comment on the prices, but the 01 has a questionable history if it got a new motor and clutch at 10k. Maybe nothing, but maybe an indication of abuse.
Also, warranty is great but do some research on the warranty company (09 and 60k does not seem like CPO, but aftermarket warranty). Some warranty co's are much better than others so try a search to get opinions on the specific warranty company to see if it truly is a benefit.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
Sorry if I wasn't clear: the engine and clutch were changed at around 28k miles (38k-10k). Is that still too 'young'?
Ah, here's a clue. CarFax says that there's two owners and the first was a lease until 28.8k! So the first owner might have missed a shift or something.
And I'm pretty sure it's not CPO. CarFax lists the service contract starting on 2/2005, at 33,900. So it's a 4 year aftermarket plan.
I'm interested enough to go and check it out. I'll find out which warranty company it's with and if this owner knows anything more about the engine/clutch change. And the trouble with the 99 is that it will be on eBay, so I don't really know what his reserve price is.
Thanks for arming me with good questions!
