I also had to use a flat head screwdriver on the outer ring of the ignition assembly to manually retract the "spear" which locks the steering wheel.

I think I'm going to extend the RENNLIST 10% off code past April as it's been getting used pretty good in the past few weeks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2001 996 TT - Over the weekend, I was left stranded and had to get towed home during Cleveland's first nice weekend.
Anyways, I had put the key in the ignition and it turned over once and then the key went "loose". It was essentially "free turning" either direction - if that makes any sense...and the car thought the key was still in the ignition when it wasn't. Also steering wheel wouldn't lock.
I was hoping it was just going to be an electrical ignition switch replacement. So I picked up one from local auto parts store, but I wasn't able to get the switch aligned with the shaft coming out of the assembly. I tried turning the key from up top to see if it would line up, but the shaft didn't seem to be connected so I wasn't able to align it.
So does this mean at this point I need to get a whole new ignition assembly? Or is there something else I can try?
Sounds like you need the new Porsche ignition switch/lock assy. (Factory part only - PN 996.347.017.07 Fits Boxster 97 - 04, 996 98 - 05, GT3 03 - 05 )
DIY instructions covered here.

You can try removing the *lock barrel from the switch to see if there is a pin/shaft/etc. that you can fix.
You will need your key and a strong paper clip. Read through the attached thread.
That looks like a new problem, not the more common broken plastic "pin" in the electrical part of the switch.. Take more pics of the broken parts when you get a chance. And cut back on the steroids!
And I guess talk to Jason.
Got the parts really quickly from Jason @ Warehouse 33 (great pricing!).
Did the repair this morning and it was pretty straightforward with the DIY from Renntech. It's all good now. Didn't take new photos, but it just looked like the cam plates that interface with the ignition key cylinder just disintegrated and caused it to jam.
I also had to use a flat head screwdriver on the outer ring of the ignition assembly to manually retract the "spear" which locks the steering wheel. Other than that, it was pretty easy.
Tranman well done and thanks for posting. My ignition kind of stuck on the start of the turn slightly about 6 months back so I sprayed a spot of penetrating oil into it. Been fine since.
Tranman glad you got it and are happy, let me know if you need anything else!
