You can change the little triangle sections on the corner of the lamps to clear or smoke but your still stuck with the orange section on the main section of the bottom lip because there is no way to remove the orange.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Boxster forum is as dead as doornails, so I figured I throw this out for the dogs here. I'm early in the sorting-out phase of my 2002, not wanting to spend money on anything frivilious, but the lamps haunted me. I got some 3M Black reflective tape, which reflects white, and did the best placement and trimming I could do. Be merciful. IMG_2126.jpg It has a light diamond texture, which actually looks nice. Thin as paper, it looks like it belongs there. Tape appears lighter than it is, pitch black. Tiny crease from a fold, I ran out of pristine material. Now I have more and can re-do it, although it's difficult to see in person. IMG_2166.jpg With a flash, it lights up white... IMG_2170.jpg Plenty of yellow light for the turn signal come through. (I think the white backing of the tape reflects some extra amberlight back through) IMG_2248.jpg IMG_2247.jpg w/flash IMG_2249.jpg

POST 4Original post

Hmmm, if you want to get rid of the orange piece completely, why don't you just tape that part completely, remove the lightbulbs and then mount some small diode flashing lights in the grills? I think that would look a lot better and the cost is small as well. Maybe it would look nice if you also taped the surrounding areas around the headlight and foglight? I think so, but it is easy to try out the best option... Robert

POST 6Original post

Just get a set of clear one's if it bothers you so much? If you look around on Craigslist or ebay you can always find someone selling a set. (Or buy OEM clear off Pelican type sites)

POST 7Original post

wow guys - I think the point of the thread was he over came his dislike with a solution OTHER than replacing them I for one am trying for the first time in my life to be supportive!! help me out welcome the boxster dude to the 996 forum, he says he bored over there - its not like he bought a GT2 wing and put it on his boxster

POST 8Original post

I think you need to love your Porsche as it came. Just about every mod I have ever seen for 986/996 headlights looks either lame or rice. If you are driving it fast enough no one should see your headlights...

POST 9Original post

I've seen a few threads where people use dark window tinting material to cover up part of the headlights. This seems like it might be a reasonably priced option, especially for a dark-colored car. Personally, I like the look of the 996/986 headlights in their pure, unmolested form.

I guess we have learned something here: Do what you want and don't ask for other peoples opinions unless you can handle their input good or bad. The OP isn't upset about this are they? The concept isn't the issue - it's the material - tape. In my environment it would last a few weeks at best. Tearing out the orange from the inside only works on 2000 or 2001 models - 1999's as I found out have the orange impregnated right into the outer acrylic. You can change the little triangle sections on the corner of the lamps to clear or smoke but your still stuck with the orange section on the main section of the bottom lip because there is no way to remove the orange. I 'get' the fact that he doesn't like them - I didn't either - but 'masking' it either this way or by buying the oval stick on (yup - tape again) template product still in my opinion, isn't an optimum look. The other issue is that masking the signal light reduces it's visibility to on coming drivers and *may* violate vehicle safety codes in your state or province. Just saying.

POST 11Original post

Personally I'd replace them with something like this. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1998-2004-Por...item27c03dd465

POST 12Original post

It's not really my cup of tea but it's not offensive either. I much prefer it to the LEDs (sorry jumper) which I do like on new cars but, as mods, I often find make older cars just look older. Most importantly, if you like it then that's all that matters and there are a lot of people looking for a simple clear corner-like mod like this to change/alter the appearance of their headlights. I guess I fall into Dennis' camp when it comes to the headlights. And, after so many years it always surprises me that it's still an issue with so many people. Btw, welcome to the 996 forum! Hang around for a while and ignore the grumps among us (me included...sometimes). -Eric

POST 13Original post

To each his own but I Like the stock 996 headlights. There are 996 components that can stand an upgrade/update/replacement, but to my mind the headlights don't make that (fairly long) list. The 996's headlights were on the last Porsche to win LeMans outright. That makes them good enough for my ride.

POST 14Original post

I am not complety sure I like the leds ligthed up but for yellow turn signals it's ok. I don't really think it make the car look older though. There is the OEM clear lights that are available as well but the are 750 a light. Here is another some other photos if them.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 9936871

I was just thinking the same thing!

POST 16Original post

why did you buy the car it you hate the way it looks so much you have to use tape to hide part of it? Good or bad i personally love the non oval lights, i think it was a bold design risk and not something that is likely to happen again.

POST 17Original post

Thanks for sharing. I wonder what colors of tints would make different colors out of the orange for getting devious. Green for a result would seem wild enough.

POST 18Original post

I'd be worried about "hiding" part of my front turn signals when it's important for other drivers coming from the opposite direction to see them.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. I'll check back in later. I'm not sure all people realize it's BLACK reflective tape, primo 3M that is as thin as paper, and weatherproof. That's the problem with tint products, they are not for outside use. I'm happy for now. Thanks for the link on the replacements. idk how to even remove the lamps yet! Had the car for about a month. I grew up in a string of dad's 914s, so the Box was easy to acclimate to. I have my share of Euro cars behind me, and also have a 2010 Tiguan 6M w/APR on A3 springs. That vehicle has merit itself. Anyway, I wanted a convert, so a 911 was sub-optimal for me, esp considering the premium price. btw- plenty of amber light comes through, sort of the same rectangle shape as the VW...

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh, crap! $900 for replacement lamps! My mod cost $9!

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's ok. Just to say that it does look better in person. I don't think anyone who's not an enthusiast would even notice. :0) ...and you have to say, is it better than OE (maybe) or is it better than a $1000 set of ecodes? (no)

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 9938315

Lol! There's probably a reason for that! jmo

POST 25Original post

I think it is an improvement over stock and for $9 bucks it is both low risk and removable if you don't like it.

POST 26Original post

I think stock looks better. To each their own though.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just give me a chance to get a good long-distance pic. It might be something like this... IMG_2121-1-1.jpg verses...(the far passenger side already has the blackout, fwiw) IMG_2131s.jpg

POST 28Original post

Although I'm personally a huge believer in maintaining the stock look, if you insist on going down this road you may as well know about these guys ... http://www.strosek.de/strosek_2006.php The website is lousy with flash so you need to click on the 996 button to get it to work. These guys can (cosmetically) turn your 996 into a 997. If thats what you want.

POST 30Original post

Nice boxster - I think the intent is good - I would suggest finding a way to get the tape to line up with the hood? Anyway if you don't end up liking it in a few weeks you can remove it then. Btw tinted vinyl film is designed for outside use and can last ten plus years

POST 31Original post

With all do respect, I think the lights looked fine stock. There is nothing wrong with the amber lens. Why cheapen them with black tape? Nice car but peel the tape off, JMHO.

POST 32Original post

Wasn't this thread 2 pages??

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 9947619

The hoodline goes right across just below the amber/clear margin of the lamp housing. I had to go well below that with the mask in order to get enough of the amber to shine through, and not only cast enough light, but to also be proportional as well. It came out to about 1" of amber, split evenly between the amber/clear line and the hood line. A bit of contour towards the edge, down to 5/8" or so. It follows the line of the lens refractors, like 4-5 lines from the top. I think I nailed it. The amber ~sort~ of has the same shape as 991 taillights. (ducks) IMG_2165.jpg Right?! http://www.wickedmotorworks.com/img/4511_IMG_7616.JPG

POST 36Original post

A+ for effort but not my cup of tea. There are some covers like these if you dont want to do the whole light. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CARBON-FIBER...&forceRpt=true

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. Only because I have a dark, near-black, colour is why I can get away with this corny black-dark grey mask scheme. It obviously wouldn't work as well on other backgrounds. The fact it has an iridescent finish gives it some depth and helps it blend into the "lens" theme. Again, better looking in person. There is actually a number of different colours of tape, but I don't think it'd have a chance in another colour scheme. Seal Grey would look excellent w/this black.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
