Based on other suggestions, I brought it in to my local indy to get the brake fluid flushed and adjust the shifter cables to hopefully remedy the issue and just received this back (remember, the gear box oil was just changed by this indy two months ago):
Leading evidence: 'Check gear box oil and it looked bad' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust shifter cables' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

How does gearbox oil go from being brand new (owner had it replaced/refilled two months ago at same mechanic) to "BAD.

We changed the fluid and are now about to adjust shifter cables after lunch.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Assuming a properly filled gearbox with the proper fluid and even assuming the the internals are disintegrating how would that affect the color of the oil that fast?

I completely understand how and why engine oil changes color etc due to the combustion process by products but the gearbox is a sealed unit, the only thing affecting the oil would be heat and metal particles if something is falling apart.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been having difficulty getting into 1st gear and reverse on my '99 C2 with 84K miles for several months. I started a previous thread and ended up having the transmission fluid changed two months ago. The fluid change seemed to help for a short amount of time.
The issue is that when I am at a complete stop it is sometimes very difficult or impossible to shift into 1st or reverse with the clutch full depressed. This happens either when cold or fully warmed up. I have had several situations at a stop light where I can't get into 1st gear without significant effort.
A suggestion was made to slightly push the shifter into 1st gear before depressing the clutch. This has worked very well and is now my standard for getting into first gear but I'm afraid I might be doing some other damage using this method.
Based on other suggestions, I brought it in to my local indy to get the brake fluid flushed and adjust the shifter cables to hopefully remedy the issue and just received this back (remember, the gear box oil was just changed by this indy two months ago):
Fluids are bled, checked the gear box oil and it looked BAD. Very, very dark and looks like could be internal issues. We changed the fluid and are now about to adjust shifter cables after lunch. If no change, it would be either hydraulics issue or internal gearbox issue. Our tech thinks internal.
Cost to fix that could be about $1500 for syncros on up.
Any thoughts?
Most recent update from indy:
Well the cables are adjusted and one was decently out of spec. If feels pretty good, I would not say like new, but not horrible.
You have a few options:
1) Pick up as is.
2) We replace the slave cylinder – 1hr of labor and a $130 part (would be done by 3pm tomorrow)
3) We take trans out – I really don’t think this is necessary at this time.
I am going to have him replace the slave cylinder while it's there. He does not believe this will fix the issue but will at least rule this out before anything more drastic. I will get it back tomorrow and see if it feels any better. His biggest concern is how much the gear oil deteriorated over a few thousand miles.
It is not a good idea to even slightly try to move the gear lever into 1st with the clutch not fully depressed. That can only accelerate wear on at least the shifter forks.
In some cars when it is difficult to engage 1st what can help is to first shift into 2nd then back into 1st. In some cars while in 2nd letting the clutch out just emough to move the car a bit is needed. I had to do this from day one with another car and up until I sold the car with over 120K miles on it.
Generally with the engine/tranny up to temp with the car on level ground and the clutch fully depressed one should be able to move the shift lever from neutral to any gear or from any gear to any another other gear without any protest from the transmission.
If there is a protest generally the source is a clutch hydraulic system that needs to be flushed/bled though if signs the clutch hydraulic system is bad then that needs to be addressed.
How does gearbox oil go from being brand new (owner had it replaced/refilled two months ago at same mechanic) to "BAD. Very, very dark" within two months? I completely understand how and why engine oil changes color etc due to the combustion process by products but the gearbox is a sealed unit, the only thing affecting the oil would be heat and metal particles if something is falling apart. Assuming a properly filled gearbox with the proper fluid and even assuming the the internals are disintegrating how would that affect the color of the oil that fast? Even if the OP drove the wheels off the car and put an insane amounf of mileage on the car (unlikely in two months) I don't get it. Most cars with manual transmissions often go their entire lifespan without changing or even checking the gearbox oil.
You have a wnderful way with words Walter which I aggree with and give a grade +1 lol...
I would have said.. Load of bollux, did he fill the gear box with Guiness the drunken B*****d? hahaha
Does the oil have any shiny metal, or anything on the magnet? I agree, there is no way it should be dirty from two months. Are you sure it was changed before? Is this a quality shop? Jeez why doesnt everyone do their own work on their car to prevent this?
