I'm curious how they get the new key coded correctly and why they can't just adjust the old key the same way?

Had the dealer do the new coding, and they've called up and said that the FOB on the key needs to be replaced with a new one because it didn't take to the new coding.

I had to replace my control box under the driver's seat which also contains the coding for the alarm system.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had to replace my control box under the driver's seat which also contains the coding for the alarm system. Had the dealer do the new coding, and they've called up and said that the FOB on the key needs to be replaced with a new one because it didn't take to the new coding. He said this is a common occurrence. I'm curious how they get the new key coded correctly and why they can't just adjust the old key the same way? Does anyone have any experience with this?

POST 2Original post

The alarm box has to be told the key code. They probably either don't have the hex code for your old key, or else don't know how to code the alarm unit for the key.

POST 3Original post

I have a similar problem with a new key that the dealer couldn't program correctly with the Memory control unit under the seat. They advised me that the memory control unit was faulty and needed to be replaced, about $1000 BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE that it will resolve the issue. Yet my old original key still works fine with whatever programming. I said No Thanks. I don't want to pay for their guesses and experimentation.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm.... I know when it comes down to it I'm at their mercy on this matter. Truthfully I'll just be happy to get my car back. What should have been a 60 minute job has turned into my car being gone for a solid week. Ugh. I would hope the dealer would know how to program the box for the key, my guess is that they'll say since the key is from 2000 there's some technical problem or they no longer have the tool. Doesn't that seem ridiculous though? It's a hex key. Hmm... I'm suppose to pick the car up at 2pm, I'll post back their response.

POST 5Original post

keys cannot be reprogramed to a new alarm contol without the origianl key tag code.

POST 6Original post

Did you give them the hex code (12 bytes, 24 digits) for your key when you dropped the car off? If not, they could not have even attempted to program the controller for the old key.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't. I just dropped off the car with the keys and said 'here you go'. Thanks for your guys' responses. Sounds like there's not really any choice but to get the new key.

POST 8Original post

Be sure to ask them for the key code (it'll be on the tag) and keep it in a safe place, either for your use or for an eventual future owner.
