Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Is get the car as low as possible for removal of the last few engine bolts, and use a floor jack with proper support, I used 3/4 in.
Leading evidence: 'Use 3/4 in' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pinched wire caused by my install' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check spark plug tube leaks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I used a trans jack, floor jack, and a 20-ton bottle jack to get the right angle to stab my trans in the '87.

Update on the engine drop, would have posted earlier but had a pesky Cam 2 sensor alarm which turned out to be a pinched wire caused by my install.

Suggestion
Change the spark plugs, serpentine belt, oil separator(if it's superseded), clean the throttle body, install new oil filler tube(if it's superceded) and you'd be good to go!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

sitting on my garage floor for a clutch kit and a RMS,any other suggestions in the area of preventative maintenance I should do while the engine is out???
Consider the air/oil seperator. I had my engine out and within 1,000 miles of putting it back in, the seperator went. I believe it is only about $100. It created an incredible mess on the top of my engine and cost about $1,000 to have it installed. My car was a tip and the dealer recommends removing the engine to replace the seperator. I had an independant shop do it and they were able to do the job without removing the engine. I should have paid the dealer the extra money to do it right. I still had oil on top of the engine when I sold the car 9,000 miles later.
Spark plugs are also easy to do with the engine out.
DIY gone bad..The footprint of my scissor lift would not allow a straight up shot with a tranmission jack. so could not get the proper alignment for the tranny install.
use a bolt to thread into the engine, cut the head off the bolt and use it as a guide to put the tranny in... works pretty good...
Since the engine is out, how does the coolant tank look. If its yellow... well you never know.
Check for spark plug tube leaks. Change the spark plugs, serpentine belt, oil separator(if it's superseded), clean the throttle body, install new oil filler tube(if it's superceded) and you'd be good to go!
Care to take any pics? I'd love to see pics of the mess you have going in your garage.
I contemplated doing the eng removal myself but some how jacking that car up that high safety scared me to death. How did you do the supporting etc.
Forgot to add do not forget to add new throwout bearing for clutch and for 13 bucks change out the throwout bearing sleeve it rides on, it is bolted to the tranny with 2 bolts.
It is scary, although I'm sure there are many ways to drop the engine on a 996, my approach was/would be, whether using jack stands, scissor lift . or 2/4 post lift. Is get the car as low as possible for removal of the last few engine bolts, and use a floor jack with proper support, I used 3/4 in. plywood, drop the engine the final distance. whatever clears the car. Porsche does it this way, but has a special tool (template) that secures their engine tranny support to the floor jack.
Not easy and I had not intended to drop the engine.
9nine6 you are seriously one brave man!!!! I felt triumphant changing my own alternator... But you are in a league of your own. Nice work.
Good luck on the repairs and install.
Good for you to tackle a project hands on. No doubt this is not foreign territory for you 9NINE6, otherwise you'd be headed for trouble. My wrenching abilities will never approach yours.Good luck with your project...how long will it take you to complete?
I'm taking you guys advice for replacing the oil sep, plugs, serpit, etc parts in later in week, next Sat and/or Sun hope to complete, should be an interesting adventure.
It would be nice to see details of the reinstall, better yet photos of all the jobs you're going to do. Nothing beats photos. I think it would be awesome to see. Hint hint....
Good job, good speed and a little luck against mishaps.....
Update on the engine drop, would have posted earlier but had a pesky Cam 2 sensor alarm which turned out to be a pinched wire caused by my install.

Improvise.
I used a trans jack, floor jack, and a 20-ton bottle jack to get the right angle to stab my trans in the '87.
Oh, and a ratchet strap to hold the eng/trans to the trans jack and a 6-8 inch thick board for even more height.
if the tank is in yellow color... its prob the original tank. They are known to crack and leak. While the engine is out, it would be a lot easier to put a new one in.
