The dealer advised me that the problem is a noisy hydraulic lifter and that due to it being an isolated problem, PCNA recommends replacing all lifters to be on the safe side as it's almost impossible to locate which one knocks.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got an '01 996 C2 with a new problem. Recently, on a cold morning, I got a clacking noise from the engine. Once warmed up (approx.1 minute later) the noise disappears. The dealer advised me that the problem is a noisy hydraulic lifter and that due to it being an isolated problem, PCNA recommends replacing all lifters to be on the safe side as it's almost impossible to locate which one knocks. Problem is that as the parts are about $800 bucks, labour is in excess of $2K due to the requirement of pullling the engine to perform the work. I remember reading somewhere that there is an oil additive to eliminate or cure this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am not suggesting this, but usually when the tappet gets dirty it will not pump up instantaneously. In the past I have been told by many people to add a little ATF - because it is a detergent, and it cleans the tappet = viola. I am in no way suggesting this but it did work on small blocks in the past and was regarded as being no big deal. Maybe if this was done right before an oil change? I dunno and am not recommending it but simply relaying what has solved this prob. in the past.
I hear you about the ATF. I remember in the past using "Forte" oil additives on some old water cooled VW's and half the time they actually worked. Then again, a 1600 cc 4-banger was easily found in a scrap yard if we screwed up. Hearing all this fuss about RMB oil leaks and off-centered crankshafts really gives me goosebumps. Did the 993 engine have this bad of a rap?
993 had it's own "bad rap" as well as other 911 models. Just be glad the RMS issue is the cheapest of all the model lines individual issues. $800 and you are good to go. Looks like the newest fix (4th gen seal) is the one that might be the one to ultimately fix the seal seating. Then again, the RMS issue is really a non-issue.
