don't forget the Wizard genius installed an Ls engine into hoovies 996 and forgot to address oil starvation and the engine imploded.

I get more clicks when I use the word "eBay" in my titles next to Porsche.

Also not the first time I've heard someone recommend a boxster off 996 911 but that doesn't seem to matter these days.

He also made several statements that it's based on his experience as a repair tech.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think I could be perfectly happy in a Boxter now that I have had a 911 but if I'd started with a Boxter, there would have always been that nagging doubt that I'd bought the wrong car in order to save some money and that greener pasture would be a constant companion. Not a thing wrong with a Boxter but for me at least, nothing was going to scratch that first Porsche itch except a 911.
Bought a Boxster first, then got the itch for a 996. Kind of liked the fact there was some commonality between the two for maintenance and modification purposes. Loved them both, but for different reasons, the Boxster was definitely more balanced taking curves at speed due to the mid-engine layout, the 996 was more powerful but a little squirrely at the limit although it also had that definitive Porsche cache. Lamentably, one of them had to go so I gave the Boxster to my Daughter and Son In-law to make room for two big fat Harley Davidsons, a Night Train Softail and a Road King, they're so choice!
There's really no reason not to try them all. Every Porsche model offers a different driving experience. My very first Porsche was a 924 I bought used in 1995 (just a couple of days ago...LOL). I still have that 924, a 944 Turbo, a 986 Boxster, and the 996. They all get driven. They are all enjoyed in their own unique driving styles.
Guys like this are the reason why I resisted having a channel for years. It's the same old crap.
On YT the only people that actually get subscribers are the ones that have horrible content.
I believe the car wizard was definitely wrong about the 914. Although I've never liked the design, the fact is that auction prices for the 914 have soared. Even some of the average 914s that are heavily worn and rusted are grabbing numbers over $30,000. Super rare editions like the 914 GT are seeing auction prices well over $200,000. (see below) I'm sure there are many sitting in the barn nonfunctional, but that doesn't change what the resell values are doing on the market.
Hah...
Hoovie and Car Wizard are a hoot to watch. But you can't take them seriously. It's like watching the news thru Saturday Night Live.
Just sayin...
Agreed. Car Wizard is a cool cat and seems like a honest guy just providing his opinion. He's not entirely wrong too. You should not buy a 996 if you're not prepared to maintain in properly.
Exactly. People like Hoovie and the Car Wizard are not producing videos to help people gain a deeper understanding or learn about the technical aspects of servicing, repairing, or maintaining these cars. These videos are for the most part POV entertainment - a form of "reality TV".
I wonder if in YouTube school they teach you - if you want to get a group of people talking about your channel, reposting your videos etc... just tell them they suck , that will get you the clicks and views !
All the people butt hurt over so and so said my car sucks should just get over it - like, do you really care ? And, if you really want to stick it to those mean youtubers here's a hint - stop linking and clicking on their stuff
It’s funny I think these you tubers intentionally post crap just to **** people off and create content and activities to keep them viable the fact that they say don’t buy a 996 only means they will explode again in pricing so crappy 996 should get serviced to pump up their sale price and the 986 will follow because they share too many items
Mike
You Tube is just like the rest of the internet. Useful, but you need to wade through the crap to get what you are looking for. Hoovie and Car Wizard are entertainment with some bits of wisdom here and there. I don't take it too seriously.
He did apologize and warn that his opinions were going to offend the die hard fans. He also made several statements that it's based on his experience as a repair tech. The man is entitled to his opinion and it doesn't really change mine very much.
I don't know any of these people's names, the only name that matters to me is Carrera, and it's in the garage after a fantastic drive this morning.
If others miss out on this kind of driving experience because of a Youtuber..., sucks to be them!
I was waiting for this video to pop up here and I knew what the reaction would be, you can't say anything negative or the hive mind gets upset but when someone talks up the 996 they get showered with praise. I do agree that you have to take these guys with a grain of salt, they do have to provide entertainment and aren't claiming to be a teaching channel. Also not the first time I've heard someone recommend a boxster off 996 911 but that doesn't seem to matter these days. I don't really look at the Wizard as a Porsche expert but enjoy the tours of some of the cars he has in his shop. Its just entertainment at the end of the day when I am laying in bed. It seems like he does well for himself, can call him a hack all you want but clearly he has built up a decent business or has surrounded himself with people who know what they are doing. That being said, sometimes there is only one way to learn and that is by wrenching.
Wow so much YouTuber hate. Look David (a.k.a. The Car Wizard) was very clear at the beginning, middle and end of this video. He said it's based on his experience working on them. I don't agree with his assessment on the 996/986 but he's not wrong about the similarities and the triggered reaction from the Porsche enthusiasts. I don't have any skin in the 914 world but I do recall hearing how crappy these cars were growing up. That one and the 924/944. The base Macan is nothing more than a re-skinned Q3 with the 2.0 FSI and sluggish transmission. We all should remember how much hate the first gen Panameras got. Now? I'll probably buy one and fix it up on my channel.
Jake is right about one thing, if you don't post controversial stuff you won't get the clicks. It's the nature of the game. I get more clicks when I use the word "eBay" in my titles next to Porsche. People want to see what an eBay supercar looks like.
As far as being a "YouTuber", I'm 50 years old and want to share my love and passion for the brand, hobby and industry. I like to spruce things up with doing skits in front of the videos to mix things up (ala Alton Brown from Good Eats). I know I'm not going to get the mega 100K+ views (yet anyway) but I also know I'm adding to the permanent record on how to maintain, repair and improve on combustion engines. That's all that matters. I know my videos will still be floating around the internet In a hundred years . The fame and fortune may never come but that wasn't the point really. I mean sure, I'd love to have sponsors/investors help fund my builds but as of right now I'm paying for everything myself. I just keep churning out content that I hope people like.
Oh man. My very first car was a 914 in 1986, and I was 16. I enjoyed that car, but yes it had its problems. Now a 996 owner for the past 3yrs, and a lot has changed. If Im honest, my desire when looking to get back into Porsches five years ago, I wanted an air cooled 911. But the budget my wife gave me only allowed for either a 944 or 996. Always wanting a 911, the latter is what I have.
I'm thankful for my car and have learned to work on it along the way. Theres almost no way we could do this on newer 911s. Especially thankful to this forum and fellow Rennlisters (TexSquirrel) helping me along the way.
As for the video, its opinions, and its easy to get argumentative. Ive watched Hoovies and Wizard in the past. Theyre straight up guys. If I lived in Kansas Id take my car to him. If theres anything Ive learned in 50yrs is to trust people who are honest, dependable and who have a strong work ethic. Everything else is negotiable.
Well said.
Im glad I started my Porsche journey with a 996. Its allowed me to appreciate the brand but also the engine. I think the 997 might be my max level when it comes to wrenching on a 911. Ive tried finding Youtubers wrenching on 991 or even 992s and theyre far and in between.
I can see my channel doing a a series on a 997 and hopefully a 993 someday. Then Ill move on to an R8 (bucket list) and then an AMG.
Everyone is so busy being "followers" and "researching" that they stopped leading, and learning first hand.
I don't watch any of the crap, and I don't "follow" anyone.
Lol there's literally nothing worth watching, it's just random videos of old BMW check engine lights and motorcycles being revived.
I just looked actually I have 18 subs.
I don't even know how I got any subs.
