While the gauge is "nice to have", I use the dipstick before the first start of the day.

Both of these times, I have filled up on the way home from work, the engine was running for maybe 5 minutes (not up to temp) and it was about 45-50 degrees ambient out.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The last couple of times that I've gone to get gas at this one gas station I've noticed that my oil level after filling up is indicated just around the minimum mark. Both of these times, I have filled up on the way home from work, the engine was running for maybe 5 minutes (not up to temp) and it was about 45-50 degrees ambient out. The oil level was measured after about 5 minutes of sitting there during the refuelling process. When I shut off the car after driving into work (20 minutes; car gets up to temp; some highway driving) and wait for the countdown timer, the oil level gauge indicates about 1/2 quart low of full. Which reading should I believe? I'll probably add 1/2 quart anyway (just to be safe) but I'm curious that the level can vary so much with basically just the temperature of the oil.

POST 2Original post

I check the oil before first start of the day, with the dash gauge. After fully warmed, and at operating temp, the dash gauge will read 3 bars down, which is equivalent to 3/4 qt.

POST 3Original post

When the engine has been fully warmed up and then shut down for the time required to check it. When you park it the night before and then get out in the morning to start it (as long as it is a level surface) you will get an accurate reading. That will give you the most accurate reading since the warm oil has had all night to settle.

POST 4Original post

LVDell is correct, regardless of what Porsche says. The best time to check the oil is after the car has been sitting a long time (overnight). I am so glad that I am illertrate so I don't have to follow the sometimes stupid recommendations in the manual. I would rather rely on common sense and experience.

POST 5Original post

While the gauge is "nice to have", I use the dipstick before the first start of the day. It takes seconds and you can check other fluid levels while you're in the engine compartment.

POST 6Original post

Just re-filled. FWIW, 1 bar in the display is equivalent to 250 mls just to restate and reconfirm.
