Suggestion

You either disconnect the wire to the alarm contact and cover the end of the wire with tape, or you put a piece of tape on the side of your new radio to mimic the insulator on the oem radio.

Suggestion

However my interior driver's side door handle broke the other day; I heard a "pow" and the handle started to hang loosely such that it activated the "crack the window" feature, and the remote would no longer lock the car, I had to use the key and turn it twice to get the doors to lock.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just changed out my headunit in my 02 c2, and my car now honks the horn once when I lock it. I found a bunch of threads indicating that this means there is an open circuit in the alarm system. I checked the center console, trunk, made sure all the doors and gloveboxes were shut and it still beeps. Is there something related to the stereo headunit switchout that could be the cause of this? Any other ideas for things to check?

POST 2Original post

Brown wire with a Blue stripe (on the original radio connector). As I recall you need to either cut it or ground it (any solid brown wire is ground).

POST 3Original post

Your original radio had a plastic insulator on the side for the alarm contact. That way the alarm contact could not touch the metal body of the radio. Your replacement radio does not have this insulator, so you get the beep when you set the alarm. You either disconnect the wire to the alarm contact and cover the end of the wire with tape, or you put a piece of tape on the side of your new radio to mimic the insulator on the oem radio.

POST 4Original post

Also....if you normally lock the car twice with the remote...the fast horn beep will sound. This means that the motion alarm for the inside of the car is deactivated. Not sure if that will help, but if the car actually locks.....and you lock again, motion is turned off. J

Thanks guys...you have been very helpful.

POST 6Original post

I have the same issue. I'm a little confused. Is the alarm actually activated

POST 7Original post

The alarm system is on, but not for the radio. This is why some people with aftermarket radios leave things as they are.

POST 8Original post

Hi all, I'm reviving this thread because I'm having a "similar but different" issue...my '99 996 has never beeped when I locked it, even with an aftermarket stereo in. However my interior driver's side door handle broke the other day; I heard a "pow" and the handle started to hang loosely such that it activated the "crack the window" feature, and the remote would no longer lock the car, I had to use the key and turn it twice to get the doors to lock. I had the return tension spring fixed so now all that works fine again, but now I'm getting the single beep when I lock the doors with the remote. What could have been messed with behind the door panel that would cause this open circuit to be indicated? Thanks, Denny
