Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm going to change out the ignition switch today and I'm too old and immobile to try to shinney between the seat and the dashboard, so.....I'm wanting to remove the driver's seat so I have room to lay and work.
Seat bolts are E12, but a 10mm socket took care of that part. Battery is dis-connected, and key is out of the ignition. Time to get the seat out (yes, the top is down).
Question is....how to dis-connect the wiring harness? Do I try to disconnnect at the seat, or at the M535 box that's attached to the floor? Not an easy way to look, so can somebody help me make the decision?
535 box is immobilizer, would not disconnect anything there, in fact, that shouldn't go to the seat at all. Tilt the seat back, twist the connector bracket holder until it frees from the bottom of the seat, and then disconnect the plugs at the seat.
Yes, I freed it from the bottom of the seat, and there's a shield on one end of the connector that has a swivel pin, but what's the secret to lifting it? I'm not inclined to use too much force yet.
YouTube it. Search for Porsche 996 or 986 seat removal.
There are a few little "gotcha's" with separating the harness. Watching someone else the first time you do it makes it a lot easier.
Unless the tab is light blue, there's no tab, and pushing the blue tab doesn't free anything up. Feels like there's a hook lever somewhere, but nothing gives. I removed the rotating lever from the assembly and can't see anything intuitive. Watching/reading a few more instructions and one caught my eye; it said that removing part of the harness could cause memory to fail, so I've turned the seat sideways and will try to get under the dash with the seat still in the footwell.
I recall the seat harness just having a tab you pull out and it pushes the connectors apart. Put back together by pushing together, pushing the tab in which pulls together more.
My 986 (sold) had one connection. The 4S has 4 that had to be removed. Take pictures. If I did, anyone can.
Well, age has it's drawbacks, and one of them includes not being able to maneuver under the dash enough to get to the ignition switch. For what appears to be a pretty easy R&R, getting access was my Waterloo, so it goes to the shop. Rats, and thanks to you guys for your help.
Step 1: buy a 2 or 3” standard screwdriver bit: like a jewelers screwdriver. Grind it down so it will fit the slot on the ignition. About half.
Step 2: put the seat all the way back. Disconnect battery.
Step 3: remove vent tube. Easiest to squeeze accordion section. Suggest take a pic so you know how it gets back.
step 4: place a flashlight, preferably one of those that are long, under the brake so u can see.
step 5: get your head under the dash with your hand up there.
Step 6: remove harness from switch.
step 7: loosen set screws, knowing they have loctite on them. 2 or 3” bit is perfect. Do not remove set screws. Loosen them until switch comes out.
install is reverse. I used the Audi part # 4A0 905 849 B
first time took me 45 minutes. I can do this now in 15 minutes. I am old (50’s).
