Simply ran a jumper wire from the wire that has power to it to the one that does not (the wire is there but there is no power).

Suspected cause

Don't know why rear fog lamps are only one sided and seem to be only the driver's side but I suspect the reason is, so other drivers won't think its the brake lights.

The only difference is that on a Boxster you can run the wire behind the carpet in the trunk to go from one tail light to the other.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My offside rear fog lamp refuses to light up. I checked the bulb and its fine. Tried to trace the wiring but not having much fun. Would anyone have a wiring diagram of the fog lights circuit they could share with me? Cheers

POST 2Original post

I don't think it's supposed to... I think the rear fog lights light only on one side.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's interesting. It seems to be wired up though. I wonder if it can be wired easily. Loren?

POST 4Original post

I believe it may be pre-wired for Row use. I know there is a DIY for the 993 which should give you some idea of what's involved. http://p-car.com/diy/rfl/ If this link doesn't work go to www.p-car.com and follow the links. DIY compliments of Gert at www.carnewal.com I'm sure when Loren comes back from his "break", he'll have the answer!

POST 5Original post

Scouser, Out of curiosity, is your rear fog lamp on the driver side? All US models only have the driver's side fog light (left side looking from rear). Apparently that has been conjecture over the purpose, but essentially its to signify which side to pass on. The point being, if you had both sides and the driver's side burnt out, you'd get clipped when someone tried to pass in heavy fog.

POST 6Original post

I got both to work on my Boxster. Simply ran a jumper wire from the wire that has power to it to the one that does not (the wire is there but there is no power). Fog I met a local 996 owner last month and he did the same thing. The only difference is that on a Boxster you can run the wire behind the carpet in the trunk to go from one tail light to the other. On a 996 you run it through the engine compartment. Jeff

POST 7Original post

What's the reason behind wiring it up? If you don't like the way it looks, then don't turn on the rear fog lights.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Reasons....How about these..... Two lights are safer than one. In dense fog, one lamp can look like the rear of a bycicle until you get too close to it then....bump! Two lights look better than one. This car is all about looks...that's why I polish and groom it and buy it presents. So I want two eyes in the back and not one when its foggy. But also, I am surprised. I expect a car of this calibre and expense to have two Fog lights not one as found on less expensive cars. I can't believe the marketing mob in The Fatherland decided that it would be a good cost cutting venture to leave one out....especially after wiring it! Titbits....we get bad fog in the North of England and fog light(s) can safe your life.....at least the car's life (according to my wife, based on the ammount of mulla I have spent on this car, it's arguable which is more important.. me or the car :-) It is also a legal requirement in the UK for vehicles to have at least one fog lamp. I say at least with tongue in cheek. This car is by no means an "at least" type car!

POST 9Original post

Ahhh..two fog lights on, left and right, can be mistaken for brake lights. Not really a problem with regards being seen in fog, but what about the person behind thinking you're always on the brakes? Personally I discarded the fog light issue in favor of having more noticeable differentiation between parking/street and brake lights. I wired both fog lamp bulbs to the brake circuit so the normally "dark" fog lamp lens lights up when braking, much more noticable that just the high mounted brake lamp alone. If you really want fog "be seen" lamps you can get a continuosuly flashing strobe at Target for about $10 which will fit inside the fog fixture and can be wired into the fog circuit via a voltage dropping resistor. A number of years ago on a dark and foggy night I followed a then new ML320 (MB cross country demo drive just before introduction) over Stevens Pass that I thought had one brake light stuck "on".

It does have a purpose to it. And I believe Audi and MB only use one rear fog light as well, but I could be wrong about that. And what are you doing rear-ending motorcycles in the first place

POST 11Original post

Tell me if I'm crazy or missing something... If the reason to have only one fog light active is to indicate which side to pass on, it seems to me that the conditions would be so horrendous for it not to be clear at that close of a distance which side to pass, it begs the question...should you even BE passing in those conditions...or even driving?!?! In other words if you need the light the entire time to direct you I assume you can never see the car (at least not at a safe distance), and at that point how could you even be driving in such poor conditions?

POST 12Original post

All the cars I've owned had only 1 rear fog lamp (driver's side). I think the only car I've seen with a right and left rear fog lamps is the Jaguar XJ something. It looked like the driver was riding his brakes the whole time. Didn't even noticed the brake lights come on when it did. I guess the guy who was following the Jag didn't either.... screech and WHAM! I think the rear fog lamps are extremely helpful in foggy conditions as well as during sunset hours when the sun is in your face. I've noticed drivers behind me tend to keep a good distance when I do activate the light. Don't know why rear fog lamps are only one sided and seem to be only the driver's side but I suspect the reason is, so other drivers won't think its the brake lights. Like the Jag I saw get rear ended.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just got home from my weekly 230 mile hike to work..... I think the problem here is due to possible differences in US and Euro car configs re Fog lights. The rear fog lights on Euro cars are way much brighter than normal side lights. There is no confusion. And to have your fog lamps on you gotta have your side lights on too. The result is one side is way brighter than the other. I think it looks odd. In fact so odd that I was shocked to find out there is only one on my car. I serously thought I had a fault. And if I didn't know it, if I saw another Pcar with only one Fog lamp I would probably let him know his other lamp is out! I still stand by what I said , the Pcar looks awfully odd with only one Fog lamp. My previous Audi A6 2.5 quattro had two Fog lamps and my wifes Fiat 147 cloverleaf has two fog lamps. I just popped across the street and asked my neighbour. His M5 has two fog lamps. Then again my daughters Renault Clio has one lamp and my other daughters Corsa has only one lamp. Anyway, no matter, I would like to wire them both up on my Porker. Anyone have a wiring diagram?
