Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. My concern is the IMSB has not been replaced & the ill-informed owner has not changed the oil in 8 years.
Leading evidence: 'Replace & the ill-informed owner has not' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check cylinder bore scoring might be next based' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The tires are about 6 years old - not bad with plenty of tread - but they'll eventually get replaced along with the brake pads.

Checking for cylinder bore scoring might be next based on the Blackstone results.

Suggestion
While the engine is out I would think about changing the coolant tank, spark plugs, and coils.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im brand new to the 996. Although Ive been wrenching on and driving 928s for 10 years. Just shook on a deal to buy a 2000 996 Tip / Cab with very low miles from the son of the original owner. Pretty much a one owner car and in EXCELLENT condition. Drives, accelerates, handles & stops like a new car.
My concern is the IMSB has not been replaced & the ill-informed owner has not changed the oil in 8 years. It has 7K miles on the Mobil 1 full synthetic so Im HOPEFUL he didnt screw up the low miles ENGINE much less the IMSB thinking synthetic oil doesnt have a shelf life. Ugh!!!!
Of course, Im sending the oil off to Blackstone for analysis prior to sealing the deal. Already reached out to the only LN IMSB certified tech in Ohio. Approximately $3500 on the Tiptronic automatic cars. Otherwise the car is immaculate. All in, including the LN IMSB, RMS, WP, and other updates, Im looking at $30K.
Anything else I should look for while under the car on a lift? Under the bonnet? Interior? Hidden problems? Etc? Im a decent wrench, just dont know the car as well as Id like and there arent any good 996 knowledgeable mechs in that area for a proper PPI. Thanks in advance!!
I would replace the drive belt, and coolant cap (updated part, ending in "04"). If these are the original tires don't drive on them even if they look good. You're going to want to flush the brake fluid. It's good that you're changing the water pump. While the engine is out I would think about changing the coolant tank, spark plugs, and coils. Those may not be necessary but couldn't hurt (except in the wallet)
Thanks! All the routine maintenance will be done by myself and the 928 Buckeye Landsharks. We'll change all fluids... tranny fluid, coolant, brake fluid, windshield wiper and since the motor oil is SOOOO old it will be drained, filled, ran, then drained again and refilled with the proper weight / spec oil... with another sample sent off to Blackstone so I'll have a baseline for future oil change results. The tires are about 6 years old - not bad with plenty of tread - but they'll eventually get replaced along with the brake pads.
What I really need to know are problem areas to look for on this specific model & year?
So - I just bought a 2000 996 c2 Tip and learned that MOST of these came with a dual row IMS and these have a very low failure rate (<1%). LN has a pre-qual checklist for an IMS replacement and you may want to have that done. The oil analysis will likely hold a few answers for you. Checking for cylinder bore scoring might be next based on the Blackstone results. I'm also told that the AOS and water pump are high on the problem list. I see many dropping the sump pan when they do the oil change to look for debris. My car has 52K and so far has presented no problems. Enjoy the car.
PS - I m not a "wrench".
I would install the Ultimate AOS while the engine is out. It was invented by one of the forum members and addresses significant issues with the original design.
It sounds like you're dropping it off with Jeff at Kraftwerks right? If so, I highly recommend as he replaced mine and did some other various work back in 2017. Excellent guy to work with, keeps you in the loop on progress, and his shop is very orderly which speaks volumes of a person without the need for words IMO.
Have you talked to him about doing a PPI? Wasn't something I had requested, but would be surprised if this isn't something he could do, especially since there's scheduled work being performed as is.
Yep, Jeff is Da Man!! The car isn't IN Ohio so he's not doing the PPI, and there's no one local to the car, so I will have to suffice. I know my way around the underside of a Porsche, granted mostly 928s, but the BIG stuff is pretty obvious / evident. It's the hidden stuff I'm unfamiliar with for this model / year. The oil analysis will tell me VOLUMES including if the heads are cracked (excessive coolant or fuel present), bore scoring & IMS degradation (excessive metals by type) with a whole-nother level of science-y stuff
It can really set your mind at ease when buying a used car, especially a sports car as complicated as some Porsches can be...
I know about the AOS (Air Oil Separator), but didn't know about the aftermarket replacement. Where, exactly, can I find the Ultimate AOS information? And, where can I find the LN pre-qualification list? I'm sure Jeff has heard of both, but I'll start researching... regardless. It's my job to learn as much as I can - hence, I'm hanging out in unfamiliar territory asking NOOB questions...
Thanks again!!
UAOS was invented by
@Porschetech3
and should be an easy google search. Charles at LN should be able to provide a list of certified IMSB Solution installers.
I have the same model year, not a cab though. Only thing I can think of specific to this model year is that Jake Raby says these are prone to head cracks, and therefore intermix. Not sure what you can do to prevent it, other than get the coolant system working correctly but pre-purchase inspect for evidence of coolant and oil not being where they are supposed to be. I doubt it has happened in the past with such a hands-off owner, but check and see if you think the heads have been off.
See if there is any dark foam blowing out of the A/C vents. Very common issue with these models. If there is, it will affect the air distribution, very little heat and sometimes affects the temp of the A/C. If you find it, search for videos that show how to repair. Fairly simple to fix. Some have pulled the entire dash out to fix, but now not necessary.
Good luck!
Yep, saw a little foam when we turned on the A/C blower. 928s have the same issue - old foam deterioration. Glad theres an easy fix on the 996.
Thanks!!
Leaking hydraulic pistons where? Or part of what system? Im unfamiliar with all the cars systems so would you be a little more specific? Thanks for the help!
