Can I use a Jar opener instead of a oil filter socket to remove my oil filter housing?

Suggestion
It's deep enough that you don't have to worry about splash if the oil is coming out fast, and you don't have some big drain/funnel surface that you have to clean every time you use it.

Yes, I do so much oil changing on our vehicles, at least 3 of them stay full of used oil at all times.

I keep several of these chlorine tab 5 gallon buckets on hand to store used oil in until I can get it to the City recycle tank.

I use the Rhino model to drain the oil and then transfer it into a standard 5 gallon gas can.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

In the last 20 years of changing oil, I've never had issues primarily because I just empty my oil into any generic milk or OJ containers I may have laying around.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I also agree that oil containers make no difference at all until the day you end up with multiple quarts all over your garage floor...
Went to several local auto parts stores and they all stock the same plastic oil drain cans to catch the oil
The plugs and overall quality
Makes me worry about transporting to oil recycling facility
Any suggestions on a high quality one ( maybe metal) ?
You can "transport" your used oil in a bucket to any shop that collects it. I "transport" my used oil in the bottle from the new oil I put in the engine.
What is the "worry" part?
I have used gallon milk jugs, orange juice containers, antifreeze jugs or what ever I had laying around. I put the containers in a cardboard box and take the oil to where I bought it from for recycling. Gotta tell yuh I never got worried...that's how I roll....
I use two of these, 3gal each. Good for many oil changes. I take them to auto parts store for oil recycling once both are filled. Super convenient.
The cap is not super secure but as long as you keep the container upright, it should be fine.

What I was trying to describ is a oil catch pan/ container combo
Of which I've found several all of which were poor quality plastic
I just thought, how cool drain into then transport
With same item
Perfect oil drain pan?
Rubbermaid roughneck 10 gallon container. Lid seals tight, you can either transport the oil in the roughneck or pour it into other containers. It's deep enough that you don't have to worry about splash if the oil is coming out fast, and you don't have some big drain/funnel surface that you have to clean every time you use it.
About $10-$12 bucks at Wal-mart or the like.
I use one very much this Rhino model:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/RhinoGear-...n-Pan/20440558
It is all plastic but heavy and so far hasn't leaked a drop.
Couple of things:
Be sure the drain basin stopper plug is removed.
Do not let the oil drain plug fall into the drain basin or it will stop the drain hole and the pan basin will overflow.
Be sure the vent cap is off and the drain spout cap is on securely.
After you have finished while the thing has a carry handle I never carried it like a suitcase but carried it flat and put it in the rear trunk of my Boxster and drove to the auto parts store and dumped the oil promptly.
I use the same as Macster's from Wally World. I have an Amish Farm nearby which asks for old drain oil. No idea why? I will ask why next time I drop some off at the farm. o that's where mine goes, straight into a large marked barrel on the farm. No complaints as yet.
Can't believe people are over analyzing a simple container. Does anyone know what are the best gloves to wear while changing the oil? Also, what was the torque value of the oil nut again? Can I use a Jar opener instead of a oil filter socket to remove my oil filter housing?
Heh. It's over-analysis until you open the hatch of your six-month-old X5 and find that the threads split on your previous crappy container. At this point, staring thoughtfully at a bunch of stupid plastic jugs will seem like a worthwhile activity.
Well, actually....
I really like the Harbor Freight Extra Heavy Duty Nitrile Gloves! :-)

In the last 20 years of changing oil, I've never had issues primarily because I just empty my oil into any generic milk or OJ containers I may have laying around. I simply drop off the containers at a local auto parts store. Simple and done.
I might have to try the HF black versions. I tried the older blue versions and they were crap.
If you bring oil to an auto parts store in The People's Democratic Republic of California, they make you dump the oil and take the containers to avoid being fined for having "hazardous waste" in the garbage.
I use the Rhino model to drain the oil and then transfer it into a standard 5 gallon gas can. Very tough, cheap container that transports without spilling.
Any SUV should have a trunk liner

One question I am having a hard time to understand:
Schnell explained how the hippies have to bring back their dirty containers home (because you know, they become less dirty then), but for the rest of us, how is it that no one seems to be putting back the old oil in the new oil container that you just emptied into the car?
Man oil threads just rule! I keep several of these chlorine tab 5 gallon buckets on hand to store used oil in until I can get it to the City recycle tank. Yes, I do so much oil changing on our vehicles, at least 3 of them stay full of used oil at all times.
I started this thread looking for a high quality drain pan /
Carry container made of metal or of high quality
I know there are a million things oil can be carried in
Krazy, I think you should get some quart bottles labeled and start selling your used oil. JG DT40 with only 2-3 hours of operating time ought to be worth at least $5 a quart.
You should know by now...only use a Porsche approved oil drain pan! I do not understand the complication of this question. I use a plastic drain pan I got at Wal Mart about ten years ago for next to nothing. Drain oil, take it to recycle center, empty drain pan, drive away. The drain pan has a plastic end cap and has never leaked a drop. I've used it for oil, brake fluid, coolant and as a parts cleaner basin. Really, let's not over complicate things!
At the risk of breaking my streak of mostly useless answers on RL, here's a container similar to the one I use:

The one I purchased at Autozone is solid. Thick walls, and the seams don't weep oil as has been the case with the oil pans with screw-on tops I've tried in the past.
It's actually funny that you wrote that as I'd like to caution members to not get the oil filter adapter from Autozone. It is shallow so it doesn't grip the oil filter housing as much as some others. This can actually present an issue if your oil filter housing was tight to a degree.
^^^ That seems pretty solid and one I would use if I lived in Cali. Hell I might just buy one at that price for my extra blinker fluids.
At the risk of another scolding from Zanzibar for not answering his

original question, the Hazet 2169 works great! Have had it in my toolbox for years, previously purchased for working on BMW Moto's. [Note: Hazet 2169, not Hazet 2169-1, 2169-27, or 2169-any_other_suffix]
Nicer than the OEM filter wrench IMHO.
I've had a sealed oil drain pan spout cap "pop" off in my trunk on the way to the recycler and lube my trunk... never again. I simply use the leftover laundry detergent bottles my wife gives me (grab the spout insert with pliers and it pops right out to give you wide opening)... secure screw on caps and strong container made for dense fluids. Each holds about 5+ quarts enough for a standard oil change (Porsche needs 2). Why buy a dedicated container when we all do laundry and these are available for extended life? I think I have been using the same set of 6 for like 10 years now...
