The biggest problem on the street was rear vision (I ran with a huge low wing).

Suggestion
I literally couldn't use 30% of its performance on the street, almost never used 4th or 5th gears, and for a period could only fill the tanks -70 gallons- at the airport.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I ask, because this poor guy turned himself into a rolling crash test platform at about 150MPH. The results were far from good. (I Think This Is the world first completly totaled enzo)
There was an accident in Hong Kong back in either 1999 or 2000 where a 996 splited into two halves after hitting a light pole at the mid section resulting from a high speed spin. The photos posted on the Internet looked very similiar to the one shown here.
There were 4 people in the car. The driver and passenger in the front die at the scene and the rear passengers survived with injuries.
No matter how good or solid a car is built. Physics always win.
The guy was supposedly 41. I think we should all have some respect for the decesed driver. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends. You know you are into cars as a Ferrari owner, an Enzo none the less.
I am not convinced about F car's safety. I've seen many on fire. CF also are very stiff but shatter upon strong impact. Without a roll cage in alum or harden steel, a CF monocoque alone just isn't enough.
As for 911, I think Porsche is much better in safety engineering. Ben's CGT was CF and the structure held well. Unfrotunately, the forces was still too much. I wonder how a 911 cab compares to a SL500 or SC430 in safety.
I am sorry for the guy...but look at the road......sometimes it is hard to control yourself with all that power...but you have to control yourself.. I am glad he didn't hit anybody else.
150 mph? What does anyone expect. 150 mph on the streets? What can that driver expect. So many things can happen on the track even when everyone is going in the same direction...how can anyone hope to get from point A to B on the streets at that speed and live to tell the story, Porsche or Chevy?
I certainly feel sorry for all, of course, but the driver was insane to drive that fast, on the streets, with 3 others in the car...what was he thinking? I guess we'll never know!
Won't be long til a CGT is similiarly depicted. 600 hp supercars on relatively skinny tires, with very small wings on bumpy (compared to a modern track) pavement are very tricky to drive. If the driver feels the need to experience all the power, bad stuff is going to happen. Look at the forest of utility poles in the background. Very few race tracks feature that "bust the car in half" ammenity.
As I've posted before, I used to drive a road-licensed Lola Can Am car on the street. Even with 600plus hp and a total weight of 2000 lbs wet, it was tame compared to an Enzo (and it was not tame by other any comparator). Eighteen inch wide slicks, and 800 pounds of downforce make a huge difference. People think "If you can drive, you can drive a CGT or Enzo". Maybe, if you drive the car at 4/10's of its limits. These cars cross the line so quickly, without years of experience the typical driver can't feel it. Hopefully, guys with enough dough to buy these things will be smart about that too. AS
I didn't it to work (no roof, no locks, and a lure to vandals), but mostly waited for my wife to say "Honey, we need milk" to fire it up for a round trip to anywhere. I live in an area with pretty open roads and some fairly scenic drives. It was a pain at stoplights due to overheating concerns (had 2 small fans which couldn't quite keep up). Otherwise great on the road, except for the tires following every irregularity. First gear went to 70, the 20-30 mph increments for the rest. It easily spun the tires in first (with axle hop) and in second on poor pavement.
The point was that most people consider that boarderline insane, but an Enzo or CGT are probably trickier, since you aren't constantly reminded that the car is a monster ready to bite. Things like a near-open exhaust and straight cut gears make you constantly aware. I literally couldn't use 30% of its performance on the street, almost never used 4th or 5th gears, and for a period could only fill the tanks -70 gallons- at the airport.
Anybody who tries to use an Enzo aggressively on the street should have an FIA license and fully paid-up life, disability, and liability insurance. You would only need to floor it once to know the episode pictured in the opening post represented lunacy. Don't want to sound cold, but that was predictable. AS
Alex, ur my personal jesus.
i can't believe u actually took a can am car on the street....i can't believe u raced a canam car periode! WOW! what was it like, details, which tracks etc? how was the racing,..was there lots of passing?
Re location- doesn't the police car look like an Alfa? Therefore, Italy most likely.
Re Can Am car on street- it was a 1969 Lola T163 updated to 165 specs (identical to Simonize car) driven by Gary Wilson in original series. Featured on back page of Autoweek in the late 1980"s (the magnificent Lola of Munster, Indiana). Ran with the plate "Group 7". Engine was all alum 406 (built by Gaerte-sprint car master) with 4 webers.Made 611 hp on dyno. Mostly ran at Road America with a trip to Atlanta, Blackhawk. For street, I put minimal mufflers on it (in the giant collector pipes) Otherwise no changes. Even the wiper motor stayed in (tho on the inside of the racing screen).
The biggest problem on the street was rear vision (I ran with a huge low wing). Springing was actually soft and the big wing could make it bottom entering the front straight at Atlanta. Clutch wasn't tricky at all, tho I tended to use it on the street but not track. Hewland LG600 was a phenomenal box. The car was geared for a max speed of 188, so it was a rocket. every gear felt like first.
The big small block made handling excellent. Much easier than a big block. With my friend Chris Beebe driving at a big Can Am reunion, the car finished 3rd behind Hulme and Gibson-so it was fast.
Re racing. I didn't have the cash to do Can Am early, so I entered it when Vintage started. As you may have noted, the lap times weren't much different. In my last year of vintage Can Am, the Can Am grid times would have made the field for the CART race that year (tho at the tail). I quit when the pros started to drop down into Vintage. Follmer passed me once going about 30 mph faster than me, and that was it for me. Those guys were comfortable at 200, and I wasn't.
I was a midfield driver, won once, a few high finishes, but never crashed. Only one scary moment when a Formula A car pulled into me while I was passing costing me a front wing and nose component.
When my son was an infant, I used to strap a baby seat into the left hand bucket and take him for rides. Closest thing to it is a roller coaster ride. The pavement comes up really fast on the street, tho not so much on track since you look farther ahead.
I did it because I always wanted to drive one, and nobody lets you drive theirs. I'm not sure anyone will do it again. My current replacement is the 1953 Ward Kurtis that won the La Carrera. It too is street licensed ("1Mexico") and is scarier than the Lola by far. AS
