A few pointers to make sure they check - other than the "obvious" that applies to any car

I know most recommend an indy Porsche repair shop.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi:
I'm in Seattle looking at a 996 for sale in Walnut Creek. Being remote, I'd like to ask for your help in recommending a shop for a PPI.
Pacific Power Motorsports looks promising. Anyone have experience with them? Recommend other shops?
Thank you in advance,
Brad
Don't have experience with either but kahlers in Dublin about 16 miles away was a Pca sponsor if I remember correctly.
I did ppi at "german" auto shop but then took car to porsche only indie - and it was night and day difference. How many 996's do they work on in a month - this would give you a clue how much expertise they have.
A few pointers to make sure they check - other than the "obvious" that applies to any car
- pull oil filter and check for debris - does oil look new , old but in good condition or very old and sludgy
- leaks around water pump, tstat, coolant tank and the hoses.
- brake fluid condition can tell you if maintenance was skipped
- check for oil/coolant intermix signs
- check windows drop when pulling door handle as they should - from both inside and outside handles
- condition of hood and trunk struts - do they hold hood open - cheap to replace but again indicator of how **** previous owner was ...
- what brand of tires are on car - how old (dot date) and condition
( new michelins is a good sign, 8 year old chinese tires would not be !)
Test drive - any sign of 2nd gear pop-out ?
I'm sure there are a few other things the guys here could add
Post ppi reort up here to get opionons
I would absolutely recommend Pacific Power Motorsports. The shop is owned by enthusiasts. It doesn't get any better than that. They also are sponsors for the PCA - Golden Gate Region track series.
Thank you, great summary.
I'm familiar with many of the items listed. Just started to hear about the 2nd gear issue by another members topic recently posted.
I think the suggestion of asking how many 996 cars in a month is a great one to ask. Really hones in on how knowledgeable they are to these cars for a PPI.
I brought my '86 Carrera there for several years until I sold it last year. I'm taking my, new to me, 2003 996 there in a couple weeks for a thorough nose to tail PPI - in this case it's a Post Purchase Inspection.
Update: spoke to the local indy dealer and he has two potential customer appointments on Saturday to look at the red 996 that I'm interested in.
Assuming neither one buys it, the only local porsche shop open on Saturday is Michael Snead.
I know most recommend an indy Porsche repair shop. How bad would it be taking the car to the local Porsche Service for the PPI, assuming I could get in on Saturday?
Risks? Even worth it? Not sure what the cost is yet.
Did a quick search and found this post from a couple of years back. Sounds encouraging.
